Plot twist

Chapter 8 - THE NAME THEY ERASED

Nobody spoke.

Dominic stared at my mother.

“What did you say?”

My mother looked at me.

“Your original birth certificate carried your father's name.”

I frowned.

“My father was Daniel Harper.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Harper was the name he used after he disappeared.”

I felt dizzy.

“Then what was his real name?”

My mother looked toward Dominic.

“Daniel Pierce.”

Dominic stepped backward.

“No.”

Marcus whispered,

“That's why they were afraid.”

Dominic stared at my mother.

“My father had no other children.”

“He did.”

“Who?”

My mother answered quietly.

“Daniel.”

Dominic's face went blank.

“My father?”

“He had a son before you were born.”

I looked at him.

“You're related to my father.”

“Yes.”

Dominic sat down.

For the first time, he looked less like a mafia boss than a man who had just lost the ground beneath him.

“My father never told me.”

“He was afraid you would be used against each other.”

I looked at the flash drive.

“Why change my name?”

“Because Jonathan Reed discovered your father had hidden evidence.”

She explained that Daniel believed the only way to keep me alive was to erase every connection between me and the Pierce family.

I looked at Dominic.

“So we're…”

“Family,” my mother said.

The word felt impossible.

But suddenly so many things made sense.

Why Dominic had reacted to my father's watch.

Why he had protected me.

Why my father had trusted him.

Why he had kept the watch for three years.

Not because of guilt.

Because of a promise.

Cross slowly lowered his weapon.

“I didn't know.”

My mother looked at him.

“You knew enough.”

“I thought Daniel was working for Pierce.”

“He was.”

Cross looked confused.

“He was protecting Dominic.”

Dominic looked at me.

“I spent years believing my father had abandoned me.”

My mother shook her head.

“He spent his final years trying to protect both of you.”

I opened the flash drive.

The files were encrypted.

I recognized the structure immediately.

My father had used a translation cipher.

English sentence.

Russian sentence.

Five words repeated.

Blue winter.

I entered the phrase.

The files opened.

There were bank records.

Photographs.

Meeting schedules.

Audio transcripts.

And one final document.

A list of names.

At the bottom was Jonathan Reed's signature.

I stared at it.

“He ordered the operation.”

Marcus nodded.

“But there's more.”

I opened the last folder.

A video appeared.

My father.

Again.

He looked directly at the camera.

“If you're seeing this, Elena failed to keep you away.”

My mother began crying.

My father continued.

“I need my daughter to know one thing.”

He paused.

“Dominic is your brother.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“You were never abandoned.”

The video continued.

“I hid you because the people around my father believed they could control Dominic through you.”

My father smiled sadly.

“I was wrong about one thing.”

He looked toward the camera.

“Family doesn't disappear just because you hide the name.”

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Dominic stood.

He looked at me.

“I don't know how to be your brother.”

I laughed through tears.

“I don't know how to be your sister.”

He smiled faintly.

“Then we'll learn.”

That should have been the end.

It wasn't.

Victor suddenly looked at the financial records.

“These transfers are still active.”

Marcus nodded.

“Jonathan hasn't stopped.”

“How?”

My mother looked toward the screen.

“Because he doesn't know we have this.”

A new message appeared.

Not from a phone.

From the computer.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Then another line appeared.

$480,000,000 MOVED TO ACCOUNT 17.

Dominic's face hardened.

“That's the remaining money.”

Victor looked at him.

“Where is Account 17?”

I studied the transaction.

The destination wasn't a bank.

It was a trust.

A family trust.

Registered under one name.

Mine.

My stomach dropped.

“Why would they move four hundred eighty million dollars into my name?”

Marcus looked at me.

“To make you the criminal.”

The room went silent.

Jonathan had just created evidence that could destroy me.

Then the screen displayed one final line.

TRANSFER BENEFICIARY: [MY NAME].

Dominic looked at me.

“They're setting you up.”

I stared at the screen.

Then I noticed something my father had taught me years ago.

Never trust the first translation.

I zoomed in.

The account number had one digit wrong.

I smiled.

“They made a mistake.”

Everyone looked at me.

“What mistake?” Dominic asked.

I pointed at the account.

“They think I'm their weapon.”

May you like

I looked at the photograph of my father.

“But my father taught me how to read the fifth name.”
