Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO THOUGHT NO ONE WOULD FIND OUT

Gregory Sloan disappeared for forty-eight hours.
The police issued a warrant.
Marcus traced his financial accounts.
Daniel filed emergency motions.
And Elliot moved Maddie and Emma to a secure residence outside the city.
Maddie barely spoke.
She stayed beside Emma.
But she had stopped flinching every time a door opened.
That was progress.
Small.
Fragile.
Real.
On the third morning, Marcus called.
“We found Gregory.”
“Where?”
“An airport hangar.”
Elliot stood.
“Is he alone?”
“No.”
“Who is with him?”
Marcus paused.
“Dr. Bell.”
Elliot's stomach tightened.
“Get the police there.”
“They're already moving.”
Within an hour, both men were in custody.
Gregory refused to speak.
Dr. Bell asked for a lawyer.
But the evidence was overwhelming.
Bank transfers.
Phone records.
Hospital alterations.
Vehicle records.
Surveillance footage.
And one final piece.
Rachel's voice.
Helen Carter had kept an old voicemail from Rachel.
It had been recorded two days before the accident.
Rachel sounded frightened.
“If something happens to me, I need someone to know.”
A pause.
“Gregory is stealing from the company.”
Another pause.
“He knows I found out.”
Rachel's voice cracked.
“And Miriam is helping him.”
Elliot listened with tears in his eyes.
Then Rachel said something that made him close his eyes.
“Elliot doesn't know any of this.”
Her voice softened.
“I wanted to protect him.”
The recording ended.
In court, the prosecution presented the evidence.
Miriam testified.
Gregory's attorney attempted to challenge her credibility.
But then the financial records appeared.
Forty-eight million dollars.
The trust.
Emma's identity.
The false death certificate.
The hospital records.
Everything connected.
Dr. Bell admitted he had falsified the neonatal record.
He claimed he had been threatened.
Gregory admitted paying him.
Gregory denied ordering Rachel's death.
Then the traffic footage was played.
The black SUV followed Rachel.
A second camera showed Gregory leaving the hospital that same night.
The jury saw the timeline.
The evidence.
The lies.
The cover-up.
Maddie sat beside Elliot.
She held his hand.
At one point, she whispered:
“Is Mom going to come back?”
Elliot's heart broke.
“No.”
Maddie nodded.
“But they can't erase her anymore.”
“No.”
The trial lasted weeks.
Eventually, the verdict came.
Gregory was convicted on multiple counts related to fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and crimes connected to Rachel's death.
Dr. Bell was convicted for falsifying medical records and participating in the cover-up.
Miriam pleaded guilty to financial crimes and conspiracy and accepted responsibility for her role in concealing the truth.
Tracy was also charged after evidence showed she had knowingly assisted the false child-welfare reports and accepted payments.
But the legal victory was only part of the story.
After the verdict, Elliot took Maddie and Emma to Rachel's grave.
For the first time, Maddie saw it.
She stood quietly.
Then placed a small flower beside the stone.
“This is where Mom is?”
“Yes.”
Maddie looked at the name.
RACHEL BROOKS.
She touched the letters.
“She didn't forget us.”
“No.”
“Then why did she leave?”
Elliot knelt beside her.
“She didn't choose to leave.”
Maddie leaned against him.
“I know.”
Emma slept in his arms.
Elliot looked down at his daughter.
Then at Rachel's name.
For four years, he had thought grief meant holding onto the past.
Now he understood something different.
Grief could also mean carrying someone forward.
He whispered:
“I found her.”
The wind moved through the trees.
Maddie looked at him.
“Found who?”
“Our daughter.”
Maddie smiled.
“She's ours.”
Elliot looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Our family?”
“Yes.”
Maddie thought for a moment.
“Then I'm your daughter too?”
Elliot's throat tightened.
“If you want to be.”
May you like
Maddie wrapped her arms around him.
“I do.”
