Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER KNEW HER OWN NAME

The room seemed to shrink.
Sophia stared at the paper.
Sophia Bennett.
Her name.
Except it wasn't.
Her entire life had been built around that name.
School records.
Birthdays.
Marriage.
Emma's birth certificate.
Everything.
“What does this mean?” she whispered.
Rafael looked at Margaret.
“Tell her.”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“You were born Elena Moretti's daughter.”
Sophia shook her head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“My mother was Margaret Hayes.”
“She raised you.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
Margaret stepped closer.
“I wasn't your birth mother.”
Sophia backed away.
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you.”
“You keep saying that.”
Her voice broke.
“But nobody ever asks what being protected cost me.”
Margaret began crying.
“I know.”
Sophia looked at Damiano.
He hadn't moved.
He was staring at her with an expression she couldn't read.
Rafael continued.
“Elena had two children.”
Damiano's eyes narrowed.
“You mean Isabella.”
“And Sophia.”
Isabella covered her mouth.
Sophia stared at her.
“We're sisters?”
Isabella nodded.
“I didn't know.”
Rafael looked at Damiano.
“Your father discovered the truth.”
Damiano's voice was low.
“My father knew Sophia was Elena's daughter.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he let Margaret raise her?”
“Because Elena was being hunted.”
Rafael turned toward the window.
“Marco arranged for Sophia to disappear under another name.”
“Why?”
“Because the people hunting Elena believed she had only one child.”
Sophia looked at Emma.
“And me?”
“You were the second secret.”
Damiano stepped closer.
“What does Emma have to do with this?”
Rafael sighed.
“Everything.”
Daniel suddenly appeared at the far end of the corridor.
He looked exhausted.
“Rafael.”
Rafael turned.
“You're late.”
Daniel looked at Sophia.
“I tried to stop this.”
Sophia stared.
“You knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
“You married me knowing?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel's eyes filled.
“Because I loved you before I understood who you were.”
She couldn't speak.
He continued.
“When I discovered your real identity, I tried to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because Rafael wanted me to.”
Rafael's expression hardened.
“I wanted you to keep her safe.”
“You threatened her.”
“I warned you.”
“You threatened our daughter.”
Rafael looked at Emma.
“I never wanted to hurt her.”
“Then why were people watching her?”
Rafael lowered his eyes.
“Because someone else wanted her.”
“Who?”
Rafael looked at Vincent.
Vincent closed his eyes.
“It's time.”
He removed his coat.
Inside was a small envelope.
He handed it to Damiano.
Damiano opened it.
A photograph fell out.
It showed Marco, Elena, Margaret, Vincent, and another man.
Thomas Carbone.
But behind them stood someone else.
Sophia recognized him.
Her late father's business partner.
A man she had met several times as a child.
“Charles Whitman.”
Damiano frowned.
“Who is he?”
Sophia whispered, “He helped my mother after my father died.”
Rafael nodded.
“He financed the entire operation.”
Damiano looked at Vincent.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You let me spend twenty years fighting families while he profited.”
Vincent's voice broke.
“I thought I was keeping the peace.”
“No.”
Damiano stepped closer.
“You were keeping the lie.”
Vincent accepted it.
“I was.”
Suddenly Isabella pulled the bracelet from her wrist.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
She handed it to Damiano.
“Elena gave me this.”
“When?”
“Before she disappeared.”
Damiano looked at the card.
“What is on it?”
“Your father's final recording.”
They found an old computer in the study.
The file opened.
Marco Moretti appeared on screen.
He looked tired.
Older.
Afraid.
“My name is Marco Moretti.”
Sophia stood behind Damiano.
Marco looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, I failed to protect my family.”
He paused.
“Rafael is not my enemy.”
Rafael closed his eyes.
Marco continued.
“The person who started the war is someone I trusted with every account, every shipment, every secret.”
Damiano leaned closer.
“Charles Whitman.”
Sophia's breath caught.
Marco continued.
“He used our families against one another because peace would destroy his business.”
The recording stopped.
Damiano looked at Rafael.
“Why didn't you show me this?”
“Because the original recording disappeared.”
Isabella shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed at the screen.
“That isn't the whole recording.”
Damiano looked.
A second file had appeared.
It had been hidden beneath the first.
He opened it.
Marco's face appeared again.
But this time, he was holding a photograph of a baby.
Emma.
Marco spoke slowly.
“There's one more thing.”
Sophia covered her mouth.
Marco continued.
“Daniel will protect her if I fail.”
The screen flickered.
Then his final words came.
“Emma is not valuable because of blood.”
Everyone stared.
“She is valuable because she is the only person who can prove what Charles did.”
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Then the mansion lights came back on.
Every locked door opened simultaneously.
Damiano's security chief ran into the room.
“Boss.”
“What?”
“The peace delegation has been released.”
“By whom?”
The guard looked terrified.
“Thomas Carbone.”
Damiano's eyes narrowed.
“And Charles Whitman is downstairs.”
Rafael whispered, “He came for Emma.”
A slow clap echoed from the hallway.
Charles appeared.
Elegant.
Smiling.
Holding a photograph of little Emma.
“I came for something much more important than the girl.”
He looked at Damiano.
“I came for the evidence.”
May you like
Then he raised his gun.
And pointed it at Sophia.
