Plot twist

Chapter 10 - JULIAN WALKED INTO THE BOARDROOM WITH A GUN

Julian Cross chose the Blackwood Holdings annual board meeting for his final move.

It made sense.

He wanted an audience.

Not reporters.

Family.

Executives.

The people whose respect he believed had been stolen from him at birth.

The meeting took place three months after Noah’s birth.

Nate no longer served as CEO, but he remained chairman during transition.

Walter attended in person for the first time since kidnapping.

Shoulder healed.

Temper not.

Hannah was there because the board had requested her forensic analysis of the medical-access breach and succession trust fraud.

She almost refused.

Then decided she was tired of Blackwood rooms being places other people discussed her.

Noah stayed with Ethan’s sister and federal protection.

Safe.

At 10:42, Hannah finished presenting.

“The same authorization architecture Julian used to access hospital files appears in seven other family systems.”

She pointed toward screen.

“Security.”

“Private clinics.”

“Foundation payroll.”

“Vehicle dispatch.”

“Legal document vaults.”

Nate looked grim.

“How much remains compromised?”

“Enough that I would rebuild instead of patch.”

The interim CEO nodded.

“Cost?”

“Less than another kidnapping.”

Walter almost smiled.

Then the lights flickered.

Hannah froze.

Hospital.

Same sensation.

Once.

Twice.

Emergency lights.

Her blood turned cold.

“Nate.”

He was already moving.

Security doors automatically locked.

But one door opened.

Julian entered.

Gun in his right hand.

Blackwood executive badge in left.

Old access.

Backup credential nobody knew survived.

Two security men behind him.

Both former private contractors.

Board members screamed.

Nate stood.

Julian pointed the gun.

“Sit.”

Nate sat.

Not fear.

Strategy.

Hannah looked toward wall.

Fire suppression panel.

Emergency alarm.

Julian noticed her.

“Hannah.”

She stared.

“The accountant.”

“Forensic analyst.”

“Sorry.”

He smiled.

“You ruined several good plans.”

“Thank you.”

Walter whispered:

“Don’t provoke him.”

Julian laughed.

“Now you protect her.”

Walter stared.

Julian moved toward head of table.

“My grandfather built this.”

Nate answered:

“Our grandfather.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“Do not.”

“You wanted the name.”

“Use the relationship too.”

“I wanted recognition.”

“You wanted a newborn kidnapped.”

Julian raised gun.

Nate stopped.

Hannah watched.

He was unstable.

Angry.

But controlled enough to plan entry.

What did he want?

Not simply murder.

Papers.

He threw a folder down.

“Reinstate the Legacy Trust.”

Walter laughed.

Actually laughed.

Julian’s face changed.

“You think this is funny?”

“You brought a gun to a board meeting to request trust administration.”

Walter shook his head.

“You really are a Blackwood.”

“Walter.”

Hannah warned.

He stopped.

Julian continued:

“Sign.”

Nate looked at folder.

“No.”

“Your son dies without this.”

Hannah’s body went cold.

Nate’s face emptied.

“What did you do?”

Julian smiled.

“Nothing yet.”

Hannah did not believe him.

Noah’s location was federal.

Julian had failed to reach him for months.

Bluff.

Maybe.

She looked at the second gunman.

Nervous.

Kept glancing toward ventilation system.

Fire alarms?

Julian likely cut external communications.

But emergency suppression triggered local fire department independently.

Hannah slowly moved one foot.

Under table.

Emergency floor panel button near presentation controls.

She had noticed during setup.

Julian looked at Nate.

“You inherited my life.”

Nate answered:

“No.”

Julian’s expression snapped.

“You had the name.”

“The father.”

“The company.”

“You married whoever you wanted.”

“Your child was celebrated before he breathed.”

“My mother had to hide me.”

Nate’s voice softened.

“That was wrong.”

Julian froze.

Nate continued.

“What happened to you was wrong.”

“Grandfather was wrong.”

“Dad should have been told.”

“Margaret should have been allowed to keep you.”

“Yes.”

Julian’s gun lowered slightly.

“But Noah did not do that.”

Julian’s face twisted.

“Hannah did not.”

“Neither did I.”

“You benefited.”

“Yes.”

Again.

No denial.

“I benefited from a system that hurt you.”

“I’m helping end it.”

