THE HOUSEKEEPER’S VOW / Chapter 7 / 8

Chapter 8 - THE HEIRLOOM

The aftermath of the raid was a blur of flashing police lights, statements, and the quiet, efficient cleanup by Cassian’s men.

By midnight, the estate was silent again. The broken glass had been swept away. The cold night air blew through the shattered windows of the study, but the rest of the house felt incredibly still. Safe.

I sat in the large armchair by the fire in the master bedroom, holding a cup of hot tea Mrs. Gable had pressed into my hands.

My cheek throbbed where Evelyn had hit me, but the pain was distant. My mind was still racing, trying to process the sheer volume of the day.

I was married. I was the heir to a fortune. My mother was safe. Margaret was in federal custody.

The bedroom door opened softly.

Cassian walked in. He had showered, washing away the blood and the grime of the fight. He wore a simple pair of dark sweatpants and a white t-shirt. With his hair damp and the harsh lines of his face softened by exhaustion, he didn't look like a feared mafia boss. He looked like a man who had fought a war and just wanted to rest.

He walked over to the armchair and crouched down in front of me, so we were eye level.

“Dr. Aris said your mother’s heart rate has stabilized,” Cassian said quietly. “She’s sleeping peacefully. And Mia is in her bed. Mrs. Gable is sitting with her.”

“Thank you,” I whispered, looking down at my hands. “For everything.”

Cassian reached out and gently tilted my chin up, forcing me to look at him. His eyes traced the bruising on my cheek.

“I should have protected you better,” he murmured, his voice tight with guilt. “I promised you were safe here, and I let her get to you.”

“You didn't let her do anything,” I argued softly. “You saved us. You saved me.”

Cassian shook his head slowly. “I’ve been watching you for six months, Lydia. Watching you take care of your mother, watching you handle Margaret’s cruelty with so much grace. I knew who you were. I knew you were Arthur’s daughter. And I wanted to tell you.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because the moment you knew, you became a target,” Cassian explained. “Russo, Margaret, my own rivals… they would have used you to get to the Aldridge port. I needed an ironclad reason to bring you behind my walls, under my protection, before the truth came out.”

I looked deeply into his dark eyes. The rumors, the fear, the stories about the six wives—it all felt like a lifetime ago.

“So the wedding today,” I said slowly. “You knew Evelyn was going to run.”

Cassian’s lips curved into a faint, self-deprecating smile. “I left the safe with the forty thousand dollars unlocked on purpose. I knew she was desperate. I knew if I gave her an opening, she would take it. I just needed her out of the way so Margaret would be desperate enough to offer you.”

My breath caught. He had orchestrated the entire thing. He had played Margaret perfectly, just to get me out of that cottage.

“You went through all of this… for me?”

Cassian didn't answer immediately. He stood up, walked over to his dresser, and opened the top drawer. He pulled out a small, worn velvet box.

He walked back and sat on the edge of the coffee table in front of me.

He opened the box.

Inside, resting on the velvet, was a stunning, antique diamond ring. It wasn't flashy or ostentatious. It was elegant, timeless, and incredibly beautiful.

“This was my mother’s,” Cassian said softly. “It’s the only thing of hers I have left. I didn't give it to Evelyn. I didn't give it to the women I helped escape. I’ve held onto it for twenty years, waiting for the one woman I actually wanted to keep.”

He took the ring out of the box.

“The vows we took today were a transaction,” Cassian said, his voice deep and thick with emotion. “They were a legal shield. You don't owe me anything, Lydia. Tomorrow, I will sign over the entire Aldridge estate to you. You will have more money than you could ever spend. You can take your mother, take Mia, and go anywhere in the world you want to be.”

He looked down at the ring, then up into my eyes.

“But if you stay… I will spend every day for the rest of my life making sure you never have to be afraid again.”

A tear slipped down my cheek, stinging the cut on my face, but I didn't care.

I looked at this man—the monster the world feared, the savior of six women, the protector of a little girl who wasn't his, and the man who had torn down an empire just to keep me safe.

I didn't want to run. I had spent my whole life running.

I reached out and placed my hand in his.

“I don't want the Aldridge estate,” I whispered, my voice trembling but certain. “I want to stay here.”

Cassian’s eyes darkened with an intense, overwhelming relief. He slid the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.

He leaned forward, cupping my face in his large, warm hands, and kissed me.

It wasn't a desperate, violent kiss. It was incredibly gentle, a promise sealed in the quiet of the night. It felt like coming home.
