Plot twist

Chapter 3 - THE NAME BURIED IN THE TRUST

“The document says Florence.”

Nobody moved.

I stared at the screen.

Florence Sterling.

Not Flora.

Not a nickname.

Not a clerical mistake.

A different legal name.

Isaac slowly shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?”

Isaac didn't answer.

Noah did.

“Because Flora’s birth certificate says Flora.”

I turned toward my oldest brother.

“Yes.”

His expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You never saw the original.”

“What?”

“Your birth records.”

Noah looked at Marcus.

“Where did you find this?”

“Inside the old Sterling trust archive.”

My pulse quickened.

“That archive belonged to Dad.”

“Yes.”

My father had died twelve years earlier.

He had left us a modest collection of businesses, investments, and properties.

At least that was what I had always believed.

I remembered the night of his funeral.

Noah had told me, “Dad made sure you would never have to depend on a man.”

I had assumed he meant money.

Maybe he had meant something else.

Isaac stepped forward.

“Whatever that document says, it doesn't change what happened tonight.”

Julian looked at him.

“No. But it may explain why tonight happened.”

Clover suddenly spoke.

“You don't understand.”

Everyone looked at her.

She was crying now.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

“I didn't know what they were doing.”

Isaac stared at her.

“Clover.”

She flinched.

That was enough.

I knew.

She was afraid of him.

“Tell me,” I said.

She looked at me.

“I didn't know about the guarantee.”

“Then what did you know?”

She hesitated.

“I knew Isaac wanted access to something.”

“What?”

“The Sterling trust.”

Noah's jaw tightened.

Clover wiped her cheek.

“He told me the Vance family was going to lose everything if he couldn't get it.”

Arthur exploded.

“That is enough!”

Clover turned toward him.

“You told him the same thing.”

Arthur went silent.

The room shifted.

A family secret was beginning to crack open in front of everyone.

Arthur looked at his son.

“I told you to secure the financing.”

Isaac answered bitterly.

“You told me to save the company.”

“Not by committing fraud.”

Isaac laughed.

“You knew about the trust.”

Arthur's face hardened.

“I knew there was a trust.”

“You knew Flora was connected to it.”

“I didn't know how.”

I looked between them.

“What trust?”

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus placed another document on the table.

“According to the records, the Sterling trust was created twenty-seven years ago.”

He looked at me.

“You were listed as its primary beneficiary.”

I shook my head.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if your father expected something to happen.”

“What?”

Marcus tapped another page.

“The trust contains controlling interests in six companies.”

Leo leaned over.

“Six?”

Marcus nodded.

“Shipping. Commercial property. Construction materials. Technology infrastructure. Energy logistics. And private lending.”

Leo stared at the screen.

“That portfolio is worth hundreds of millions.”

Arthur Vance closed his eyes.

Isaac whispered,

“More than that.”

I turned toward him.

“How did you know?”

He didn't answer.

Clover did.

“He knew because he tried to buy it.”

Isaac turned on her.

“Shut up.”

She stepped back.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“But I'm done protecting you.”

I felt something inside me shift.

For eight months, I had thought Clover was simply the other woman.

A selfish woman who had chosen my husband.

Now I wasn't sure.

“Why were you with him?”

Clover looked at me.

“I wasn't supposed to be.”

Isaac laughed bitterly.

“You're really doing this now?”

“I met Isaac because Arthur hired me.”

The room went silent.

“Why?”

“To find out whether Flora knew about the trust.”

My heart sank.

“So the affair…”

Clover closed her eyes.

“It started as a lie.”

I stared at her.

“And then?”

She looked at Isaac.

“He convinced me he loved me.”

Isaac said nothing.

She continued.

“Then I realized he was using me too.”

Wendy whispered,

“Clover…”

Clover turned.

“You knew.”

Wendy's eyes filled.

“I suspected.”

“You knew enough to stop him.”

Wendy looked at me.

“I was afraid.”

The words sounded small.

But they were honest.

That didn't erase what she had allowed.

It explained it.

A little.

Noah stepped closer to me.

“We need to leave.”

I shook my head.

“Not yet.”

He studied me.

“Flora.”

“I've spent six years being told I don't belong here.”

I looked at Arthur.

“At least tonight, I want to know why.”

Arthur looked exhausted.

“You were never supposed to know.”

“Know what?”

He sat down.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“Your father and I were partners.”

Noah stiffened.

“What?”

Arthur looked at him.

“Before the Vance family built what we have now, your father helped finance our first major projects.”

Noah's expression became colder.

“Dad never mentioned you.”

“Because we had a falling-out.”

“Over what?”

Arthur looked at me.

“Your father believed the Vance family had taken money that wasn't ours.”

I felt my stomach turn.

“Did you?”

Arthur didn't answer.

That was an answer.

Marcus suddenly looked at his tablet.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

He scrolled rapidly.

“I found a transfer.”

“From where?” Leo asked.

“Sterling trust.”

“To Vance Construction.”

“When?”

Marcus looked at the date.

“Twenty-seven years ago.”

The same year the trust had been created.

“How much?”

Marcus swallowed.

“Twenty-two million dollars.”

Arthur whispered,

“Your father loaned us the money.”

Noah stepped forward.

“And you never repaid it.”

Arthur looked down.

“We couldn't.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You didn't just fail to repay it.”

He opened another document.

“You transferred ownership of the debt.”

“To whom?”

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then at me.

“To Flora.”

I couldn't breathe.

Isaac suddenly understood.

“That’s why the guarantee was needed.”

Marcus nodded.

“The Vance family has been borrowing against a debt that legally belongs to Flora.”

Noah's eyes hardened.

“Meaning?”

Marcus answered.

“Meaning if Vance Construction collapses, Flora could become liable for every dollar they borrowed against that trust.”

Arthur stood.

“That wasn't supposed to happen.”

“Then what was supposed to happen?”

Arthur looked at me.

“You were supposed to inherit the debt.”

My mouth went dry.

Isaac took a step toward me.

“Flora, listen.”

I backed away.

“You knew.”

He stopped.

“I knew about the trust.”

“You knew about the debt.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my name was being used.”

His silence answered.

I turned toward Noah.

“Get me out of here.”

Noah immediately nodded.

We began walking.

Then Marcus called out.

“Flora.”

I turned.

He was holding one final page.

“There’s a second beneficiary.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

Marcus looked at the name.

His face became unreadable.

“Someone named Florence Sterling.”

I stared at him.

“That’s me.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“It isn’t.”

Then he turned the document around.

The photograph attached to it was old.

A young woman.

Dark hair.

My mother's eyes.

May you like

And beneath the photograph was a name I had never seen before.

FLORENCE ELIZABETH STERLING.
