Chapter 5 - LILY REFUSED TO REPRESENT THE MEN WHO THOUGHT HER NAME COULD FORCE ADRIAN TO PAY

By spring, the worker cases had become national news.
Moretti Maritime was no longer “old mafia company that became legitimate.”
Now headlines called it:
MORETTI EXPOSURE SCANDAL.
The history returned because history always helps journalists shorten context.
Photos of Adrian from fifteen years earlier appeared beside current workers.
Stories repeated Dominic’s old drugging case.
Question:
Had Moretti reforms been cosmetic?
Fair question.
Painful.
Lily’s nonprofit received sixty-seven calls in one week from Moretti workers.
Her director called her into office.
“You cannot touch.”
“I know.”
“Not intake.”
“I know.”
“Not internal research.”
“I know.”
“Not even referral decisions.”
Lily frowned.
“Why not referrals?”
“Because people may interpret your involvement as access to Adrian.”
She hated.
Correct.
Her director continued:
“We are setting wall.”
“Another attorney handles.”
“You have no file access.”
“Fine.”
Good.
Then three workers appeared in lobby asking specifically for her.
One said:
“You’re Moretti’s daughter.”
“No.”
Lily replied.
“Stepdaughter.”
“Same.”
“No.”
He looked confused.
“We saw online.”
“Can you tell him we don’t want lawsuits if he pays medical and lost wages?”
Lily felt anger rise.
Not at worker.
At how her relationship became channel.
“I cannot carry settlement message.”
“Why?”
“Because I do not represent you.”
“You work here.”
“My organization may.”
“I do not.”
The worker stared.
“Then what good is knowing him?”
There.
Lily breathed.
“For this case, none.”
That answer surprised both.
She helped receptionist connect them to conflict-cleared attorney.
Then walked outside and cried.
Not because insult.
Because she wanted help.
Claire met later.
“I feel useless.”
“You aren’t.”
“I literally had to say none.”
“Good boundary.”
“Stop.”
Claire smiled.
Lily threw napkin.
Then:
“Mom, did you ever want to use Adrian?”
Claire thought.
“For what?”
“Everything.”
“Money.”
“Contacts.”
“Jobs.”
“Of course.”
“You didn’t.”
“Sometimes I did within normal marriage.”
“Difference?”
Claire smiled.
“I use his airline points.”
“Mom.”
“Seriously?”
“Yes.”
Claire continued.
“I ask myself whether resource comes with role I didn’t choose.”
“Shared household money?”
“Fine.”
“Private favor while employee?”
“No.”
“Calling his executive because hospital billing annoyed me?”
“No.”
“Using his car on vacation?”
“Fine.”
“Having him pressure your professor?”
“Never.”
Lily nodded.
“Workers want me to pressure.”
“Yes.”
“Would pressure help?”
“Maybe.”
“Then why wrong?”
“Because if Adrian pays only because you can reach him, what happens to worker whose stepdaughter isn’t Lily?”
There.
Lily closed eyes.
“Everything is systems.”
“Unfortunately.”
“Adrian infects.”
They laughed.
Then Lily did something better.
She wrote internal memo to nonprofit board suggesting they seek funding from independent sources to expand worker-intake capacity so no claimant had to rely on Moretti money.
No public heroism.
Administrative.
Useful.
Meanwhile Adrian faced a more personal problem.
Dominic called.
They spoke perhaps every few months now.
No business.
No home access.
Coffee.
Birthdays.
This call:
“I know Thomas.”
Adrian became still.
“How?”
“Years ago.”
“From company?”
“Yes.”
“Before I left.”
“What?”
“He came through strategic planning.”
“I interviewed.”
“Did you recommend?”
“Not final.”
“Do you have relevant records?”
“Maybe.”
Adrian stopped.
Old instinct: send everything now.
Instead:
“Do not send me.”
Dominic paused.
“Why?”
“Contact outside counsel.”
“Which?”
Adrian gave investigator name.
Dominic sounded almost amused.
“You don’t want to know first.”
“No.”
“That must hurt.”
“Yes.”
Good.
Two days later outside counsel informed board Dominic voluntarily supplied archived personal notebooks and emails from his prior Moretti tenure.
One note from nine years earlier:
TV aggressive on metric normalization. Smart but treats safety as negotiable operating input. Recommend oversight.
Adrian stared.
“Dominic warned?”
Apparently.
During transition years, Dominic had noted concern.
But Adrian had distrusted anything Dominic said after betrayal.
By time Thomas hired, Dominic no longer had role.
His warning never entered official personnel file.
Adrian felt sick.
He called Dominic.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I did once.”
“When?”
“Coffee, six years ago.”
Adrian searched memory.
Dominic had said:
Vale reminds me of Father.
Adrian responded:
You do not get opinions on my executives.
He remembered.
“Why didn’t you put formal?”
“I had no standing.”
“You could have written board.”
Dominic laughed bitterly.
“And you would have called manipulation.”
Maybe.
Then:
“I was trying to respect no business.”
There.
Boundaries can also withhold useful information.
No simple.
“Was concern based on wrongdoing?”
“No.”
“Style.”
“Metric games.”
“Nothing criminal.”
“So warning might not change.”
“No.”
Adrian exhaled.
“I’m sorry I dismissed because source.”
Dominic went quiet.
“Thank you.”
“Do not make big.”
“I won’t.”
Then Dominic said:
“I have something else.”
“What?”
“Thomas once asked me how board handled your incapacity.”
Adrian’s body went cold.
“When?”
“Before scandal.”
“Eight years ago.”
“Why?”
“He was doing governance review.”
“Reasonable.”
“Yes.”
“He also asked whether medical information could trigger succession.”
Adrian closed eyes.
“Did you answer?”
“General.”
“Nothing confidential.”
“Was Thomas planning?”
“I don’t know.”
Facts.
Good.
No conspiracy leap.
Investigators later found no link between Thomas and Dominic’s old crimes.
The question had been part of executive-risk review.
Nothing more.
Adrian felt embarrassed.
How quickly fear connected unrelated dots.
Claire told:
“Trauma likes patterns.”
“Yes.”
“Doesn’t mean pattern real.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
He glared.
Then financial pressure intensified.
Government suspended Terminal 12’s naval certification.
A major customer canceled.
Quarterly revenue down.
Board considered selling Moretti Development to cover maritime liabilities.
That would unravel decades.
Adrian owned controlling economic interest but not unilateral governance.
He wanted to inject personal cash.
Board resisted.
Why?
“Because if you rescue capital in exchange equity, independence decreases.”
Patricia said.
“I can contribute without control.”
“Donation to corporation?”
“Bad structure.”
“Subordinated loan?”
“Potential.”
“Independent terms?”
“Yes.”
They negotiated.
Not heroic blank check.
Outside valuation.
No voting rights.
Cap.
Adrian lent company $40 million on below-market? Better must be fair. At market terms with repayment subordinated. This helps liquidity but does not solve exposure liabilities.
He also suspended his dividends.
Other family shareholders objected.
Board voted suspension for all.
Good.
Then employee medical program offered long-term monitoring.
Workers’ attorneys rejected first version.
Too broad release.
Company revised.
No release required for testing.
Legal claims separate.
Progress.
Diego Alvarez, recovering from fall, appeared by video at union meeting.
He said:
“I don’t care if Adrian Moretti sleeps at night.”
Adrian watched recording later.
“I care if my kid sleeps without stomach pain.”
That sentence stayed.

The scandal was not Adrian’s redemption story.
He had to keep remembering.
