Plot twist

Chapter 9 - THE SECRET THAT BUILT THE THOMPSON FORTUNE

Richard Thompson’s father was named William.

He had served as outside accountant to Henry Carter and Samuel Hale during Hua Sheng’s earliest years.

According to the forensic records, Grandpa transferred payment for Samuel’s shares into an escrow account William controlled.

The funds disappeared.

Samuel never received them.

Henry received the shares.

William later certified that payment had been completed.

Samuel died believing Henry had cheated him.

Henry believed Samuel had taken the money.

William Thompson took the money himself.

That stolen payment became seed capital for the company that eventually became Thompson Development.

I stared at the report.

“My engagement was funded by money stolen before I was born.”

Charles sat across from me.

“In simplified terms.”

“Don’t simplify it.”

He nodded.

The implications were enormous.

Victor Hale’s rage had been directed at the wrong family.

But Richard knew the truth.

He had discovered his father’s records years earlier.

Instead of correcting the theft, he used Victor’s resentment.

He encouraged Hale to target us while hiding the Thompson role.

It was almost elegant.

Until greed ruined it.

Vanessa joined the meeting.

“Hughes Capital found matching historical deposits.”

“So it’s real.”

“Yes.”

I called Ryan.

He answered after several rings.

“Emily.”

“I need to see you.”

We met at a public garden.

No security inside earshot.

No romantic memories.

Neutral ground.

Ryan looked exhausted.

I handed him the report.

He read silently.

Then sat down.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

He kept reading.

“My family company…”

“Was partly built with stolen money.”

He covered his mouth.

I watched him absorb what his father had hidden.

“I didn’t know.”

“I believe you.”

His eyes lifted.

That surprised him.

“Why?”

“Because if you knew, you would have understood why your father was terrified of Hale discovering the truth.”

Ryan looked back at the papers.

“What happens now?”

“That depends on courts, creditors, restitution, and about a thousand lawyers.”

“I mean to my family.”

“I don’t know.”

He nodded.

Then laughed bitterly.

“My mother called your parents poor.”

“Yes.”

“My family’s wealth started with stolen money from yours.”

“Technically stolen from Samuel Hale during a transaction with mine.”

“Somehow that’s worse.”

“It is ironic.”

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

“You’ve said that.”

“I know.”

We sat in silence.

Then he handed me something.

My engagement ring.

I stared at it.

“I thought Margaret had it.”

“She gave it to me after the party.”

“I don’t want it.”

“I know.”

“Then why bring it?”

“Because it was yours after I gave it to you.”

I looked at him.

“You can sell it.”

“No.”

“Donate it.”

“No.”

“Throw it in a lake.”

“Tempting.”

He smiled sadly.

Then he became serious.

“Emily, I’m going to testify.”

“Against your father?”

“Yes.”

“That may destroy Thompson Development.”

“It deserves whatever happens.”

“Employees don’t.”

“I know. Vanessa is working on a restructuring that protects operating divisions.”

That was more maturity than the Ryan I had known.

Maybe losing everything had forced him to grow.

Or maybe the capacity had always existed and he had simply refused to use it.

“I hope you do the right thing.”

“I will.”

He stood.

Then hesitated.

“I meant what I said.”

“What?”

“I loved you before I knew.”

My chest hurt.

“Ryan.”

“I’m not asking you back.”

“Good.”

“I just need you to know that one part wasn’t a plan.”

I believed him.

That was almost worse.

“I know.”

His eyes filled.

He nodded.

Then walked away.

I kept the ring.

Not as a memory.

As evidence of something complicated.

That night, forensic investigators released enough information to law enforcement to establish William Thompson’s historical theft.

Richard’s cooperation became frantic.

He admitted everything.

Victor Hale had approached him six years earlier after discovering inconsistencies in Samuel’s records.

Richard convinced him Henry was responsible.

Together, they developed plans to pressure the Carter family.

Then Richard discovered my relationship with Ryan.

He turned it into an opportunity.

Hale wanted revenge.

Richard wanted access.

Margaret wanted status and survival.

Ryan wanted to save his family company.

Everybody wanted something.

I was the bridge they tried to walk across.

The next morning, Charles received another message from Hale.

This one was different.

No threat.

Only a question.

IS IT TRUE?

We knew what he meant.

Charles replied through investigators.

YES. WE HAVE THE RECORDS.

Three hours later, Hale called me directly.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Henry stole from my father.”

“He paid your father.”

“My father never received it.”

“Correct.”

Silence.

“Who took it?”

“William Thompson.”

I heard Hale breathe.

“No.”

“I’ll send you the independent report.”

“Fabricated.”

“Then verify it yourself.”

He became angry.

“You think I’ll believe a Carter?”

“No.”

That stopped him.

“I think you should believe evidence.”

I sent the documents through a secure channel.

He stayed silent for almost a minute.

Then said, “Richard knew?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Years.”

Another silence.

I imagined decades of hatred collapsing inside one man.

Finally, Hale whispered:

“I destroyed my life for a lie.”

I did not comfort him.

“You drugged my grandfather.”

“Yes.”

“You abducted Eleanor.”

“Yes.”

“You burned my mother’s shop.”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“You tried to destroy me.”

“Yes.”

“Richard’s lie explains your anger. It does not excuse your choices.”

He breathed shakily.

“I know.”

“Then surrender.”

“No.”

“Victor.”

“I need to finish something.”

The line disconnected.

I immediately called police.

But Hale had already moved.

Twenty minutes later, Richard Thompson’s secure detention transport was rerouted after a false emergency call.

The vehicle never reached the courthouse.

May you like

Richard was missing.

And Victor Hale had finally found the man who had lied to him.
