Chapter 3 - THE BRACELET WITH THE SILVER KEY

The hospital corridor smelled like antiseptic and rain.
Alessandro walked beside me without speaking.
Victor stayed several steps behind us.
Two men I had never seen before followed at a distance.
I hated the feeling.
I hated being surrounded.
But I hated the alternative more.
Because somewhere behind the closed doors ahead, my mother was awake after fourteen months of barely speaking.
And someone had entered the hospital looking for her.
We reached the elevator.
Alessandro pressed the button.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
He looked at me.
“About Daniel Bell.”
His expression tightened.
“Later.”
“No.”
The elevator doors opened.
I stepped inside.
“You asked me questions all night. Now it's my turn.”
He followed.
“Daniel Bell worked for my father.”
“What kind of work?”
“Accounts.”
“Legal?”
“No.”
The word landed heavily.
“Money?”
“Yes.”
“Illegal money?”
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“And my mother?”
“She found something.”
“What?”
“A ledger.”
The elevator stopped.
A nurse stepped in.
She saw Alessandro.
Her eyes widened.
Then she immediately stepped out again.
I almost laughed.
“This is insane.”
Alessandro looked at me.
“What?”
“Everyone is afraid of you.”
“Most people have a reason.”
“And should I?”
He was silent.
The elevator doors opened.
We stepped out.
My mother's room was at the end of the corridor.
Two security men stood outside.
One nodded to Alessandro.
“The intruders?”
“Gone.”
“Gone?”
“They left before we reached this floor.”
I looked at Alessandro.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“No.”
He opened the door.
My mother was awake.
Pale.
Thin.
Her oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.
But her eyes were clear.
They found mine immediately.
“Claire.”
I rushed to her.
“Mom.”
She reached for my hand.
Her fingers were cold.
“You came.”
“Of course I came.”
Then she looked past me.
Her face changed.
She saw Alessandro.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she whispered—
“Roman.”
Alessandro froze.
“Mrs. Bennett.”
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
“You look like your father.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“You knew my father?”
“I knew him.”
“Did you know my sister?”
My mother's face collapsed.
I felt her fingers tighten around mine.
“Claire,” she whispered.
“What?”
“There isn't much time.”
Alessandro moved closer.
“Tell us what happened.”
My mother looked at him.
“Your sister wasn't taken by Daniel.”
Alessandro's breathing changed.
“Then who?”
My mother closed her eyes.
“Your father.”
Silence.
Alessandro stepped back.
“No.”
“He believed the girl was in danger.”
“He killed her?”
“No.”
My mother opened her eyes.
“He hid her.”
I stared at her.
“Where?”
She looked at me.
“With me.”
My heart stopped.
I couldn't breathe.
“You had his sister?”
“For years.”
“Then who is the girl in the photograph?”
My mother started crying.
“I couldn't save both of you.”
Alessandro's voice was barely controlled.
“Where is she?”
My mother looked at him.
“She was Claire's age when I lost her.”
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
My mother's eyes met mine.
“The girl in that photograph is your sister.”
Alessandro shook his head.
“No.”
My mother whispered—
“Not your sister.”
She looked at me.
“Your sister's daughter.”
The room went silent.
I felt dizzy.
Alessandro stared at me.
“My niece?”
My mother nodded.
“She was Daniel's daughter.”
I looked at the photograph again.
The little girl.
My age now.
A child who had vanished twenty-two years ago.
My mother had known her.
Protected her.
Then hidden the truth from me.
“Why?” I whispered.
“Because someone was hunting her.”
“Who?”
My mother looked toward the door.
Her expression changed.
“The same person who is hunting you.”
A noise came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Alessandro immediately moved between my mother and the door.
Victor appeared.
“Boss.”
Alessandro didn't look away.
“What?”
“The men who entered weren't looking for your wife.”
My stomach tightened.
“What were they looking for?”
Victor looked at me.
“Your mother.”
My mother closed her eyes.
“I knew they would come.”
Alessandro turned to her.
“Who sent them?”
She didn't answer.
Instead, she reached beneath her pillow.
Her hand came out holding a small velvet pouch.
She gave it to me.
Inside was the silver bracelet.
The one from the photograph.
My hands shook.
The heart charm was still there.
So was the tiny silver key.
But there was something else.
A folded strip of paper.
I opened it.
Four words.
THE WATCH KNOWS THE TRUTH.
I looked at my mother.
“What watch?”
She started crying again.
“Daniel's.”
Alessandro stared at the bracelet.
“Where is it?”
My mother looked at him.
“I gave it to Claire's father.”
“Daniel?”
She nodded.
“He promised he would hide it.”
I felt a strange chill.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you tell me he died?”
My mother looked away.
“Because I needed you to hate a dead man instead of searching for a living one.”
The words hit me like a slap.
I stepped back.
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you.”
“You lied to me.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of who?”
My mother looked at Alessandro.
Then at me.
“The man who killed Daniel.”
Alessandro's voice became quiet.
“Who was he?”
My mother opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, the lights in the room went out.
The machines beeped.
Victor drew his weapon.
Alessandro pulled me behind him.
A single emergency light flickered on.
And from the hallway came a man's voice.
“Claire.”
I knew that voice.
I had heard it for years.
Comforting me.
Listening to me.
Helping me through every terrible day.
My best friend Lily stepped into the doorway.
She was crying.
And behind her stood a man I had never seen before.
Lily looked at me.
“I'm sorry.”
The stranger held up a photograph.
It showed my mother, Daniel Bell—
and Alessandro's father.

On the back was one sentence.
THE MAN WHO KILLED DANIEL IS STILL ALIVE.
