Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO WAS FRAMED

By morning, the entire city seemed to know.
News reports described an alleged financial conspiracy inside Vance Commercial.
Anonymous documents had been leaked.
Bank records.
Internal emails.
Authorization forms.
Wire transfers.
Every file pointed toward Dorian.
The story was devastating.
According to the leaked documents, Dorian had authorized the movement of eighteen million dollars through shell companies.
He had allegedly approved falsified construction records.
He had allegedly ordered employees to suppress safety complaints.
And one document appeared to show that he had personally authorized a payment connected to Daniel Caldwell's death.
Marin stared at the screen.
“This is impossible.”
Dorian stood behind her.
“Yes.”
“Your signature.”
“Forged.”
“Your authorization.”
“Forged.”
“Your account.”
“Compromised.”
She turned.
“What are you going to do?”
“Tell the truth.”
“That isn't enough.”
“I know.”
Dorian called Elena.
“Freeze every account connected to me.”
Elena stared.
“You'll cripple the company.”
“I'd rather lose the company than let anyone think I moved money after discovering the fraud.”
Marin looked at him.
“That could destroy you.”
Dorian nodded.
“I know.”
He turned toward Gabriel.
“Release every record.”
Gabriel hesitated.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
“Even the family archive?”
“Yes.”
“Even the files about your father?”
“Yes.”
“Your sister?”
“Yes.”
Dorian looked at Sofia.
She nodded.
The archive went public.
Not through tabloids.
Through attorneys.
Investigators.
Courts.
Regulators.
Every document was independently verified.
The public narrative began to change.
Not immediately.
But enough.
Then came the breakthrough.
A forensic analyst discovered that Dorian's signature had been copied from an old document.
The same source file had been used to forge multiple authorizations.
The analyst traced the digital metadata.
A remote server.
Registered to a company called Northbridge Advisory.
Marin knew the name.
“Who owns it?”
Elena looked at the screen.
“Martin Hale.”
Dorian froze.
“But Martin Hale is Marcus.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
“Martin Hale was an alias.”
“Whose?”
The answer appeared.
Nathan Cross.
Dorian stared.
The former chief financial officer.
The man they thought was in Oregon.
The man who had supposedly helped Sofia disappear.
Marin felt sick.
“He betrayed you.”
Sofia looked devastated.
“He saved me.”
“Maybe both are true.”
They found Nathan that afternoon.
He did not run.
He was sitting in a small motel room overlooking the highway.
When Dorian entered, Nathan looked older than his age.
“I knew you'd come.”
Dorian closed the door.
“Why?”
“Because you're your father's son.”
Dorian's jaw tightened.
“Did you frame me?”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Nathan looked at Marin.
“She's the reason you're still alive.”
Marin frowned.
“What?”
“Your husband left something behind.”
“What?”
“A recording.”
Nathan explained.
Daniel had discovered the network.
He had copied evidence.
But before he died, he gave a duplicate to someone he trusted.
Nathan.
Nathan had hidden it.
Not to protect the criminals.
To protect Daniel's wife.
He had spent years trying to expose the network from outside.
But someone had found him.
So he disappeared.
“What happened to Rachel?”
Nathan looked down.
“I told her to run.”
“Did you threaten her?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Nathan's expression became grim.
“Marcus.”
Dorian's eyes narrowed.
“Where is he?”
“Dead.”
Everyone froze.
Nathan continued.
“Marcus died six years ago.”
“But we saw evidence of him.”
“Because someone used his identity.”
“Who?”
Nathan stared at Dorian.
“Your father's private secretary.”
Dorian's face changed.
“Thomas Reed.”
Nathan nodded.
Thomas had remained in the organization for twenty years.
Quiet.
Loyal.
Invisible.
He had access to signatures.
Records.
Accounts.
Family archives.
Everything.
Marin suddenly understood.
“The person behind the network wasn't one of the people we were chasing.”
Nathan shook his head.
“It was Thomas.”
Dorian remembered.
Thomas had attended his father's funeral.
He had comforted Dorian.
He had helped manage the estate.
He had even been the one to recommend Martin Hale as legal counsel.
The entire time, he had been standing beside the family.
Watching.
Waiting.
Building.
Dorian called Gabriel.
“Find Thomas.”
“He's gone.”
“Where?”
“His house is empty.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“He'll go to the archive.”
Dorian looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because Thomas believes your father hid the final ledger there.”
“What final ledger?”
Nathan pointed toward Dorian.
“The one that proves who funded the network.”
Dorian understood.
Thomas wasn't trying to destroy him.
He was trying to control the evidence.
They reached the old family estate at midnight.
The house was dark.
Too dark.
Dorian entered first.
Marin followed with Sofia and Gabriel.
Titan stayed beside Marin.
They reached the study.
The hidden compartment was open.
Thomas stood inside.
He held a gun.
Dorian stopped.
Marin froze.
Thomas smiled.
“You finally understand.”
Dorian's voice was cold.
“You killed Daniel.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
“You forged the documents.”
“Yes.”
“You framed me.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed my family.”
Thomas's expression changed.
“No.”
He looked at Sofia.
“Your father did that long before I did.”
Sofia stepped forward.
“You murdered people.”
Thomas smiled.
“I protected the system.”
“From what?”
“Chaos.”
Marin stared at him.
“You called dead workers chaos?”
Thomas's face hardened.
“People forget. Investors don't.”
Dorian moved slightly.
Thomas raised the gun.
“Don't.”
Titan growled.
Thomas looked at the dog.
“Control him.”
Dorian didn't move.
“I don't think he likes you.”
Thomas laughed.
Then Marin noticed something.
Thomas's right hand was shaking.
Not fear.
Pain.
He had an injured wrist.
His grip was weak.
She whispered to Dorian—
“Left side.”
Dorian understood.
Thomas's attention shifted toward Titan.
That was enough.
Dorian moved.
The gun hit the floor.
Gabriel tackled Thomas.
Security entered seconds later.
Thomas was arrested.
No dramatic execution.
No revenge.
Just handcuffs.
For once, the truth would be handled by courts instead of fear.
But Thomas had one final weapon.
He looked at Dorian as officers escorted him away.
“You still don't know what your father did.”
Dorian stared.
Thomas smiled.
“He wasn't trying to protect people.”
“He was trying to become untouchable.”
Then he disappeared down the hallway.
Dorian stood silently.
Marin walked to him.
“Whatever your father did, it belongs to the past.”
Dorian looked at her.
“What if it changes everything?”
“Then we change with it.”
He took her hand.
“And if you decide you don't want to marry me?”
Marin squeezed his fingers.
“Then I'll tell you.”
A small smile appeared.
“But I haven't decided that.”
For the first time in weeks, Dorian breathed.
Then Sofia called from the study.
“Dorian.”
May you like
He turned.
“There is one more file.”
