Chapter 8 - I WALKED INTO COURT INSTEAD OF SENDING MEN TO GABRIEL ROMANO

Gabriel’s petition lasted forty-seven hours.
That was enough to scare lenders.
Enough to generate headlines.
Enough to make partners call.
Enough to remind me that modern power does not always arrive with guns.
Sometimes it arrives as a PDF stamped FILED.
Rebecca assembled lawyers.
Corporate counsel.
Forensic accountants.
Independent directors.
My mother provided handwriting samples.
Luca, from custody, signed a sworn statement denying he authorized the filing.
For the first time, he helped without bargaining.
“I did enough.”
He told his attorney.
“No more.”
The judge granted no control transfer.
Only a temporary preservation order preventing unusual asset movement by any side.
That actually helped us.
Gabriel could not shift funds either.
Then he made a mistake.
He appeared remotely through counsel.
Not personally.
But the video connection originated from New York.
Ortiz’s team traced legal service metadata lawfully.
Westchester.
Private estate.
Owned through Romano interests.
Police moved.
Gabriel was gone before arrival.
Again.
Vincent too.
But they found records.
Printers.
Old Moretti system maps.
Fake signatures.
Surveillance photographs.
Emma.
Sophia.
Me.
Luca.
My mother.
Marco.
Everyone.
Then one wall.
A timeline.
My wedding circled in red.
Under it:
PHASE ONE — LEGAL ACCESS
Two days after:
PHASE TWO — A.M. CREDIBILITY EVENT
What event?
Maybe poison?
Not yet.
Then:
PHASE THREE — MARKET LIQUIDATION
The financial attack.
Under that:
PHASE FOUR — INTERNAL SECURITY REALIGNMENT
Marco.
He was meant to become replacement authority.
Not because he agreed.
Because Gabriel believed the organization would choose the security chief once the family collapsed.
Then:
PHASE FIVE — ROMANO ACQUISITION
There.
Full endgame.
Not Luca.
Not Isabella.
Not Marco.
Gabriel.
Everyone else was a bridge.
My bride.
My brother.
My mother’s signature.
My security chief’s credibility.
Sophia’s fear.
Daniel’s death.
All pathways toward a forced acquisition of the Moretti empire.
Detective Ortiz asked:
“Why not just kill you?”
“Too unstable.”
“What?”
“For markets.”
She understood.
Dead crime boss creates succession chaos.
But living, discredited boss creates discounted assets and court-supervised restructuring.
Gabriel wanted predictable collapse.
Modern criminal strategy.
Then forensic analysts found the hidden communication archive.
Messages between Gabriel and Vincent.
One made my blood cold.
ALESSANDRO MUST BE PROVOKED INTO PUBLIC VIOLENCE AFTER CEREMONY DISRUPTION.
There.
They expected me to attack Luca.
Or Isabella.
Maybe kill someone.
Then media.
Court.
Instability.
I had not.
Because Emma’s accusation came early.
Because Marco stopped the ceremony.
Because Sophia told the truth.
Because I chose police.
Gabriel’s plan had been built around the old Alessandro.
Every time I refused to become him, another part failed.
I sat alone with that realization.
My worst habits had been so predictable an enemy wrote them into a strategy document.
That is humiliation.
Useful humiliation.
Then Ortiz found another message.
Vincent:
IF A. DOESN’T BREAK, USE CHILD.
My chest tightened.
Which child?
Emma?
Matteo?
Both?
Sophia moved into the room.
She saw my face.
“What?”
I showed her.
She went pale.
“I want Emma out of New York.”
“Okay.”
She stared.
“You’re not arguing?”
“No.”
“Where?”
“Your choice.”
“My sister’s home in Connecticut.”
“Security?”
“Police coordination.”
“One female officer I know.”
“Done.”
“Matteo?”
May you like
I thought.
If Gabriel might use child, my son too.
