THE MESSAGE MEANT FOR DANTE / Chapter 3 / 8

Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO SHOULDN'T HAVE SURVIVED

Dante didn't move.

Neither did I.

The footsteps came closer.

Then a woman stepped into the emergency light.

She was older than the girl in the photograph, but there was no mistaking her.

Same eyes.

Same narrow face.

Same small scar above the eyebrow.

The silver bracelet was still around her wrist.

Dante stared at her.

“Isabella.”

She smiled sadly.

“You finally remembered.”

He took one step forward.

Then stopped.

“Are you real?”

She laughed once.

“That's a cruel question from my little brother.”

His face collapsed for half a second.

Then the old Dante returned.

Controlled.

Suspicious.

“How?”

“I survived.”

“Who helped you?”

“Your enemy.”

That answer changed the room.

Bell raised his weapon slightly.

“Name.”

Isabella looked at him.

“You're the police officer.”

“Yes.”

“Then you're already too late.”

Dante moved closer.

“Tell me what happened.”

Isabella looked at me.

Then at the photograph.

“She found me.”

I swallowed.

“My mother?”

Isabella nodded.

“Your mother found me after I escaped St. Agnes.”

“How?”

“Because she was there the night they took me.”

I looked at Dante.

He was staring at his sister.

“Who took you?”

Isabella's expression hardened.

“Our father.”

Dante's eyes narrowed.

“Our father died.”

“No.”

The word was quiet.

“He disappeared.”

Bell stepped forward.

“That's a significant distinction.”

Isabella looked at him.

“Your father built the first version of the Moretti organization. Before Dante inherited anything, before there were rules, before people called him feared.”

She looked at her brother.

“He was ruthless.”

Dante looked away.

“What did he do to you?”

“He used me.”

“For what?”

“Leverage.”

She explained slowly.

Their father had discovered that a rival family was hiding financial records connected to Chicago shipping routes.

Isabella had been used as bait.

When she tried to escape, she was sent to St. Agnes under a false identity.

She eventually escaped.

Their father believed she had died.

But Isabella survived.

“My mother found you.”

“Yes.”

“And she protected you.”

“She tried.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“What happened?”

Isabella looked at me.

“She paid for it.”

The room became silent.

“My mother died when I was twelve.”

“I know.”

“You knew?”

“I was there.”

My knees weakened.

Dante caught my elbow.

Isabella continued.

“She didn't die because of an illness.”

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

“She was killed because she refused to tell them where I was.”

The words hit harder than any physical blow.

Dante's hand tightened around my arm.

“I thought your mother died from complications.”

“So did I.”

Isabella shook her head.

“She made sure you believed that.”

“Why?”

“Because if you knew the truth, they would have found you.”

I looked at Dante.

“Who?”

“The people who still wanted what our father had.”

Bell interrupted.

“Who are the Russos?”

Isabella's expression changed.

“They weren't the ones who started this.”

Dante frowned.

“Then why are they after Harper?”

“Because someone is using the Russo name.”

“Who?”

Isabella reached into her coat.

She removed an old wristwatch.

Black leather strap.

Scratched glass.

I remembered immediately.

“The watch.”

Dante stared.

“That belonged to Father.”

Isabella nodded.

“He gave it to the man who betrayed us.”

“Who?”

She looked directly at Dante.

“Victor Russo.”

Dante went still.

Bell's expression sharpened.

“Your right-hand man?”

“He wasn't always your enemy,” Isabella said. “He was our father's messenger.”

Dante shook his head.

“Victor was seventeen.”

“He was also terrified.”

“Why would he betray me?”

“Because he didn't.”

Silence.

Isabella stepped closer.

“Victor has been protecting you.”

Dante looked genuinely stunned.

“From whom?”

“From the person who actually controls the Russos.”

I felt the pieces shifting.

“So Victor knew you were alive?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't he tell Dante?”

“Because he made a promise.”

“What promise?”

Isabella looked at me.

“To keep Claire safe.”

My heart stopped.

“Claire?”

She nodded.

“The girl your mother was hiding.”

I shook my head.

“My name is Harper.”

Isabella smiled sadly.

“Your mother called you Harper because she wanted you to have a life that belonged only to you.”

She reached into her coat again.

This time she pulled out a small red ribbon.

I recognized it.

My mother had kept one identical to it inside an old jewelry box.

Isabella held it out.

“She gave this to me the night she died.”

I touched it.

A memory surfaced.

My mother sitting at the kitchen table.

Me as a child.

Her hands trembling as she tied a red ribbon around my wrist.

I had forgotten the reason.

Now I remembered her words.

If anyone ever asks about this, tell them it was just a ribbon.

I looked at Isabella.

“What was she afraid of?”

Isabella didn't answer.

Dante did.

“She was afraid of me.”

I turned.

“What?”

He looked devastated.

“She believed our father had taught me the same cruelty.”

“You were a teenager.”

“I was still a Moretti.”

Isabella shook her head.

“That isn't why she feared you.”

“Then why?”

She looked at me.

“Because she knew you were Dante's daughter.”

Everything stopped.

Dante stared at her.

“What?”

Isabella's voice softened.

“Your father had a daughter before he disappeared.”

Dante looked at me.

I couldn't breathe.

Isabella continued.

“She believed the child was yours.”

My heart hammered.

“But I never had a child.”

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

“That is what you were told.”

May you like

She looked at Dante.

“Your father took the baby.”
