Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO VANISHED WITH LUCA’S SECRET

Finding Lucia Ferraro took eleven days.
Adrian’s people could have found her faster.
Detective Morales refused to let them.
That caused the first serious argument Claire witnessed between Adrian and law enforcement.
“She could be in danger,” Adrian said.
Morales answered:
“She has survived twelve years without your security.”
“You don’t know that.”
“You don’t know that sending armed men to her door won’t scare her into disappearing again.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Claire sat near the conference table and watched.
Finally Adrian looked at her.
That annoyed her.
“Why are you looking at me?”
“You agree with her.”
“Yes.”
“Of course.”
Morales almost smiled.
Adrian exhaled.
“Fine.”
The police found Lucia through prescription records connected to an alias.
She lived outside Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Sixty-seven.
Retired art teacher.
Widowed under another name.
When Morales first contacted her, Lucia said:
“I have been waiting for this call since 2011.”
Then she refused to speak until Adrian promised he would not bring Salvatore.
He promised.
Claire did not understand why she was invited to the video interview until Lucia saw her.
The older woman stared.
“You’re Thomas’s girl.”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“You have his eyes.”
Claire almost cried.
“You knew my father?”
“Better than Adrian did.”
Adrian did not react defensively.
Good.
Lucia sat in a sunlit room surrounded by paintings.
She looked ordinary.
That was somehow shocking after eleven days of imagining a hidden Moretti conspirator.
Morales began.
“Why did you leave Chicago?”
Lucia looked at Adrian.
“Because Salvatore tried to kill me.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
“What?”
“Not personally.”
She looked tired.
“He rarely did anything personally.”
Claire watched Adrian absorb that.
Lucia continued.
“I owned Suite 1812 through a company because I was having an affair.”
Nobody expected that.
“With whom?” Morales asked.
“Carlo Bianchi.”
Bellini’s lieutenant.
Adrian’s face hardened.
Lucia raised a hand.
“Before you decide I sold Luca—no.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You look exactly like your father when you’re angry.”
Adrian went still.
Lucia continued.
“Carlo and I were together almost two years. Stupid. Dangerous. Real.”
“Did Salvatore know?”
“Eventually.”
“Luca?”
“Yes.”
Claire frowned.
“So Luca used your suite to meet Carlo.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Lucia’s eyes filled.
“Because Carlo wanted out too.”
A pattern.
Luca wanted to leave criminal operations.
Carlo apparently wanted out of Bellini’s.
Two young men from rival families trying to stop a feud.
“They planned to expose both sides’ port corruption.”
Morales leaned forward.
“What corruption?”
“Cargo theft. Payoffs. Protection money. Weapons.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Lucia continued:
“They were going to turn records over to federal investigators.”
Claire felt cold.
That was motive enough to kill both.
“What happened?”
“Salvatore found out.”
“How?”
Lucia looked away.
“Vanessa.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“She sold the meeting schedule.”
“Yes.”
“But she didn’t know why.”
“No.”
“Thomas’s recording says Luca believed she was being used.”
“She was.”
Lucia’s expression became bitter.
“Vanessa owed Bellini money because of gambling.”
Claire stared.
“Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
That explained eighty thousand.
“She was twenty-three and thought she could hide it.”
Lucia shook her head.
“Salvatore found out and offered to make the debt disappear if she told him whenever Luca used the hotel.”
Adrian stopped.
“Salvatore paid her debt?”
“Yes.”
“But Vanessa said Bellini paid her.”
“She lied.”
Why?
To protect Salvatore?
Or herself?
Lucia continued.
“Salvatore told Vanessa he only wanted to prevent Luca from embarrassing the family.”
“Did she believe him?”
“I think so.”
Not innocence.
Still betrayal.
But different.
“Who killed Luca?” Morales asked.
Lucia went quiet.
“Carlo was supposed to meet him the night he died.”
Adrian leaned forward.
“He didn’t.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Carlo was picked up by Bellini’s men before he reached the hotel.”
“And Luca?”
“Salvatore’s man went instead.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Lucia looked at Adrian.
“Domenic Russo.”
Caleb, standing behind Adrian, froze.
Claire noticed.
Adrian did too.
“Russo?”
Lucia nodded.
“Your father’s security chief.”
