Chapter 7 - ROY TANNER FINALLY GAVE VINCENT THE NAME HE HAD BEEN PROTECTING, AND IT WAS THE LAST PERSON IN THE MORETTI FAMILY VINCENT WANTED TO HEAR

Roy Tanner came in with two attorneys.
No warehouse this time.
No intimidation.
Conference room at outside law firm.
Federal investigators would receive records separately.
Vincent did not attend.
Smart.
Roy spoke.
He had supplied Moretti properties for seventeen years.
At first legitimate.
Then Marco Moretti approached.
Not to order fraud directly.
To “improve margin.”
Roy switched some materials.
Difference split through consulting fees.
Charles later joined.
The system:
Invoice premium.
Deliver cheaper code-minimum or sometimes incorrectly approved substitute.
Use consulting company to move portion.
Alter inspection language.
Keep incidents low.
No one wrote “steal.”
They said:
Margin normalization.
Vendor flexibility.
Field substitution.
Executive reserve.
Corporate language can launder intent before money.
How much?
Across seventeen years, estimated $6.4 million improperly retained or distributed.
Not billions.
Still.
Safety consequence more serious.
Marco’s personal share perhaps $1.3 million over years.
Charles roughly $740,000 through side companies and benefits.
Roy kept rest with others.
Did Carlo Moretti know?
Roy hesitated.
“Yes.”
Vincent’s dead father.
“How much?”
“He started arrangement.”
There.
The system predated Vincent’s reforms.
When Vincent took control, Marco and Charles hid it inside legitimate procurement.
Why continue?
Because inspections internal.
Because Vincent focused shutting violent rackets and cleaning books at high level.
Because nobody expected him to inspect firestop.
Because employees like Maggie could be kept away from influence.
Then question:
Did Vincent know?
Roy:
“No.”
“Did he benefit?”
“Yes.”
Company paid less actual cost while books showed premium. But money diverted, so company overpaid invoices. Yet operating profits still. More importantly owner inherited from old scheme.
“Did Vincent ever tell you cut safety?”
“No.”
“Did he pressure price?”
“Yes.”
“Normal?”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever tell him substitutions not equivalent?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Marco told me not.”
Did Marco alter current records?
Roy said yes.
Marco retained VPN access as board member and “consultant.”
He occasionally changed reports to remove flags.
Charles gave credentials? Actually Marco used own account with access he should not have. Governance failure.
One message Roy preserved:
MARCO: V has become priest. If he sees word fire he’ll invite city hall. Clean notes before quarterly.
There.
Current intent.
Vincent read after investigators provided permitted summary.
He sat alone.
Calvin stood near window.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Vincent almost laughed.
Everyone infected.
“What do you want to do?”
“Nothing.”
Calvin looked surprised.
“Nothing?”
“Personally.”
“Lawyers.”
“Board.”
“Authorities.”
“Company.”
“I do nothing.”
“That sounds painful.”
“It is.”
Vincent wanted Marco in a room.
Wanted old solution.
Fear.
Confession.
He knew how.
That part of him had not disappeared with suits.
He also knew using it now would contaminate every legitimate process.
So he called Rebecca.
“What can I do?”
“Board suspension.”
“Access revoke.”
“Through committee.”
“Protect witnesses.”
“Notify carriers.”
“Cooperate.”
“Can I speak to him?”
“No.”
Vincent hated.
Good.
Independent directors voted suspend Marco from board pending shareholder process.
Family trust fought.
Marco’s allies claimed Vincent was using safety scandal to purge rivals.
Possible appearance.
So Vincent recused.
Independent committee voted 4-0.
Marco’s access removed.
He issued statement:
“Allegations from admitted fraudster Roy Tanner are false and motivated by leniency.”
True that Roy had motive.
Need corroboration.
Bank transfers.
Metadata.
Emails.
Three witnesses.
Physical records.
Evidence grew.
Then Maggie received an anonymous envelope at home.
Inside photocopy of her father’s letter.
Across it in red marker:
HE SHOULD HAVE KEPT HIS MOUTH SHUT TOO.
Maggie called police.
Then lawyer.
Then company security because workplace relation.
Not Vincent first.
Good.
Security camera at apartment entry showed hooded person leaving envelope.
No clear face.
Police investigated.
Vincent learned.
Everything inside him went dark.
Calvin saw.
“No.”
Vincent stared.
“You know what I’m thinking?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“She gets protection.”
“Yes.”
“Through professionals.”
“Yes.”
“Not cousins.”
Vincent’s hands tightened.
“Whoever sent—”
“Police.”
Vincent laughed bitterly.
“You enjoy saying.”
“No.”
“I enjoy you not going prison.”
Maggie accepted temporary security measures after threat assessment.
Not armed convoy.
Building camera.
Transport option for late shifts.
Hotel parking changes.
She refused moving into Moretti property.
Vincent did not ask.
Then investigators traced printer pattern.
The red-letter photocopy came from office copier at warehouse leased by a company connected to Marco’s former driver.
Driver, Louis Ferraro, was interviewed.
He admitted delivering envelope at Marco’s direction?
Not immediately.
He said Marco wanted “remind girl old business hurts everyone.”
Did Marco order threat language?
Louis said he wrote words himself.
Marco denied knowing wording.
Again, responsibility layers.
Still harassment/intimidation investigation.
Witness interference serious.
Marco’s legal position worsened.
Maggie was furious less from fear than insult.
At safety team meeting she said:
“My father did keep his mouth shut.”
Everyone looked.
“He wrote proper complaints.”
“He went through management.”
“He did everything workers are told.”
“Then he died and they buried paper.”
“So if lesson is keep mouth shut, no.”
She looked toward Vincent unexpectedly.
He was not in meeting.
Good.
Her supervisor said:
“Then what lesson?”
Maggie answered:
“Make system where speaking does not depend on powerful man deciding to be decent that day.”
That quote reached board anonymously in report.
Vincent read.
It hurt.
Correct.
He proposed permanent independent safety hotline and board safety committee.
Then withdrew himself as chair of committee.
Independent engineer appointed.
Systems.
Maggie’s threat stopped.
Marco faced restraining/no-contact order through court.
No revenge.
Then a Chicago Tribune investigative journalist found Roseland email through public filing.
Vincent’s name became headline.
MORETTI CEO READ WORKER FIRE WARNING 12 DAYS BEFORE DEADLY BLAZE
The article was accurate enough.
Opened forty-three seconds.
Forwarded “Handle.”
No follow-up.
Public did not care nuance.
Mafia heir ignores worker, man dies.
Maggie saw.
Her first reaction surprised.
Not satisfaction.
Fear.
Because she knew headlines flatten.
Vincent had failed.
Yes.
But current investigation existed partly because he listened now.
Did that matter?
Yes.
Did it erase?
No.
She refused reporter request to defend.
Good.
She was not his character witness.
Vincent’s board scheduled emergency review of his fitness as CEO.

For the first time, Marco’s scandal might remove Vincent too.
And Vincent decided he would not use Maggie Lawson’s suffering to save his job.
