Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE GIRL BEHIND THE BLUE DOOR

Seattle greeted them with rain.

Nora Vale lived in a quiet neighborhood near Lake Washington.

She was seventeen.

A straight-A student.

Violin player.

Volunteer at a children's hospital.

No criminal record.

No connection to organized crime.

At least, not publicly.

Claire watched her from across the street.

Nora stepped outside carrying a violin case.

She looked around.

Then paused.

She had noticed them.

Luca immediately said, “Stay here.”

Claire shook her head.

“She deserves to meet me.”

Luca looked at her.

“Not alone.”

Claire nodded.

They approached together.

Nora stared at Claire.

“Can I help you?”

Claire couldn't speak.

She had imagined this moment for years without knowing she was imagining it.

Finally, she said:

“My name is Claire.”

Nora looked confused.

Then at Luca.

“Who are you?”

Luca introduced himself.

Nora's expression changed.

“I know that name.”

“Most people do.”

“You're Luca Moretti.”

“Yes.”

“Why are you here?”

Claire held out the photograph.

Nora looked at it.

Her face went pale.

“Where did you get this?”

“My father.”

Nora stared.

“Your father?”

“Ethan Doyle.”

Nora took one step backward.

“That name isn't real.”

Claire's heart broke.

“What?”

“Marcus told me my biological parents died.”

Claire swallowed.

“So did I.”

Nora stared at her.

Then at Ivy.

Ivy had been standing behind Claire.

Nora looked at her.

The two girls locked eyes.

Ivy smiled faintly.

“Hi.”

Nora didn't answer.

Her eyes filled.

“You look like me.”

Claire nodded.

“You're my sister.”

Nora began crying.

“No.”

She backed away.

“No, you're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because we didn't know where you were.”

Nora shook her head.

“Marcus knew.”

“Yes.”

“He told me my mother abandoned me.”

Claire's face tightened.

“She didn't.”

Nora looked at her.

“Then where is she?”

Claire hesitated.

“Dead.”

Nora closed her eyes.

For a moment, the rain was the only sound.

Then she whispered:

“What about my father?”

Ethan stepped from behind the car.

Nora froze.

He looked at her.

“Hello, Nora.”

She stared.

“You.”

Ethan nodded.

“I know this is too much.”

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“You knew me?”

“I've watched from far away.”

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

Nora's expression hardened.

“You all say that.”

Claire understood.

She stepped closer.

“You don't have to forgive us.”

Nora looked at her.

“You're my sister.”

“Yes.”

“Do I have a family?”

Claire smiled through tears.

“If you want one.”

Nora looked at Ivy.

Ivy walked forward.

“I have crayons.”

Nora laughed through tears.

It was the first crack in the wall.

Then a gunshot shattered the moment.

Luca grabbed Nora.

Everyone dropped.

A car sped away.

Luca's security chased it.

Nora stared at the street.

“Marcus.”

Ethan nodded.

“He knows we found you.”

Nora suddenly looked terrified.

“He'll come for Ivy.”

Claire pulled Ivy close.

“We won't let him.”

Nora looked at her.

“You don't understand Marcus.”

“What don't we understand?”

“He raised me.”

Claire froze.

“He wasn't always cruel.”

Nora continued.

“He taught me languages.”

Luca's expression changed.

“How many?”

“Japanese. Korean. Mandarin. Russian.”

Claire looked at Ivy.

Nora noticed.

“I can read lips too.”

Ivy smiled.

“Me too.”

Nora stared at her.

Then whispered:

“That's why he raised me.”

They moved to a safe house.

Nora explained everything she remembered.

Marcus had always told her that language was power.

He had trained her to observe people.

To identify lies.

To remember conversations.

He never allowed her to ask about her parents.

But sometimes, late at night, he spoke to someone on the phone.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Ethan.

Another name.

Luca.

And one phrase.

“The Doyle girls.”

Claire's heart tightened.

“There are more records?”

Nora nodded.

Marcus kept a private archive.

“Where?”

“At the blue house.”

Luca looked at Ethan.

“The clinic?”

Nora shook her head.

“No.”

She pulled out a map.

“Another blue house.”

The address was outside the city.

They went that night.

The house stood beside a lake.

Blue door.

Exactly like Ivy remembered.

Inside, they found files.

Photographs.

Medical reports.

Adoption documents.

And a sealed envelope addressed:

CLAIRE DOYLE.

She opened it.

Inside was a letter from her biological mother.

My Claire,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from the people who wanted to use us.

Claire began crying.

The letter explained everything.

Her mother had discovered that an international criminal network was recruiting children with unusual language abilities.

She had tried to expose them.

She failed.

So she arranged for Claire to be adopted.

But another child was already in the network's hands.

Nora.

She begged whoever found the letter to protect both girls.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

THE MAN WHO CAN END THIS IS NOT ETHAN.

CLAIRE READ IT AGAIN.

Then the final line:

IT IS LUCA.

Luca stared at the letter.

“What does she mean?”

A noise came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Footsteps.

Luca raised his weapon.

Then Ivy whispered:

“It's not Marcus.”

“How do you know?”

“I can hear him breathing.”

Luca looked toward the stairs.

A figure appeared.

An elderly man.

Claire recognized him immediately.

Her biological father.

May you like

He smiled sadly.

“I've been waiting for my daughters.”
