Chapter 10 - CLARA DISCOVERED THAT HEALING DID NOT MEAN NEVER BEING AFRAID AGAIN

Three years after chair incident, Clara had panic attack in hospital elevator.
Unexpected.
She had entered for board member visit.
Pediatric floor button lit accidentally when another passenger pressed.
Ding.
Smell.
Disinfectant.
Sophie.
Her body remembered before mind.
Hands numb.
Breath.
She stepped out wrong floor.
Children’s oncology.
Decorated walls.
Stars.
She froze.
Matteo was with her.
He said nothing dramatic.
“Clara.”
She could not answer.
He gently:
“Can I touch you?”
She nodded.
Hand.
Not hug yet.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“You are in Chicago.”
“Yes.”
“You are forty-one.”
“Yes.”
“Sophie is not behind those doors.”
Tears.
“I know.”
“Body doesn’t.”
Correct.
They moved stairwell.
She cried.
“I thought I was past this.”
Matteo shook.
“No.”
“I hate that sentence.”
“What?”
“Past.”
“Like grief is highway exit.”
She laughed through tears.
Good.
Then she said:
“I want to leave.”
“Okay.”
No insist visit.
They left.
Later Clara felt ashamed.
He reminded:
“You sat through murder trial with me.”
“That doesn’t mean oncology floor owes you bravery.”
Perfect.
Her therapy resumed more intensely.
Sophie’s anniversary.
Evan checked in.
Matteo did not become jealous.
Growth.
Clara visited grave.
Matteo waited car first, then she invited.
He met Sophie properly.
He brought no flowers? Maybe small toy dog with clothes because Sophie laughed at dogs wearing clothes.
Clara saw.
Started crying and laughing.
“You remembered.”
“Of course.”
They placed tiny ceramic dog with raincoat near stone? Cemetery rules maybe temporary.
Clara said:
“She would have loved this.”
Matteo whispered:
“I wish I knew her.”
Not replacing.
She kissed him.
This emotional depth led proposal later.
But before, corporate crisis.
Anonymous allegation accused Clara of exploiting relationship for contracts/promotion.
Board had documentation.
Still reputational.
Media got.
“MAFIA BOSS PROMOTES GIRLFRIEND.”
Sexist.
Clara furious.
Matteo wanted sue.
Clara said no.
Company commissioned independent review of promotions/compensation/conflicts.
She agreed.
Painful.
Records showed promotion initiated before romance; compensation benchmarked; reporting independent.
Cleared.
Public summary.
No retaliation.
Then source of allegation?
Former executive dismissed for procurement controls? Maybe someone connected to old guard, but not necessary. Could be disgruntled.
Clara learned she could not control whispers.
Matteo learned he could not silence.
At one board meeting, director asked if relationship creates continuing reputational risk.
Clara answered herself.
“Yes.”
Silence.
“Any high-profile relationship can.”
“That does not mean one partner’s career ends.”
“Governance manages conflict.”
“Women do not become unemployable because CEOs develop feelings.”
Room quiet.
Good.
Director agreed.
Policies strengthened.
Matteo later:
“You were terrifying.”
“Learned from you.”
“Unfortunate.”
They laughed.
Then proposal in kitchen.
As source, onion.
But could reserve chapter12? We need 15. Here perhaps engagement end chap10, then wedding later, family and legacy.
At Clara apartment, Matteo cooking.
He chopped onions badly.
She took knife.
“You’re dangerous.”
“I’ve been told.”
Then he reached pocket.
Ring.
Clara stared.
“Matteo.”
He said:
“Marry me.”
She frowned.
“That was terrible.”
“What?”
“No speech?”
“You hate speeches.”
“Long speeches.”
He sighed.
Then:
“Clara Bennett.”
“I love that you laugh loudly.”
“I love that you say no to me without fear.”
“I love that you force me to understand no is not abandonment.”
“I love Sophie even though I never knew her because she is part of you.”
Clara broke.
“And I love Leo because he made you impossible before I got here.”
She laughed.
Then:
“I do not need children from you to call life family.”
Important.
“I do not need you to work for me.”
“I do not need you to fix grief.”
“I want you.”
“Free.”
“Annoying.”
“Mine only if you keep choosing.”
Tears.
“Yes.”
Then condition:
“The lamp stays.”
He sighed.
“No.”
She kissed.
Engaged.
No instant wedding.
Therapy, prenup, governance, family.
May you like
Good.
Happy building.
