Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO KNEW HER NAME

The next morning, Isabella learned something that changed everything.

The man in the photograph was not merely David's father's former business partner.

His name was Victor Lang.

For nearly fifteen years, Victor had served as an adviser to several Harrison family businesses.

He had also once worked for Bennett Meridian.

Michael recognized him immediately.

“Victor was my father's financial adviser.”

Claire looked at the documents.

“Then he had access to the old trust structure.”

Michael nodded.

“He did.”

“Why did he leave?”

Michael's jaw tightened.

“He was fired.”

“Why?”

“He moved money without authorization.”

David stared at the documents.

“And now he's working with my mother.”

Claire nodded.

“Apparently.”

Isabella looked at the clock.

The emergency hearing was scheduled for nine.

They had less than an hour.

“Can we stop the transfer?”

Claire gathered the documents.

“If the judge accepts the evidence, yes.”

“What if he doesn't?”

“Then the property may be transferred before we can stop it.”

Michael looked at Isabella.

“We're going to stop it.”

They arrived at the courthouse minutes before the hearing.

Margaret was already there.

She stood beside Victor.

He wore an expensive navy suit.

When he saw Isabella, he smiled.

Not nervously.

Confidently.

“You finally discovered the truth.”

Isabella stopped.

“What truth?”

“That your family isn't as untouchable as you believed.”

Victor looked at Michael.

“You should have retired years ago.”

Michael's expression remained calm.

“You should have gone to prison years ago.”

Victor smiled.

“Still arrogant.”

“No.”

Michael looked at him.

“Just informed.”

Inside the courtroom, the attorneys presented their evidence.

Victor claimed Isabella had authorized the transfer.

Claire presented the forensic analysis.

The judge asked for the original document.

Victor produced it.

Isabella stared at it.

The signature looked perfect.

Too perfect.

Claire pointed to the page.

“Your Honor, we request independent forensic examination.”

Victor objected.

“The transaction is legitimate.”

Claire replied,

“The signature was digitally reproduced.”

Victor's lawyer argued otherwise.

The judge looked at Isabella.

“Ms. Bennett, did you authorize this transfer?”

“No.”

“Did you sign this document?”

“No.”

“Were you aware of Harrison Capital Partners?”

“No.”

The judge looked at Victor.

“Who witnessed the signature?”

Victor named a notary.

Claire immediately pulled another document from her folder.

“The notary was paid by a Harrison-controlled account.”

Victor's attorney objected.

But the judge allowed the evidence.

The hearing lasted nearly two hours.

Finally, the judge issued a temporary injunction.

The transfer was frozen.

Isabella exhaled.

David squeezed her hand.

But Claire wasn't smiling.

“What?”

Claire lowered her voice.

“This is only temporary.”

“Why?”

“Because we still need to prove who ordered the forgery.”

They returned to the hotel.

Margaret was waiting.

She stood in the lobby surrounded by two lawyers.

“You think you've won.”

Isabella looked at her.

“No.”

Margaret smiled.

“Good.”

“Because we're not finished.”

Margaret leaned closer.

“You should ask your father why he never told you about the trust.”

Isabella frowned.

“What trust?”

Margaret smiled.

“The one your grandfather created.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Margaret.”

She looked at him.

“You always thought you were protecting Isabella.”

Michael's expression hardened.

“But you never told her that her inheritance was conditional.”

Isabella turned toward her father.

“Conditional?”

Michael sighed.

“Your grandfather placed restrictions on the controlling shares.”

“What kind?”

“You cannot sell or transfer them without approval from an independent trustee.”

“Who is the trustee?”

Michael hesitated.

Margaret smiled.

“Victor.”

Isabella stared.

Claire immediately shook her head.

“That cannot be correct.”

Margaret laughed.

“Oh, it is.”

She pulled a document from her purse.

“It was signed twenty years ago.”

Michael took it.

His face changed.

“What?”

Isabella stepped closer.

“What is it?”

Michael looked at her.

“An appointment of trustee.”

“And?”

“Victor was named as alternate trustee.”

Claire took the document.

She examined it.

“This document is real.”

Isabella felt the room tilt.

“Then why did nobody tell me?”

Michael looked devastated.

“Because I never thought he would use it against you.”

Margaret smiled.

“That's where you were wrong.”

Then she leaned toward Isabella.

“You've spent your whole life believing your father protected you.”

She paused.

“He didn't.”

Isabella's voice became cold.

“What do you want?”

Margaret answered immediately.

“The trust.”

“And if I refuse?”

Margaret smiled.

“Then David loses everything.”

David stepped forward.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret looked at her son.

“Your father's debts were never forgiven.”

David went still.

Margaret continued.

“They were secured against Harrison assets.”

David stared at her.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

She looked at Isabella.

“Your father-in-law borrowed eighteen million dollars.”

Margaret's smile disappeared.

“And your husband inherited the liability.”

David's face drained of color.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was fixing it.”

“With Isabella's trust?”

“Yes.”

Isabella finally understood.

Margaret wasn't trying to steal the property simply because she wanted money.

She was trying to use Isabella's inheritance to erase Harrison debts.

And if she couldn't?

David would be financially destroyed.

Margaret looked at Isabella one last time.

“You can save your marriage.”

May you like

Then she walked away.

“You just have to sign.”
