Chapter 8 - WHAT MARGARET WAS PROTECTINGThe room went silent.
Lily looked at Ethan as though he had struck her.
“I don't have a brother.”
Ethan lowered his head.
“You did.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“What happened to him?”
“I don't know.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“I know.”
Mason stepped between them.
“Start from the beginning.”
Ethan breathed slowly.
“Sarah had two children.”
Lily stared.
“A son named Daniel.”
“How old?”
“Four.”
Lily covered her mouth.
“My mother never told me.”
“She thought she was protecting you.”
“From what?”
“From Margaret.”
Ethan explained that Daniel had been born with a serious heart condition.
The Morgan family had paid for his treatment.
But Margaret used the payments to control Sarah.
When Sarah tried to expose the trust, Margaret threatened to stop paying.
Sarah refused to surrender.
Richard secretly continued the treatment.
Then Richard died.
Margaret cut off the money.
Sarah hid Daniel with a family friend.
But before she could expose Margaret, she disappeared.
“Where is Daniel now?” Lily asked.
“I don't know.”
“You said you didn't know.”
“I didn't.”
Mason looked at him.
“Until when?”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Until six months ago.”
Everyone froze.
“You found him.”
Ethan nodded.
“Alive.”
Lily's knees nearly gave way.
I reached for her hand.
“Where?”
Ethan looked toward Mason.
“He lives in Maine.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Daniel doesn't know who we are.”
“Why?”
“He was adopted.”
Mason's expression hardened.
“Legally?”
“Yes.”
“By whom?”
Ethan hesitated.
“Thomas Vale.”
I stared.
“The man in the photograph?”
“Yes.”
Everything suddenly connected.
Thomas hadn't been helping Margaret.
He had been protecting Daniel.
He had taken the boy away from the family before Margaret could reach him.
“And the money?”
Ethan nodded.
“Richard transferred part of the trust to Thomas so Daniel could be protected.”
Mason looked at the notebook.
“That's Project Willow.”
“Yes.”
The millions weren't simply stolen.
They were moved into a protective network.
But Margaret had spent eleven years trying to reclaim the money because she believed it proved her control over the family.
“And Sarah?” I asked.
Ethan looked down.
“She discovered Daniel was safe.”
“Then why did she return?”
“To get him back.”
“And Margaret stopped her.”
“Yes.”
I felt something cold settle inside me.
“Did Margaret kill Sarah?”
Ethan didn't answer.
Mason did.
“We have evidence suggesting she arranged the circumstances of Sarah's death.”
“Suggesting?”
“We need the original records.”
“The records from the wall.”
“Yes.”
I looked at the photograph.
“Where are they?”
Ethan suddenly stood.
“I know.”
Mason grabbed his arm.
“Where?”
“The old nursery.”
Everyone stared.
“There's a room behind the library.”
I frowned.
“Not a secret basement?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“A room the family stopped using after Richard died.”
We entered it together.
Dust covered everything.
A rocking horse.
A wooden crib.
An old coat rack.
And a small framed photograph of Sarah holding Lily.
On the wall was a child's height chart.
One name had been scratched out.
Daniel.
Mason searched the room.
Then Lily noticed something.
“Wait.”
She pointed to the rocking horse.
“That's mine.”
She sat beside it.
Her hand found a loose wooden piece.
She pulled.
A narrow compartment opened.
Inside was a cassette tape.
No phone.
No digital device.
Just an old cassette.
Mason found a player in the room.
The tape began.
Sarah's voice filled the silence.
“If you're hearing this, I didn't make it.”
Lily began crying.
Sarah continued.
“Margaret believes the money is what I'm protecting.”
A pause.
“She is wrong.”
My heart pounded.
“The thing I'm protecting is proof.”
The tape clicked.
Then Sarah said something that changed everything.
“Richard never intended the money to belong to Ethan.”
Ethan stared at the player.
“What?”
Sarah continued.
“He left it to the children of Willow House.”
Mason looked at the notebook.
Then the tape.
The entire fortune had been placed in a charitable trust.
Margaret had been trying to steal money that legally never belonged to the Morgan family.
But Sarah had one final sentence.
“If Ethan ever marries, make sure his wife knows the truth before Margaret knows she knows.”
The tape stopped.
Nobody moved.
Then Mason's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He listened.
Then looked at Lily.
“Daniel has been found.”
Lily stood.
“Where?”
