THE WOMAN ON HIS ARM / Chapter 5 / 8

Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH DANIEL WAS AFRAID TO TELL ME

The gala ended in chaos.

Security escorted Richard Hale away.

Vanessa stayed.

Daniel stayed.

And I took Ethan home.

The ride was silent.

Chicago lights moved across the car windows.

Ethan fell asleep with his head against my shoulder.

I looked at Daniel through the rearview mirror.

He sat in the passenger seat.

For the first time in sixteen years, he looked like a man who had run out of explanations.

When we arrived home, Ethan went upstairs.

Daniel remained in the kitchen.

I placed the blue folder on the counter.

“Start talking.”

He nodded.

“The family trust belonged to your grandmother.”

I frowned.

“She died before Ethan was born.”

“Yes.”

“What did she leave?”

“Northstar shares.”

I stared.

“My grandmother owned part of Northstar?”

“Originally.”

“How much?”

“Twenty-two percent.”

The exact number.

“So Ethan inherited it?”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You did.”

He shook his head.

“You did.”

I couldn't speak.

“My grandmother left the shares to me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did the documents say Ethan?”

“Because your grandmother added a condition.”

“What condition?”

Daniel hesitated.

“You couldn't access the shares until you turned forty.”

“And if I died before then?”

“Ethan would inherit them.”

I stared at him.

“So why hide it?”

“Because Hale wanted them.”

“Why?”

“Control.”

Daniel opened the blue folder.

Inside was an old letter.

My grandmother's handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

I read it.

She had written about Northstar.

About its research.

About children who depended on treatments funded by the company.

She had also written one sentence that made my hands shake.

DO NOT TRUST THE MAN WHO LOVES THE COMPANY MORE THAN THE CHILDREN.

I looked at Daniel.

“Was that you?”

“No.”

“Hale?”

“Yes.”

Daniel sat down.

“I discovered the trust after your grandmother died.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Hale discovered it too.”

“And?”

“He threatened Ethan.”

My chest tightened.

“What kind of threat?”

“He said if I transferred the shares, Ethan would become a target.”

I stared at him.

“So you lied to me to protect him?”

“Yes.”

“Then why Vanessa?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I was trying to create a reason for you to hate me.”

“What?”

“I thought if you hated me, you'd sign the divorce papers.”

“Why?”

“Because Hale believed you would never voluntarily surrender control of Northstar.”

I understood.

Daniel had deliberately destroyed our marriage in public.

He thought making me leave him would protect me.

It was twisted.

Cruel.

And completely unacceptable.

But it wasn't the whole story.

“Then why did you forge my signature?”

“I didn't.”

I froze.

“What?”

“I forged one document.”

He pointed at the financial authorization.

“But that signature wasn't mine.”

I looked closer.

“Then whose is it?”

Daniel's voice dropped.

“I don't know.”

The room went silent.

The signature looked like mine.

Too much like mine.

Someone had access to my records.

Someone had been preparing this long before the gala.

Daniel reached into the folder.

He pulled out another document.

“This arrived three weeks ago.”

It was an audit report.

The foundation had been used to move money.

But the transfers had been initiated from a computer registered to my home office.

My password.

My security credentials.

My name.

I looked at Daniel.

“You thought I did it.”

“I thought someone wanted it to look like you did.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“Of what would happen if you knew.”

I closed my eyes.

Sixteen years.

Sixteen years of marriage.

And both of us had been protecting each other with lies.

Then Ethan appeared on the stairs.

“Mom?”

I turned.

He held an old photograph.

“Look.”

I took it.

It showed my grandmother standing outside a Northstar laboratory.

Beside her was a younger Richard Hale.

And beside him was a young woman.

I recognized her.

Vanessa.

Impossible.

She looked maybe fifteen.

I turned the photograph over.

There was writing.

RICHARD'S DAUGHTER — KEEP HER OUT OF THE TRUST.

I looked toward the kitchen door.

Vanessa was standing there.

She stared at the photograph.

Her face went white.

“My father told me my mother was dead.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She stepped closer.

“My mother worked for your grandmother.”

Daniel stood.

“Vanessa…”

She shook her head.

“She disappeared when I was sixteen.”

She looked at the photograph.

“That woman is my mother.”

I stared.

The room had just changed again.

Vanessa wasn't simply Daniel's mistress.

She was connected to the family trust.

And suddenly her relationship with Daniel looked very different.

She whispered:

“My father didn't bring me into Daniel's life to help him.”

May you like

She looked at me.

“He sent me to find the trust.”