Adrian went pale.
Caleb’s father.
Claire turned slowly toward Caleb.
His face had lost all color.
“My father?”
Lucia looked through the screen.
“You’re Caleb.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
Caleb said nothing.
Lucia continued:
“Domenic was supposed to take Luca home.”
“Then why did he die?”
Lucia’s eyes filled.
“Because Luca refused.”
Adrian clenched his jaw.
“Domenic shot him?”
“I don’t know.”
Silence.
Not enough.
Lucia said:
“I know Domenic called Salvatore afterward.”
“From where?”
“The Harbor Grand.”
“How do you know?”
“Carlo had access to phone records through a Bellini contact.”
“Where are those records?”
Lucia looked down.
“Thomas had them.”
Claire’s heart jumped.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Luca trusted Thomas.”
Of course.
Lucia explained.
After Luca’s murder, Carlo panicked.
He gave Thomas copies of call logs proving Domenic contacted Salvatore minutes after the shooting.
Thomas hid them.
Then Carlo disappeared.
Likely killed by Bellini for cooperating with Luca.
Lucia understood she was next.
She fled.
“How did you survive?” Claire asked.
“My sister.”
Adrian frowned.
“My mother?”
Lucia nodded.
Adrian went still.
His mother, Elena Moretti, had died five years earlier.
“She helped you disappear?”
“Yes.”
“Did she know about Salvatore?”
“Eventually.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
Lucia’s face broke.
“Because you had already become what she feared Luca’s death would make you.”
The sentence hit hard.
Adrian looked away.
Lucia continued:
“You were angry.”
“Yes.”
“Violent.”
He did not deny it.
“You trusted Salvatore more than anyone.”
“Yes.”
“She thought if she accused him without proof, you would choose him.”
Adrian said nothing.
Claire felt the tragedy.
Everyone hiding truth because they believed they were protecting Adrian from himself.
And by doing so, they protected Salvatore.
Lucia leaned toward the camera.
“Elena asked Thomas to keep the records until Adrian was ready.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“My father knew your mother?”
“Yes.”
“Did he tell her where they were?”
“No.”
“Then how do we find them?”
Lucia smiled sadly.
“Thomas told me once he had only one place nobody in Chicago would search.”
Claire frowned.
“Where?”
“Somewhere connected to his daughter.”
Claire stared.
“What did he mean?”
Lucia laughed softly.
“He said, ‘Everybody thinks dads hide things in garages. Mine goes where Claire would kill me if I messed up the labels.’”
Claire’s mouth opened.
Her mother’s storage basement.
Thomas had helped organize it after Claire’s divorce.
Every box labeled meticulously because Claire hated disorder.
She stood so fast the chair scraped backward.
“I know where.”
Adrian stood too.
“Where?”
“My mother’s old house.”
The property had been empty for years.
Awaiting sale after probate complications.
Claire still had the keys.
They drove there with police.
No Moretti security inside.
Caleb remained outside, shaken by his father’s possible role.
The basement smelled like dust.
Boxes lined shelves.
HOLIDAYS.
CLAIRE COLLEGE.
THOMAS WORK.
Claire found one labeled:
CLAIRE — TAXES 2008.
She laughed through tears.
“My father knew I would never open old tax boxes unless forced.”
Inside?
No taxes.
Three ledgers.
Phone records.
A sealed envelope.
And one photograph.
Domenic Russo entering Suite 1812.
Time stamped forty-one minutes before Luca died.
Caleb’s father.
Then the envelope.
TO ADRIAN.
Adrian stared at it.
Claire handed it over.
He opened it.
Thomas’s handwriting.
Adrian,
If Luca is dead when you read this, then anger is going to be the easiest thing anyone can sell you.
Do not buy it.
Find out who profits from you being angry.
Adrian stopped.
Claire watched his hands begin to shake.
Thomas continued:
Your brother was trying to stop a war.
Whoever killed him will try to use you to start one.
Claire felt her throat close.
That was exactly what happened.
Then the final line:
And if Domenic Russo tells you Salvatore had nothing to do with it, ask him why he called Salvatore before he called an ambulance.
Adrian looked toward the basement stairs.
May you like
Outside waited Caleb Russo.
The son of the man Thomas had just accused of helping cover up Luca’s murder.
