THE POISONED VOW / Chapter 2 / 7

Chapter 3 - THE TROJAN HORSE

The wedding was four weeks away, and the pressure campaign escalated exactly as I anticipated. Gavin brought up the prenuptial agreement over dinner at a high-end steakhouse. He slid a sleek leather folder across the table, his expression a mask of apologetic concern.

“My father’s lawyers drafted this, Alyssa. It’s completely standard,” he said, reaching out to cover my hand with his. “It basically just merges our assets so we can manage them together under my family’s umbrella. It protects you from the stress of corporate taxes so you can focus on us. On our future.”

I opened the folder. The legal jargon was dense, but my trained eyes caught the buried clauses immediately. It wasn’t a merger; it was a total surrender. Upon signing, full executive control of my agency would transfer to an entity managed by Elijah.

“It looks very comprehensive,” I said, feigning a slight overwhelm. “I’ll have Marcus look it over, of course. But honestly, Gavin, I’ve been thinking… I want to do more than just merge.”

Gavin blinked, caught off guard. “More?”

“If we’re going to be a true family, I want to invest in your father’s next venture. I have a substantial amount of liquid capital in a holding company, about fifteen million.” It was a lie, backed by a shell corporation Marcus and I had meticulously constructed with phantom assets. “I want to put it in a joint trust. But the trust requires a co-signer who can pledge physical collateral. Your family’s estate, perhaps?”

Greed flashed in Gavin’s eyes, so bright and sudden it was almost blinding. He tried to suppress his smirk. “I… I think my father would be incredibly touched by that, Alyssa. I’ll talk to him tonight.”

Meanwhile, my burner phone buzzed late at night. It was Brianna. The messages were short, terrifying glimpses into her hell. They locked me in the basement tonight. Naomi used the cane again. They said Damian gets out in two years and I have to be ‘disciplined’ by then. And, most importantly, she sent audio files. Crystal-clear recordings of Naomi screaming obscenities, the sickening sound of physical strikes, and Elijah discussing the impending collapse of his fraud scheme.

I spent my evenings sitting in the dark of my apartment, listening to the audio files, letting the rage harden into something cold and unbreakable. I was funding my own private investigation, hiring former intelligence officers to track the Herndons’ offshore movements. They discovered that Elijah was planning to flee to a non-extradition country the moment my company’s assets were secured. They were going to drain me dry, leave me with the legal fallout of their Ponzi scheme, and vanish.

The next day, Marcus and I finalized the counter-documents. On the surface, they looked exactly like what Gavin wanted. But buried in the sub-clauses, masked by labyrinthine legal phrasing, was a poison pill. By signing, Gavin and Elijah would unknowingly transfer the deed to the Buckhead estate, all remaining liquid assets, and full liability for the holding company’s debts directly into a trust solely controlled by me.

I was going to legally strip them to the bone.

When I met Naomi for a bridal fitting that weekend, she sipped champagne and looked at me critically in the mirror. “You’ll make a fine wife, Alyssa. Just remember, a woman’s true power is in her submission to her family’s legacy.”

I looked at her reflection in the mirror, adjusting the veil over my face. “Oh, Naomi,” I smiled, a genuine, terrifying smile she couldn’t quite decipher. “You have no idea how much power I have.”