“You’re ending it so I can’t have it!”

“Yes.”

Nate’s voice hardened.

“Because nobody should.”

The boardroom went silent.

Julian stared.

He had spent his life believing justice meant finally sitting in the chair of the people who excluded him.

Nate had removed the chair.

That was unforgivable to him.

“You think giving it to employees makes you noble?”

“No.”

“It makes the trust less dangerous.”

Julian raised the gun again.

Hannah pressed the floor panel.

Nothing visible.

Then a red indicator beneath table flashed once.

Alarm transmitted.

Good.

Julian turned toward her.

“Did you touch something?”

“No.”

He stared.

Hannah met his eyes.

He walked closer.

Gun pointed toward her.

Nate stood.

“Julian.”

“Sit!”

Nate stopped.

Julian looked at Hannah.

“You should have left him.”

“I did.”

That confused him.

“You filed divorce.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because your crimes affected my son.”

“You still protect Nate.”

“No.”

Hannah’s voice remained calm.

“I’m protecting evidence.”

Julian laughed.

“You women always believe paperwork saves you.”

Hannah glanced toward ceiling sprinklers.

“Sometimes it buys time.”

Then the fire alarm exploded.

Julian spun.

Emergency strobes.

Sprinklers activated.

Water poured across room.

Chaos.

One board member screamed.

Gunman near ventilation cursed.

Nate moved.

Not toward Julian.

Toward Hannah.

He grabbed her chair and pulled her behind the massive stone conference table.

Walter kicked the folder toward the second gunman’s feet.

The man slipped on water.

A shot fired.

Glass shattered.

Federal tactical officers hit the outer door.

Julian grabbed Nate.

Gun against his throat.

Everyone froze.

Hannah looked over table.

“Nate.”

His eyes found hers.

Julian dragged him toward side exit.

“You’re coming with me.”

Nate did not fight.

Too close.

No clean angle.

Walter shouted:

“Julian!”

Julian turned.

Walter stood in open view.

“Take me.”

Nate’s face changed.

“No.”

Walter continued.

“You wanted recognition from this family.”

“I’m the head you blame.”

“Take me.”

Julian laughed.

“You think I want an old man?”

“No.”

Walter’s voice softened.

“I think you want someone to admit what happened.”

Julian stopped.

Walter continued:

“My father stole you from Margaret.”

“I benefited from silence.”

“I didn’t know your name.”

“But I lived inside the structure that erased you.”

Julian’s breathing changed.

“I’m sorry.”

No excuse.

Hannah watched.

Nate watched.

Julian’s gun trembled.

For one second, grief beat rage.

Enough.

Federal tactical officer fired a nonlethal round into Julian’s shoulder? Could be dangerous. Better stun? A sniper from broken door has angle.

A shot.

Julian screamed.

Gun fell.

Nate dropped.

Agents flooded room.

One contractor surrendered.

The other tried to fire and was shot in leg.

Julian was pinned.

Alive.

Nate crawled toward Hannah.

She stared.

“Are you hit?”

“No.”

“You?”

“No.”

Walter stood shaking.

No injuries.

For once, everyone survived.

Julian looked at Margaret’s brother? Walter.

His face wet from sprinklers and tears.

“You’re sorry now?”

Walter looked down.

“Yes.”

“Too late.”

Walter nodded.

“Yes.”

That answer seemed to break something.

Julian stopped fighting.

He was taken away.

Later, investigators confirmed Noah had never been reached.

The threat was bluff.

Hannah sat in the hallway wrapped in a blanket.

Nate sat five feet away.

No touching.

Both shaking.

After several minutes, she looked at him.

“You pulled me behind the table.”

“Yes.”

“Thank you.”

He almost laughed.

“You’re welcome.”

Silence.

Then Hannah said:

“You didn’t chase him when he ran.”

Nate looked.

“What?”

“After he dropped the gun.”

“You didn’t go after him.”

“Federal agents had him.”

Old Nate would have needed to finish the confrontation.

Nate understood what she noticed.

“I’m tired of confusing revenge with protection.”

Hannah’s eyes filled.

He looked away.

No reward requested.

Good.

Outside, sirens filled Midtown.

Inside, the last hidden Blackwood son was finally alive, visible, and in custody.

Not erased.

May you like

Not given an empire.

Just held responsible for what he chose to become after what was done to him.
