Plot twist

Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Vincent couldn't speak.

His mother had been dead for eight years.

For most of his adult life, he had remembered her as a quiet woman who spent her final years tending roses behind their family home.

Now Arthur was telling him she had ordered a murder.

Amelia looked between them.

“Your mother killed my father?”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what did she do?”

“She gave the order.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“Why?”

Arthur lowered his eyes.

“Because Thomas was going to expose everyone.”

“Everyone who?”

Arthur looked at Amelia.

“Your father had discovered that money was being moved through a network connecting the Calder family, several politicians, and a private security company.”

“Blackwater,” Vincent said.

“Yes.”

“Who controlled it?”

Arthur hesitated.

“Your mother.”

Vincent's face tightened.

“No.”

“She didn't build it.”

“Then who did?”

“Your grandfather.”

Vincent stopped.

Arthur continued.

“Your grandfather started the network decades ago. Your mother inherited control after he died.”

Amelia felt sick.

“What about Raymond?”

“Raymond worked for her.”

Vincent looked away.

“How many people died?”

Arthur's voice dropped.

“I don't know.”

Amelia stepped forward.

“You know.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Seven.”

The room became silent.

“Seven people were killed because they knew too much.”

Amelia felt tears fill her eyes.

“And my father?”

“Number eight.”

Vincent's jaw tightened.

“You let him die.”

Arthur looked at him.

“I tried to save him.”

“How?”

“I warned your mother.”

“And?”

“She told me to stay out of it.”

Vincent turned away.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Amelia noticed something on the desk.

A small red notebook.

She opened it.

Inside were names.

Payments.

Dates.

And one final entry.

AMELIA HAYES — WATCH UNTIL SHE REMEMBERS.

She looked up.

“Why would they watch me?”

Arthur stared.

“Because your father didn't tell you everything.”

“What?”

“He hid something inside your memory.”

Amelia frowned.

“That makes no sense.”

Arthur pointed toward her.

“You were there the night he died.”

Amelia stopped breathing.

“No.”

“You were twelve.”

“I wasn't.”

“You were.”

“You said he died at the warehouse.”

“Yes.”

“My mother told me I was home.”

“She lied.”

Amelia's memories began shifting.

A dark hallway.

Her father's voice.

A door.

A man shouting.

A smell.

Gasoline.

She pressed her hand against her temple.

“No.”

Vincent moved toward her.

“Amelia?”

She whispered,

“I remember.”

Arthur stared.

“What?”

Amelia's eyes filled with tears.

“My father gave me something.”

“What?”

“A key.”

She reached beneath her shirt.

A brass key hung from a chain.

Arthur's face went white.

“That key.”

“What?”

“Your father hid the evidence inside the Calder family vault.”

Vincent stared.

“My vault?”

Arthur nodded.

“He knew only you could open it.”

The vault was beneath the oldest Calder property.

Vincent had never entered it.

His father had forbidden him.

The door opened with Amelia's key.

Inside was a room filled with boxes.

Old ledgers.

Photographs.

Documents.

And one cassette tape.

Vincent found an old player.

The tape began.

Thomas Hayes's voice filled the room.

“If Amelia is hearing this, then I'm already dead.”

Amelia covered her mouth.

Her father's voice continued.

“I'm sorry.”

He explained everything.

The money network.

The blackmail.

The murders.

And the final truth.

“I trusted Raymond.”

Amelia closed her eyes.

“Until I learned he was working for your mother.”

Vincent stared at Arthur.

Thomas continued.

“Raymond was ordered to watch Amelia.”

Then came the part that destroyed everything.

“Your mother knew.”

Vincent whispered,

“My mother.”

Thomas continued.

“She knew Amelia was the only person who could eventually expose the network.”

Amelia started crying.

“That's why Raymond married me.”

The tape confirmed it.

Raymond had not met Amelia by accident.

He had been assigned to her.

He had manipulated her.

Married her.

Controlled her.

And waited for her to remember what happened that night.

But there was one detail he hadn't anticipated.

Amelia had escaped.

The tape ended.

Silence filled the vault.

Vincent looked at Amelia.

“I am sorry.”

She shook her head.

“You didn't do this.”

“But my family did.”

“You didn't.”

He stepped closer.

She looked at him.

“You don't have to fix what they broke.”

“I know.”

“Then stop trying.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Vincent's voice softened.

“Because I care about you.”

Amelia looked away.

“You barely know me.”

“I know enough.”

Before she could answer, footsteps echoed above them.

Arthur looked toward the stairs.

“We're not alone.”

Vincent reached for his weapon.

A voice came from the darkness.

“That's right.”

Raymond.

He appeared at the top of the stairs.

His face looked older.

Colder.

But Amelia recognized him instantly.

He smiled.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

Amelia froze.

Vincent stepped in front of her.

Raymond laughed.

“You always did hide behind men.”

Vincent raised his weapon.

“Come down.”

Raymond held up his hands.

“I'm not here to fight.”

“Then why are you here?”

“I came to finish what I started.”

He threw a folder down the stairs.

It landed at Vincent's feet.

Inside were photographs.

Amelia.

Vincent.

The diner.

The hospital.

Their trip to Florida.

Everything had been watched.

Raymond smiled.

“You thought you were uncovering my secrets.”

He looked at Amelia.

“But you were walking exactly where I wanted you to walk.”
