Chapter 9 - SOMEONE PHOTOGRAPHED GRACE AND LILY OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL, AND ADRIAN HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN PROTECTING THEM AND TURNING THEIR LIVES INTO A PRISON

Adrian wanted twelve-man security immediately.
Grace said no.
He stared.
“A photograph.”
“I saw.”
“Threat.”
“Yes.”
“You and Lily were followed.”
“Probably.”
“And you are saying no?”
“I am saying no to twelve men.”
Adrian’s voice rose.
“Grace.”
She did not flinch.
“Immediate safety allows temporary action.”
“Remember?”
“Yes.”
“So tonight, yes, security increases.”
“Tomorrow we evaluate with police and independent threat team.”
“Not indefinite because you’re scared.”
He stopped.
She was right.
He hated timing.
Lily heard from hallway.
“Do I go school?”
Grace and Adrian looked.
Threat team later advised:
Keep routine with modified security.
School notified discreetly.
No public convoy.
Transport altered.
Digital privacy.
Police investigation.
Adrian wanted homeschool.
Lily said:
“Absolutely not.”
Grace supported.
Adrian lost 2-1.
He muttered marriage democracy flawed.
Photo metadata stripped.
Printed at local copy shop? It arrived by courier? Let's say envelope hand-delivered to gate by rideshare package under false sender.
Security footage traced vehicle contracted through app from downtown.
Account prepaid.
Driver uninvolved.
Pickup from locker.
No face.
Threat could be angry resident.
Family shareholder.
Victor associate.
Random crank.
Do not assume.
Then second message sent to Rebecca:
You are bankrupting family for people who will sue anyway.
This made corporate motive more likely.
Police and federal investigators included.
Victor denied.
His attorney provided travel.
He was in Florida but could arrange.
No proof.
Family shareholder emails heated.
One cousin, Julian Vale, wrote:
Adrian needs reminder he is steward, not owner.
Questioned.
He denied threat.
Another:
If Grace keeps influencing board, someone should show her what public life costs.
Sent by Victor’s daughter, Cassandra Vale, in private family chat.
Not threat? Ugly.
She said metaphor about press.
Still investigators.
Adrian saw.
“Cassandra.”
Grace said:
“No.”
“What?”
“You are about to call.”
“I can call cousin.”
“Not while police evaluating.”
He slammed hand on counter.
Grace stared.
He stopped.
“I’m sorry.”
“Good.”
Stress.
The board vote proceeded anyway.
Adrian considered postponing to protect family.
Grace said:
“If you change governance because threat, you teach threat works.”
He looked.
“I hate when you sound like me.”
“I learned worst parts.”
The reserve passed 8-3.
Asset sale authorized.
Family distributions suspended two years.
Shareholder revolt intensified.
Then threat investigation breakthrough came from Lily.
Not smell.
Observation.
She looked at photograph carefully.
Grace:
“Do not investigate.”
“I’m not.”
“I know this place.”
Background reflected red wall with partial mural.
Hospital parking? Actually photo taken across street near coffee shop.
Lily said:
“That’s not today.”
Grace frowned.
“What?”
“My shoes.”
Photo showed white sneakers.
Lily had worn black boots that day.
Adrian stared.
Grace checked.
Photo was from six weeks earlier, after a school science club visit to hospital.
Meaning stalker had been collecting images before reserve vote.
Threat planned earlier.
Security archived footage from date.
A man photographed from café terrace.
Face visible.
Private investigator.
Licensed:
Dean Hollis.
Hired by?
Vale Family Preservation Committee.
A private shareholder advocacy group controlled by Cassandra and two cousins.
They claimed investigation was to document “undisclosed family influence” on Adrian.
Hollis said he was instructed photograph Grace and Lily at public locations to show Adrian used company security resources for personal family.
No threat instruction.
Who sent threat photo later?
Hollis denied.
His client possessed images.
Committee server audit under subpoena showed Cassandra’s assistant downloaded photo two days before envelope.
Assistant, Nina Cole, admitted printing/send? She said Cassandra asked “send Adrian something that makes point personal.” She selected image and added line? Cassandra allegedly said no threats.
Nina wrote message.
Could be criminal harassment.
Cassandra denied intent fear.
Legal consequences developed.
Not mafia hit.
More pathetic.
Family power politics turned intimidation.
Adrian looked at Cassandra in civil mediation months later.
“You photographed my child.”
“She is not your legal child.”
Adrian’s face froze.
Grace put hand.
Lily was adopted? Source said later family-law could establish parent-child if Lily chose. By now at 13 perhaps Adrian had legally adopted with Lily's wishes while bio father absent? Wait biological father now resurfaces—if adoption occurred, his parental rights would have been terminated, making contact not custody. Source said "Later, when Lily was older and independently expressed desire for legal parent-child relationship, they handled...". Could be adoption before now. Then biological father rights terminated? If abandonment and notice maybe. That complicates current petition. We already portrayed Matthew seeking contact not custody; okay. Adrian is legal father. Cassandra saying not legal child is wrong if adoption. Let's avoid. Maybe she says “not Vale blood.” That's worse and clear.
“She isn’t Vale blood.”
Lily, not in mediation.
Adrian said:
“That is why she may have chance.”
Grace almost smiled.
Cassandra ultimately settled civil claims, resigned family committee, accepted protective no-contact boundaries. Prosecutors maybe misdemeanor harassment? Could be. Keep separate.
More important, the event severed remaining family trust unity.
Adrian moved to dissolve Vale Family Preservation Committee and restructure trust voting through independent fiduciary.
Some relatives sued.
Long.
But threats stopped.
Lily returned routine.
Matthew video calls continued every three months.
Adrian did not listen.
Grace sometimes after asks Lily.
No reporting details unless safety.
Then Mason appeared unexpectedly at Cliffside gate.
He had not contacted six months.
Security called Grace.
He carried envelope.
Adrian refused see.
Grace went gate.
“What?”
Mason looked older.
“I found something.”
“About?”
“Victor.”
“Give Rebecca.”
“I did.”
“Then?”
“It involves Adrian’s mother.”
Grace went still.
Adrian’s mother, Sophia Vale, had died when he was sixteen.
Officially car accident.
Mason said:
“She knew about South Quarry.”
Grace’s stomach tightened.
Another dead parent.
Another secret.
“No.”
Mason shook.
“Not what you think.”
“She tried to stop it.”
He handed copy of letter.
Sal, if you dump that material on family land, one day one of our children will have to pay for what you were too cheap to clean.
Signed:
Sophia.
Adrian’s mother.
The woman he barely spoke about.
Mason had found letter in Victor’s archived security box.
Why did Victor keep?
May you like
Leverage.
The contamination scandal was about to become deeply personal.
