Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK

Bradley opened the door.
Thomas stepped inside.
He looked tired.
Not dangerous.
Just exhausted.
He placed the photograph on the table.
“I'm not here to hurt anybody.”
Barbara stared at him.
“You shouldn't have come.”
Thomas laughed quietly.
“You said that twenty years ago.”
I looked between them.
“You know him.”
Barbara nodded.
“He found me six months ago.”
Thomas's expression hardened.
“She knew where I was.”
I looked at Barbara.
“You lied.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of him?”
“No.”
She looked at Thomas.
“Of what he would discover.”
Thomas turned to me.
“Your father didn't steal anything from my father.”
I frowned.
“Then why did you think he did?”
“Because that's what I was told.”
“By whom?”
He looked at Bradley.
My husband looked away.
Thomas continued.
“Your husband found me two years ago.”
My stomach tightened.
“You knew him?”
Thomas nodded.
“He came looking for Daniel.”
“Why?”
“To prove Daniel was dead.”
I looked at Bradley.
“Why?”
“Because your mother-in-law wanted the trust settled.”
Thomas shook his head.
“She wanted me to sign away my claim.”
Barbara said nothing.
I turned to her.
“Did you?”
“I tried.”
“Why?”
“Because I believed Daniel was dead.”
Thomas pulled a small envelope from his coat.
Inside was an old hospital bracelet.
The name read:
DANIEL REED.
Date: twenty-seven years ago.
Thomas placed it on the table.
“My father was admitted to a hospital under another name after the boating accident.”
I stared.
“Then he survived.”
“Yes.”
“Where is he now?”
Thomas looked at Barbara.
“She knows.”
Barbara's eyes filled.
“I haven't seen him in years.”
Thomas stepped closer.
“You know exactly where he is.”
Barbara shook her head.
“No.”
Thomas turned to me.
“He lives in a care facility two states away.”
I looked at Mr. Harris.
“Can we verify that?”
“Yes.”
He took out his phone.
A few minutes later, he nodded.
“There's a Daniel Reed matching the age.”
My breath caught.
“My uncle.”
Thomas nodded.
“But that's not the worst part.”
He opened another envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Bradley meeting a man outside a hospital.
I recognized the man.
It was my husband.
“What were you doing there?”
Bradley didn't answer.
Thomas did.
“He was trying to get Daniel to sign something.”
I turned toward Bradley.
“What?”
“A transfer agreement.”
“For the trust?”
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“Did he sign?”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel couldn't understand the document.”
Barbara looked down.
“He has dementia.”
The anger inside me faltered.
Suddenly, the whole story became more complicated.
Barbara hadn't been stealing money for herself.
She had been trying to settle an inheritance she believed had become impossible to manage.
Bradley had crossed lines.
But there had been fear underneath his actions.
That didn't excuse what he'd done.
Nothing could excuse the pool.
But it explained why everyone had been desperate.
Then Mr. Harris noticed something on the hospital photograph.
“What's that?”
A blue coat.
Hanging behind Bradley.
The same blue coat from the hidden key.
I touched my mouth.
“That's mine.”
Bradley looked at me.
“I put it there.”
“Why?”
“Because I found the key.”
My anger returned.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“And you hid it from me.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
He looked at me.
“That you'd leave.”
I stared at him.
“You were right.”
He flinched.
Then Thomas said something that changed everything.
“My father doesn't remember the trust.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“He remembers Maddie's father.”
Thomas pulled out a photograph.
My father was standing beside Daniel.
On the back was a sentence in his handwriting.
If Maddie ever needs you, tell her the truth.
I read it twice.
“What truth?”
Thomas looked at me.
“Daniel didn't disappear because he was ashamed.”
“Then why?”
“Because someone tried to kill him.”
Barbara closed her eyes.
Thomas continued.
“Your father helped him escape.”
I looked at the photograph.
“Who tried to kill him?”
Thomas turned toward Barbara.
“She never told me.”
Barbara began crying.
“I didn't know.”
Thomas shook his head.
“You knew enough.”
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He listened.
Then he looked at me.
“Your uncle just woke up.”
I froze.
“What did he say?”
May you like
Thomas swallowed.
“He asked for Maddie.”
