Plot twist

Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT VICTOR CALDWELL CAME FOR MY HOUSE

The gates locked automatically.

Security personnel moved into position.

I had never seen the estate react like that.

The house suddenly felt less like a home and more like a fortress.

Victor Caldwell's SUV stopped outside the gates.

He stepped out alone.

He was older than the photographs.

Silver hair.

Black overcoat.

A walking cane.

He looked harmless.

That was probably why he was dangerous.

My security chief approached the gate.

Victor smiled.

“I've come to speak with Mrs. Harlow.”

“You need an appointment.”

“I don't.”

He looked directly toward the house.

“Tell Evangeline that her grandmother's secret belongs to my family.”

I stepped closer to the window.

Nathaniel grabbed my arm.

“Don't.”

“I want to hear him.”

Victor raised his voice.

“Your grandmother stole something from us.”

I opened the front door.

Security immediately protested.

I ignored them.

I walked onto the stone terrace.

“Mr. Caldwell.”

Victor looked at me.

His smile disappeared.

“You have your grandfather's eyes.”

“My grandfather didn't steal anything from you.”

Victor laughed.

“That's what they told you?”

“You're trespassing.”

“Your grandmother destroyed my family.”

“No.”

I held his gaze.

“Your father destroyed your family.”

His face changed.

I had hit something.

Victor gripped his cane.

“You know nothing.”

“I know about the fraud.”

His eyes narrowed.

“I know about the money.”

His expression darkened.

“And I know you have been using Grayson to try to get control of Harlow assets.”

Silence.

Then Victor smiled.

“You think this is about money?”

“Isn't it?”

“No.”

He looked toward the house.

“This is about ownership.”

“I own nothing you can take.”

“You're wrong.”

Victor stepped closer to the gate.

“Your husband has already signed documents.”

My stomach tightened.

“What documents?”

He smiled.

“Ask him.”

Then he returned to his vehicle.

Before leaving, he looked at me one final time.

“You should ask Grayson what happened to your grandmother's original trust agreement.”

The SUVs disappeared down the road.

I turned to Nathaniel.

“What does that mean?”

He looked troubled.

“We need to find the original.”

“Why?”

“Because a copy can be challenged.”

My heart sank.

“And the original?”

“If it's valid, it ends this.”

That night, we searched again.

This time we found nothing.

Then Blair called.

Her voice was frantic.

“My mother knows I talked to you.”

“Where are you?”

“At the hotel.”

“Stay there.”

“She sent someone.”

“What?”

“There’s a man outside.”

I called hotel security.

Then Nathaniel called the police.

For the first time, Blair sounded truly frightened.

“I don't want this anymore.”

“You don't have to.”

“I was stupid.”

“You were manipulated.”

“I still betrayed you.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

“But you can change what you do next.”

She cried.

“I don't know where my baby and I belong.”

I answered honestly.

“Neither do I.”

The next morning, Blair agreed to meet us with the documents she had.

She arrived wearing a long coat, one hand resting protectively over her stomach.

She looked exhausted.

Not glamorous.

Not threatening.

Just frightened.

She handed Nathaniel a folder.

“My mother gave me these months ago.”

“Why?”

“She wanted me to sign them.”

Nathaniel read the first page.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He handed it to me.

It was a declaration stating that Blair intended to move into the Harlow Estate after my departure.

It also contained language suggesting that Grayson had promised her the property.

But beneath the signature line was something even more important.

Grayson had signed as a witness.

Not as owner.

As witness.

Which meant he knew the house wasn't his.

He had lied to Blair.

I looked at her.

“Did he tell you he owned this house?”

“Yes.”

“Did he show you the deed?”

“No.”

“Did you ask?”

She lowered her eyes.

“I believed him.”

I understood.

Believing someone can be dangerous.

Especially when you want their story to be true.

Then Blair reached into her purse.

“There’s something else.”

She handed me a small envelope.

“My mother told me to destroy it.”

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Grayson and Marjorie.

But this one was different.

They were inside the Harlow Estate.

In my grandmother's study.

Marjorie's hand held a document.

Grayson was smiling.

The date was six months earlier.

I stared.

“They've been here.”

Blair nodded.

“My mother told me she had a key.”

I looked toward Nathaniel.

“Who gave it to her?”

He didn't answer.

Because we both knew.

Grayson.

Then the security alarm sounded.

Everyone froze.

A door downstairs had opened.

Someone was inside.

Security rushed toward the hallway.

I heard footsteps.

Fast.

Then a crash.

Nathaniel pulled Blair behind him.

I stood frozen.

A man ran from the library carrying a black case.

Security tackled him near the staircase.

The case hit the floor.

Documents spilled across the marble.

One page landed directly at my feet.

I picked it up.

My heart stopped.

The heading read:

ORIGINAL Harlow Trust Amendment.

I looked at Nathaniel.

He stared at the page.

“That's it.”

The man had tried to steal the original.

And suddenly I understood.

Victor hadn't come for the house.

Marjorie hadn't called me for the house.

Grayson hadn't lied about the house because he wanted a beautiful place for Blair.

They wanted the trust.

And whatever was written in that original amendment was valuable enough for someone to break into my home.

The police arrived.

The man refused to speak.

But before they took him away, he looked directly at me.

Then he smiled.

“You're too late.”

My blood ran cold.

Nathaniel picked up the remaining pages.

One sentence was circled in red.

If the beneficiary is deceived into surrendering possession of protected property, the trustee may transfer controlling rights to the successor beneficiary.

I looked at Blair.

Then Nathaniel.

“Who is the successor beneficiary?”

Nathaniel turned the page.

His face went pale.

“That's the problem.”

“Who?”

May you like

He looked at me.

“Blair's unborn child.”
