Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH ADRIAN NEVER KNEW

The emergency lights came on seconds later.
Red.
Dim.
Unsteady.
Nia gripped Adrian's arm.
Marcus immediately moved between them and the hallway.
“Stay here.”
Adrian looked toward the darkness.
“No.”
He took Nia's hand.
“We stay together.”
A security alarm sounded downstairs.
Then another.
The hospital staff began moving patients into secured areas.
No mysterious intruder appeared.
No dramatic attack came.
Instead, the hospital's internal system began displaying errors.
Patient records vanished from screens.
Medication histories changed.
Appointment logs disappeared.
Someone was erasing evidence.
Dr. Grant ran toward them.
“They're inside the system.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Can you stop it?”
“I can isolate the maternity records.”
“Do it.”
Nia watched Dr. Grant rush away.
She felt strangely calm.
The fear had changed.
For days, she had felt like something was happening around her.
Now she understood.
Something was happening because of her.
Because of the baby.
And because someone believed she could be controlled.
She looked at Adrian.
“I want the truth.”
“You'll have it.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I want all of it.”
He understood.
“No more secrets.”
They returned to the records room.
Dr. Grant accessed the original files.
One by one, the altered entries appeared.
Nia's first pregnancy.
Her second.
Her current pregnancy.
The changes all came from the same terminal.
Elliot's office.
But then Dr. Grant found something else.
A second authorization.
Margaret Cole.
Nia stared at the screen.
“Your mother.”
Adrian looked confused.
“She was dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then how could she authorize anything?”
Dr. Grant opened the historical record.
A signature had been copied from an old authorization form.
Someone had been using Margaret's identity.
Adrian understood.
“Elliot.”
Dr. Grant nodded.
“He used her name to make the records look legitimate.”
Nia felt tears fill her eyes.
“So my miscarriages were planned.”
Dr. Grant shook her head.
“I can't prove the entire chain yet.”
“Then what can you prove?”
“The prescriptions were altered.”
“And Elliot signed them.”
“Yes.”
Adrian's hands clenched.
But Nia touched his arm.
“Don't.”
He looked at her.
“Don't become your father.”
The words stopped him.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he nodded.
“You're right.”
It was the first time Nia saw him choose restraint when anger would have been easier.
They went to Elliot's office.
It had already been emptied.
Files were gone.
Computers were wiped.
But one drawer remained locked.
Marcus forced it open.
Inside was a small wooden box.
Nia recognized the design.
It was the kind of box her father used to keep old photographs in.
She opened it.
Inside was a watch.
An old silver watch with a cracked crystal.
She knew it immediately.
It had belonged to her father.
“My father.”
Adrian stared at it.
“How did Elliot get this?”
Nia turned it over.
An engraving was scratched into the back.
D.B. — A promise kept.
Her father had worn that watch for years.
She had believed it was buried with him.
Then she remembered something.
After his death, her mother had said the watch was missing.
Nia looked at Adrian.
“Your father had it.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
She handed it to him.
He examined it.
Then his face changed.
“I've seen this before.”
“Where?”
“On a photograph from the night my father was attacked.”
Nia froze.
“What attack?”
Adrian pulled an old photograph from the box.
Two men stood outside a hotel.
His father.
Daniel Brooks.
The silver watch was visible on Daniel's wrist.
Behind them stood Walter Crane.
And farther away stood Elliot.
Nia whispered,
“My father wasn't working for your family.”
“No.”
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“He was protecting my mother.”
That changed everything.
Margaret had not simply discovered the network.
She had been trying to escape it.
Daniel Brooks had helped her.
And Elliot had been there.
Nia understood why Elliot had feared her.
Her father had known what happened.
He had left evidence.
And the watch had survived.
Then the office door opened.
Elliot stood there.
No weapon.
No disguise.
No panic.
He looked tired.
“You finally found it.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You tried to kill my children.”
Elliot shook his head.
“I never wanted them dead.”
“You altered the records.”
“Yes.”
“You changed the prescriptions.”
“Yes.”
Nia's voice was quiet.
“Why?”
Elliot looked at her.
“Because your father knew the truth.”
“What truth?”
“Your father wasn't killed because he knew too much.”
Nia's heart stopped.
“Then why did he die?”
Elliot looked at the silver watch.
“Because he refused to forget.”
Adrian stared at him.
“What did my father do?”
Elliot swallowed.
“Your father ordered Walter to silence Daniel.”
Nia felt the room tilt.
Adrian looked stunned.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel had evidence that Margaret was trying to expose the family.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“My mother knew.”
“She knew everything.”
“And you?”
Elliot looked down.
“I helped her.”
Nia stared.
“You helped her?”
“Yes.”
“Then why hurt me?”
“Because after Margaret died, I realized the truth had become worthless without power.”
His voice cracked.
“I chose the family business.”
Adrian looked at him with disgust.
“You destroyed innocent people for money.”
Elliot shook his head.
“For control.”
That was worse.
Then Marcus entered.
“Sir.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“We found Walter.”
Everyone froze.
“Where?”
Marcus looked at Nia.
“He's been living under another name.”
“Where?”
Marcus answered.
“In a care facility outside Boston.”
Adrian took a breath.
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
Nia looked at the watch.
May you like
The last witness was still alive.
And he had been waiting years to tell the truth.
