Chapter 6 - SOMEONE LEAKED LEO’S THERAPY RECORDS TO A TABLOID

The article appeared at 6:04 on a Monday morning.
I woke to Dante pounding on our bedroom door.
Not knocking.
Pounding.
Ricardo reached for bedside drawer automatically.
No gun—we had rules about weapons in bedroom with Leo in house. He grabbed phone.
“What?”
Dante entered.
“Leo’s therapy notes leaked.”
Everything inside me froze.
“What?”
He handed tablet.
Headline:
INSIDE MORETTI HEIR’S DISTURBING CHILDHOOD: AGGRESSION, SEPARATION PANIC, DEAD-MOTHER OBSESSION
I stopped breathing.
The article quoted fragments.
Not full clinical notes.
Enough.
Age three biting.
Glass throwing.
Sleep disruption.
Fear of abandonment.
One line:
Father emotionally unavailable during grief episodes.
Ricardo went white.
Not angry first.
Shame.
Then rage.
“Where is Leo?”
“School transport delayed.”
“Does he know?”
“Not yet.”
We moved instantly.
Not cover story.
Truth.
Leo was twelve now.
Old enough to have phone.
Old enough classmates would send.
Evelyn called before we reached breakfast room.
“Tell him before internet does.”
Yes.
Leo entered in uniform.
Looked at our faces.
“What?”
Ricardo sat.
“Something private was published.”
Leo’s face changed.
“What?”
“Notes from when you were younger.”
“Therapy?”
“Yes.”
He went pale.
“How?”
“We don’t know.”
“Who?”
“We don’t know.”
“Why?”
“We’re finding.”
His hands shook.
“What did they say?”
We showed article.
Not hide.
He read.
Halfway:
“I was three.”
“Yes.”
“Why do they call disturbing?”
“Because headlines are written by people who need clicks.”
I said.
He laughed once, then cried.
“They wrote Dad didn’t touch me.”
Ricardo’s face broke.
Leo looked at him.
“I know why now.”
That was compassion from child toward father.
Too much maybe.
Ricardo said:
“You don’t have to protect me from it.”
Good.
Leo threw tablet.
Not at wall.
Onto couch.
Progress.
“I’m not going school.”
Ricardo started:
“You—”
Then stopped.
“What do you need?”
Good.
“Not school.”
“Okay.”
One day.
Then lawyer.
Evelyn.
Security.
The leak was violation.
Her practice records encrypted.
The excerpts were not from current clinic system.
They were from old paper summaries shared with Moretti family office during custody/security planning years ago.
That narrowed.
Who had access?
Family counsel.
Security.
Ricardo.
Victor-era executives.
Anthony’s files.
Victor perhaps.
Dante looked sick.
“We created vulnerability.”
Because grief had been treated as family management issue.
Notes circulated too broadly.
The system Isabella warned about again.
Investigation traced copy to old family-office archive.
Someone accessed one month earlier using credentials belonging to retired assistant of Victor.
The assistant denied.
Her password had been shared historically.
Bad security.
Then payment.
Tabloid paid source through intermediary.
Intermediary linked to a public-relations consultant currently working for Victor.
Ricardo wanted call Victor.
Counsel:
“No.”
He listened.
The consultant admitted obtaining archive from former Moretti employee and leaking to pressure Ricardo during ongoing civil negotiations.
Victor denied authorizing leak.
Did he know?
Evidence showed consultant sent message:
I have something that makes golden boy look unstable.
Victor replied:
Do what you think is useful.
There.
Again ambiguous.
Useful.
System.
Victor later claimed he meant financial documents.
Could be.
But consultant acted.
Family culture repeating.
Civil case.
Privacy claims.
Employment confidentiality.
Consultant lost contract and faced lawsuit.
More important:
Leo.
He stayed home three days.
Then wanted return school.
Ricardo wanted transfer him.
I said:
“Ask.”
Leo said no.
“I’m not running.”
Good.
Security school increased temporarily.
Not dramatic.
Then classmates.
One boy said:
“Did you really bite bodyguard?”
Leo answered:
“Yes.”
“Cool.”
Kids.
Another:
“Your mom died and you went crazy.”
Leo punched him.
Problem.
School suspended one day.
Ricardo arrived furious.
At whom?
Initially other child.
Then Leo.
Then himself.
I stayed out of discipline discussion? I was stepmother, yes involved.
At home:
Ricardo:
“You cannot hit people.”
Leo:
“He said Mom—”
“I know.”
“No.”
“You don’t.”
“He said I was crazy.”
“You were hurt.”
“So?”
“So feelings do not choose your hands.”
Ricardo paused.
That sentence probably felt personal given Moretti history.
Leo looked.
“Did Uncle Victor hit people?”
Silence.
“Probably.”
“Did Grandpa?”
Ricardo answered:
“Yes.”
“Did you?”
“When I was younger, yes.”
“How younger?”
“Adult.”
Leo stared.
“Then why do I get punished?”
Good.
Ricardo sat.
“Because I learned late.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“No.”
“It isn’t.”
Then:
“My job is not to let you repeat my mistakes just because I made them first.”
Excellent.
Consequence:
Apology.
School meeting.
Lost gaming privileges? Could be.
More important restorative.
He wrote letter to boy? They met counselor.
The boy also apologized for comment.
Both.
No hero/villain.
Then Leo asked to see full therapy notes.
Evelyn said clinically maybe not all, but summaries with context.
He wanted ownership.
We arranged records in age-appropriate manner.
He read.
“Father appears avoidant.”
Leo smiled.
“Accurate.”
Ricardo glared.
Then:
“Child demonstrates strong attachment to familiar adult Clara Bennett.”
He looked at me.
“You were familiar adult?”
“I was cheap labor.”
“Not cheap.”
Ricardo corrected.
I glared.
Leo laughed.
Privacy violation became chance to reclaim narrative.
We issued one statement:
Leo Moretti was a grieving three-year-old receiving appropriate care after his mother’s death. The unauthorized publication of private pediatric mental-health information is being addressed through legal channels. We will not discuss his treatment publicly.
Nothing else.
No denial.
No shame.
Then Moretti company policy changed.
Family office no longer received therapeutic notes beyond safety requirements.
Mental health data protected independently.
Security cannot demand content.
Only relevant accommodations.
Dante supported.
“Wish we knew sooner.”
We know now.
The leak also affected Stay With Me program.
Parents worried being associated with Moretti.
I held meeting.
Explained program records separate, no Moretti access, strict confidentiality.
One mother asked:
“Can you guarantee nothing ever leaks?”
No.
“I can tell you what systems we use and what happens if they fail.”
Honest.
They stayed.
Then a local newspaper wrote better story about child mental-health privacy.
Good.
Not all media enemy.
Leo eventually returned Il Verano for first time since age three.
Not planned symbolism.
Ricardo had dinner.
Leo asked come.
We sat same area? The restaurant renovated.
Philippe no longer manager.
Sarah had moved.
A waiter set crystal glasses.
Leo stared.
Then smiled.
“Three?”
Dante:
“Three glasses and plate.”
Ricardo:
“Four glasses.”
I said:
“You are all wrong.”
Leo touched glass.
For one terrifying second, raised.
Then drank water.
“Relax.”
We laughed.
The room did not go silent.
Nobody stared.
That was healing.
Then Leo looked at empty chair.
Not same chair.
Still.
“Mama used to sit?”
“Yes.”
Ricardo answered.
Leo nodded.
No meltdown.
No shame.
Grief had become one part of him.
May you like
Not room.
Isabella had hoped.
