Chapter 7 - THE MAN BEHIND MY SISTER HAD BUILT A SECOND EMPIRE INSIDE MINE

Vanessa’s cooperation produced forty-seven names.
Most meant nothing.
A few meant everything.
Thomas Bellini controlled more than Adrian had understood.
Three Moretti accountants reported privately to him.
Two trucking companies paid Bellini-owned consultants.
A private security contractor maintained files outside Marco’s system.
Six judges had received legal campaign contributions from entities Thomas influenced.
Nothing automatically criminal.
Then came cash.
Millions.
Moved through construction vendors.
Parking companies.
Warehouse leases.
Loan portfolios.
Some money belonged to Moretti businesses.
Some belonged to the criminal organization.
Some had no clear owner because people had spent decades making sure ownership could not be clearly explained.
Thomas had built what Marco called a continuity network.
Adrian called it a coup.
Rebecca corrected both.
“We call it evidence.”
Everyone had become irritating.
The most disturbing document was a succession chart.
At the top:
ADRIAN MORETTI — CURRENT AUTHORITY
Below:
Possible removal conditions.
Indictment.
Incapacity.
Death.
“Reputational fracture.”
Then:
ETHAN MORETTI — SYMBOLIC CONTINUITY
Not operational leader.
Symbol.
A child’s name used to keep captains loyal while Thomas and a committee controlled everything.
Adrian stared.
“He never intended Ethan to run anything.”
Marco nodded.
“He intended Ethan to make everyone else obey.”
The idea disgusted Adrian.
Thomas understood the family better than most.
Men would tolerate a committee if they believed they were preserving the Moretti line for Adrian’s son.
Ethan did not need to speak.
Did not need to understand.
He only needed to exist.
Silent.
Grieving.
Photographed at funerals.
Brought to dinners.
A child turned into a flag.
Claire read the structure once.
Then pushed it away.
“This is what Sophia was afraid of.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Claire looked at Adrian.
“She was afraid of more than Thomas.”
“What?”
“She was afraid you might accept this because it looked like protection.”
Adrian wanted to reject that.
Could not.
A year earlier, if someone told him a continuity committee would shield Ethan until adulthood, he might have approved it.
The family survives.
The boy remains safe.
Adults handle power.
Except the boy’s name becomes the lock on the door.
“Where is Thomas?” Adrian asked.
Marco said:
“Missing.”
Of course.
Last known location:
Bellini Strategic Holdings.
Then a private airfield.
No confirmed departure.
His passport remained unused.
Maybe hiding locally.
Maybe not.
Vanessa identified one place he used when problems became serious.
An old Moretti-owned convent property outside Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
The family had purchased it decades earlier.
Now used for retreats and storage.
Police obtained warrants related to financial evidence and witness intimidation.
Adrian did not go first.
That was becoming a pattern.
He hated it less.
Thomas was not there.
But records were.
Boxes.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
And Michael DeSantis’s original police file.
Vanessa had told the truth.
Michael’s death had been classified as robbery.
The file contained an unlogged witness statement.
A gas-station employee saw another vehicle follow Michael.
License plate partial.
Linked at the time to Bellini Strategic Security.
Thomas’s company.
Not proof Thomas ordered murder.
But enough to reopen questions.
Then they found a cassette recording.
Thomas’s voice.
Michael’s voice.
Argument.
Michael:
“I’m done moving money for Lorenzo’s people.”
Thomas:
“You don’t decide when you’re done.”
Michael:
“Vanessa is coming with me.”
Thomas:
“She belongs to the family.”
That sentence made Adrian sick.
People as possessions.
Again.
The recording ended.
No murder confession.
Still damaging.
More files linked Dr. Lenox directly to Thomas.
Treatment notes sent without Adrian’s knowledge.
One email:
Patient remains resistant to separation from maternal narrative. Recommend continued reduction of memory reinforcement.
Claire read it twice.
“Maternal narrative?”
Marco looked confused.
Claire’s face hardened.
“His mother.”
They reduced a dead woman to a narrative.
Another email from Thomas:
Silence remains preferable until trust review concludes.
There.
Purpose.
Not simply misguided therapy.
Ethan’s silence had become part of a financial strategy.
Lenox was arrested later on charges related to fraud, falsification, and unlawful disclosure where evidence supported them.
His professional board opened separate proceedings.
Thomas remained missing.
Then someone broke into Harbor House.
Claire received the call at 2:11 a.m.
Her office door forced.
Files opened.
Nothing obvious stolen.
Adrian arrived twenty minutes after police.
Claire stood in the hallway wearing sweatpants beneath her coat.
Her auburn hair messy.
No makeup.
Angry.
“You should not be here.”
He blinked.
“You called Marco.”
“Because security evidence involves Thomas.”
“Yes.”
“That was not an invitation.”
He almost smiled.
“Good to see you too.”
“This is serious.”
“I know.”
“Ethan’s files were touched.”
That removed humor.
“Anything taken?”
“Copies are secured digitally elsewhere.”
“What physical?”
“Artwork.”
“Group notes.”
“Letters children wrote to deceased parents.”
Adrian went still.
“Why would Thomas want that?”
Claire looked sick.
“Maybe to find something Ethan said.”
They searched.
One folder missing.
Ethan’s.
Not clinical records.
Art folder.
Adrian remembered the red memory box.
“Did he draw something?”
Claire thought.
“Three months ago.”
“What?”
“A house.”
“What house?”
“He said his mom’s quiet house.”
Sophia’s Evanston studio.
Thomas already knew?
Maybe.
Then Claire remembered another drawing.
“Wait.”
She searched digital scans.
Found it.
A black building.
A man with a cane.
A red door.
Adrian’s body tightened.
“What is that?”
Claire enlarged the image.
Ethan had drawn himself behind a window.
Sophia beside him.
Outside, a tall man.
Cane.
Claire read the session note.
Ethan stated: “Uncle Thomas came to Mom’s secret place and she told me to stay quiet.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
“When?”
“Drawing was six weeks ago.”
“No.”
“When did the event happen?”
Claire checked.
“Ethan said before Mom died.”
Thomas had known the studio.
Sophia had confronted him there.
Maybe Ethan witnessed something.
“Where is Ethan now?”
“With Teresa.”
“Call.”
Adrian did.
No answer.
Again.
His chest seized.
Second call.
Teresa answered.
“He’s asleep.”
Adrian nearly collapsed.
“Wake him.”
“What?”
“Please.”
She did.
Ethan came on.
“Dad?”
“Hey.”
“Is Claire okay?”
Adrian looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Did Uncle Thomas find my picture?”
The room stopped.
Adrian whispered:
“What picture?”
“The one Mom said I should never show him.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“What was on it?”
Ethan’s voice became smaller.
“The red door.”
Adrian asked:
“What was behind the red door?”
A long pause.
Then:
“Mom’s computer.”
Claire and Adrian looked at each other.
Sophia’s studio had been searched after her death.
No computer.
Maybe there had been one.
Ethan continued:
“She hid it in the wall.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
His dead wife had not only hidden letters.
May you like
She had hidden evidence.
And Thomas had just broken into Harbor House to find the child’s drawing showing where.
