Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT SOMEONE PLANTED A GUN IN MIA’S ROOM

The weapon was found beneath Mia’s bed.
Loaded.
Unregistered.
Connected by ballistic testing to a shooting in New Jersey.
Adrian stared at it inside an evidence bag.
His entire body went cold.
“This house has layered security.”
Dante’s face looked murderous.
“I know.”
“Two people enter Mia’s room regularly.”
“Elena.”
“Housekeeping with Elena’s approval.”
“And us.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
They checked cameras.
Nothing.
Then discovered twelve minutes missing from the upstairs system.
Not deleted.
Looped.
Professional.
Someone still inside the Moretti network possessed old access.
Federal agents arrived.
Because Adrian called them.
That mattered.
Years earlier, illegal firearm in his estate would have disappeared.
Now he handed it over.
The weapon’s history pointed toward an unsolved Santoro-linked shooting.
Whoever planted it wanted Adrian implicated in old violence.
Or Elena.
Her fingerprints?
None.
Adrian’s?
None.
But the location mattered.
A child’s bedroom.
Psychological.
The press somehow learned within hours.
Headline:
GUN LINKED TO MOB KILLING FOUND IN MORETTI FAMILY HOME.
Sofia’s lawyers immediately argued Adrian’s household was unsafe for Mia.
A child-services inquiry began.
Elena nearly exploded.
“They put a gun under my daughter’s bed and now I’m being investigated?”
Adrian held her hands.
“I know.”
“No.”
“I want to break something.”
He almost smiled.
“Now who’s violent?”
She glared.
“Not helping.”
Child-services investigators arrived professionally.
They interviewed Mia.
Elena.
Adrian.
Checked storage.
Firearms.
Security.
Adrian disclosed everything.
Legal weapons.
Old licenses.
Security protocols.
He hated strangers walking through Mia’s room.
Accepted it.
Because transparency protected her better than intimidation.
Mia asked the investigator:
“Are you taking me?”
Elena’s heart broke.
“No,” the woman said gently.
“I’m checking that you’re safe.”
“I am.”
“Good.”
“My dad has scary men.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Dante looked offended.
The investigator smiled.
“Are the scary men nice to you?”
“Mostly.”
“Dante says no candy before dinner.”
“Then I support Dante.”
Mia looked betrayed.
The inquiry closed quickly.
No safety finding.
But the planted weapon remained.
Dante found the breach.
A maintenance technician named Gabriel Knox.
Worked estate electrical systems eight years.
His daughter received an anonymous $100,000 trust payment three months earlier.
Payer:
Cedar Arch Consulting.
Connected to Peter Vale.
Gabriel disappeared before questioning.
Adrian’s old instincts screamed.
Hunt.
Drag him back.
Instead, they issued warrant information.
Tracked accounts.
Gabriel was arrested at Newark airport.
He confessed.
Peter Vale contacted him months before.
Backup plan.
If Sofia lost control, plant evidence inside Adrian’s home to trigger law enforcement scrutiny and custody questions around Mia.
Peter believed Adrian would respond violently.
That was the trap.
Plant gun.
Authorities arrive.
Adrian resists.
Shots.
Arrest.
Empire destabilized.
Sofia regains argument that Adrian is unfit.
Except Adrian did not resist.
He invited authorities.
Old assumptions had failed again because Adrian changed.
Peter Vale realized it too.
He accepted a cooperation agreement.
His testimony connected Sofia directly to Daniel’s intimidation, hospital intrusion, witness threats, and the planted gun plot.
Sofia’s trial date was set.
Then disaster arrived from another direction.
Moretti Maritime lenders froze a major credit facility after the scandal.
Three shipping contracts paused.
Thousands of legitimate jobs faced risk.
Board members demanded Adrian resign temporarily.
Not because guilt was proven.
Because volatility cost money.
Dante expected refusal.
Elena did too.
Adrian sat in the boardroom.
Looked at the numbers.
Five thousand employees.
Families.
Paychecks.
He thought of Lucia.
The checks clear either way.
Old Adrian.
Then he said:
“I’ll step down as CEO.”
The room froze.
One director blinked.
“Temporarily?”
“For twelve months.”
“Independent interim chief executive.”
“Full audit.”
“No family appointee.”
Dante stared.
Afterward:
“You gave them the company.”
“No.”
“I gave professionals the job.”
“Same thing.”
“No.”
Adrian looked at him.
“That is what Sofia never understood.”
Power did not need to remain in his hand to remain useful.
At home, Elena found him alone in the study.
No papers.
No phone.
Just sitting.
“You okay?”
“No.”
She smiled slightly.
“Good answer.”
He looked at the desk.
“I built that company from half-rotten docks.”
“I know.”
“Now someone else runs it.”
“For a year.”
“Still.”
Elena sat beside him.
“Do you regret stepping down?”
“No.”
“Then what hurts?”
He thought.
“Not being necessary.”
She understood.
His whole life had been built around being indispensable.
If everyone needed him, nobody could leave without consequence.
But Mia needed him differently.
Not as CEO.
Not Don.
Dad.
Elena whispered:
“You are necessary here.”
He looked.
“Not because we can’t survive without you.”
That distinction mattered.
“Because we choose you.”
Adrian’s eyes filled.
Then footsteps approached.
Mia entered carrying oatmeal.
At nine at night.
Adrian stared.
“What is that?”
“You didn’t eat dinner.”
Elena started laughing.
Mia climbed onto a chair.
Raised a spoon.
“Open.”
Adrian looked at his wife.
“She’s doing it again.”
Elena smiled.
May you like
“You heard her.”
Adrian opened his mouth.
