Part 3: The Broken Trust
"This is an outrage!" Vanessa’s lawyer yelled, trying to salvage the disaster. "The testimony of a confused five-year-old child cannot be used to alter a pre-negotiated asset division!"
"This court will determine what is admissible, counselor," Judge Thornton said, her eyes flashing with anger. "Mr. Cross, did you bring a minor child to a hidden estate while your wife was hospitalized, and did you actively threaten that child into silence?"
Julian couldn't answer. The relaxed, wealthy executive who had walked into the courtroom ready to strip me of everything was completely gone.
"Your Honor," my attorney intervened again, pulling out a secondary document. "We have just received an emergency forensic update from the Cross Development Group's payroll database. It appears Mr. Cross has been hiding more than just his mistress."
The judge gestured for him to proceed.
"Over the last ninety days, Julian Cross has transferred three major commercial deeds in South Boston into a shell corporation registered under Vanessa Vance’s maiden name," my lawyer revealed. "He valued the assets at zero dollars, claiming they were bad debts. In reality, the zoning permits for those properties were approved yesterday morning. Their actual market value is twelve million dollars."
A collective gasp went through the gallery.
Julian had spent the entire marriage telling me his business was failing, using that lie to convince me to sign away my rights to the company so I wouldn't be burdened by his "debts."
I looked at the man I had loved for seven years. He had systematically planned to leave me and our unborn baby with absolutely nothing, using his own daughter as a pawn to hide his secret life.

Vanessa stood up, her expensive cream blazer wrinkled as she clutched her designer purse. "Julian, you said she wouldn't find out! You said the lawyers handled the digital trail!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Julian yelled, finally snapping as he buried his face in his hands.
