Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE BAKERY BURNED

Gavin called the police immediately.

But before he could finish explaining everything, smoke appeared outside the window.

Lucy ran toward the door.

“The bakery.”

Gavin turned.

“What?”

“The bakery is on fire.”

They rushed outside.

The sky above Honey Crust was glowing orange.

Fire trucks were already approaching.

Gavin's chest tightened.

His father's bakery.

His livelihood.

The place where he had spent seven years rebuilding everything.

He drove toward it.

The building was surrounded by firefighters.

Flames were pouring from the back storage room.

Gavin stopped behind the barricade.

“Is anyone inside?”

A firefighter shook his head.

“No employees.”

Gavin exhaled.

Then he noticed something.

The back door was open.

He knew immediately.

Someone had gone inside before the fire started.

The firefighter said, “We found something.”

He handed Gavin a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was the photograph from the storage locker.

Nathan Cole.

Gavin stared at it.

“He wanted us to find this.”

Lucy nodded.

“He wants you scared.”

Gavin looked at the burning bakery.

“He wants me to destroy the ledger.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

They looked at him.

“He wants the original.”

Gavin frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel pointed toward the fire.

“If he believed the ledger was the only copy, he would have taken it.”

Gavin's eyes widened.

“You think there are copies?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your father was an accountant before he owned the bakery.”

Gavin remembered.

His father had always kept records.

Boxes and boxes of them.

“Where?”

Daniel thought.

“Maybe the bakery's old bookkeeping system.”

Gavin stared at the flames.

Then he remembered something.

A wall safe.

His father had installed one behind the old oven.

Nobody knew about it.

Gavin ran toward the firefighters.

He was stopped immediately.

“You can't go inside.”

“There's something in there.”

“It isn't safe.”

“My father left evidence.”

The firefighter looked at the burning building.

“You're not going inside.”

Gavin stared at the flames.

Then the roof groaned.

He stepped back.

He knew the firefighter was right.

They waited.

Two hours later, the fire was under control.

Most of Honey Crust was destroyed.

The storage room was gone.

The kitchen was damaged.

The front windows were shattered.

But the wall behind the old oven remained standing.

Gavin entered with firefighters.

He found the safe.

It was hot but intact.

Inside were old documents.

Bank records.

Invoices.

Photographs.

And one envelope.

Gavin opened it.

His father's handwriting was on the front.

FOR GAVIN — ONLY IF ELENA EVER COMES BACK.

Gavin's hands trembled.

Inside was a letter.

His father explained everything.

Five years earlier, he had discovered the money laundering operation.

Nathan Cole was responsible.

Marcus worked under him.

Elena had discovered the scheme.

She was pregnant with Nathan's child.

Nathan promised to protect her.

But when she threatened to expose him, Nathan staged his own death.

He then manipulated Marcus into believing Elena had betrayed him.

Marcus became obsessed with controlling Elena.

Nathan watched from a distance.

The entire situation had been engineered.

Gavin reached the final paragraph.

His father had written:

IF MIA IS EVER IN DANGER, TELL HER SHE WAS LOVED BEFORE SHE WAS EVEN BORN.

Gavin couldn't stop the tears.

Then another sentence caught his attention.

THE ORIGINAL ACCOUNTING RECORDS ARE NOT IN THIS SAFE.

Gavin turned the page.

YOUR MOTHER KEPT THEM.

Gavin froze.

His mother had died four years earlier.

But she had owned a small antique shop.

Gavin knew exactly where.

He called Lucy.

“We have to go.”

They drove to the old shop.

It had been closed for years.

The building was dusty and dark.

Gavin unlocked the door.

Behind the counter was an old cabinet.

His mother had always called it the family cabinet.

Inside was a hidden compartment.

Gavin opened it.

There was another ledger.

This one was older.

It contained bank account numbers.

Names.

Dates.

And transfers totaling more than eight million dollars.

But there was something else.

A letter from Nathan.

Gavin read it.

Nathan admitted everything.

He had planned to use Elena as a scapegoat.

He had arranged for Marcus to become the public face of the operation.

Then he planned to disappear with the money.

But Elena had become pregnant.

That changed the plan.

Nathan wanted the child.

Not because he loved her.

Because Mia's existence could eventually expose him.

Gavin looked at Lucy.

“He doesn't want Mia dead.”

Lucy shook her head.

“He wants her as leverage.”

Gavin nodded.

Then the phone rang.

Nathan.

Gavin answered.

“Where is my granddaughter?”

Nathan laughed softly.

“Your granddaughter?”

Gavin froze.

Nathan continued.

“You're beginning to understand.”

“Where is Mia?”

“Bring me the ledger.”

“I have it.”

“Then you have until midnight.”

“Where?”

“Your bakery.”

Gavin looked at the destroyed building.

“You burned it.”

“I needed to clean up the evidence.”

“What do you want?”

Nathan paused.

“Everything your father kept.”

Gavin said nothing.

“And Gavin?”

“What?”

“If you bring the police, Mia dies.”

The line ended.

Gavin looked at Lucy.

Then at Rosalia.

Then at Daniel.

Rosalia was crying silently.

Gavin spoke.

“We're going to the bakery.”

Lucy grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“I have to.”

“You'll be walking into a trap.”

“I know.”

“Then don't go alone.”

Gavin looked at her.

“I won't.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Neither will I.”

Rosalia wiped her tears.

“I'm coming.”

Gavin shook his head.

“No.”

Rosalia stared at him.

“My daughter is there.”

“And your granddaughter.”

“Yes.”

She lifted her chin.

“So I'm coming.”

Gavin finally nodded.

At 11:42 p.m., they arrived at Honey Crust.

The building was dark.

The sign hung crooked above the entrance.

Gavin carried the ledger.

Daniel carried a small recording device.

Lucy stayed in the car with the police waiting several blocks away.

Rosalia stood beside Gavin.

The door opened by itself.

Inside, the bakery smelled like smoke and burned wood.

Then they heard a child's voice.

“Grandma?”

Rosalia froze.

“Mia?”

A light turned on.

Mia stood in the center of the ruined bakery.

Her hands were tied loosely with a cloth.

Behind her stood Nathan Cole.

The silver eagle ring gleamed beneath the light.

And beside him stood Marcus.

Nathan smiled.

“You brought the ledger.”

Gavin held it up.

“Let the child go.”

Nathan shook his head.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

Nathan looked at Rosalia.

“The suitcase was never the problem.”

He smiled.

“The problem was that she kept taking evidence out of this bakery without knowing what she was carrying.”

Rosalia stared at him.

Nathan continued.

“For three years, she walked past the truth every night.”

Then Marcus stepped forward.

And Gavin finally realized that the suitcase had been used for something much more dangerous than carrying food.

It had been carrying pieces of a secret that could destroy them all.
