Chapter 9 - THE DOVE LOCKET

Arthur froze. He looked down at his ruined suit jacket. The tiny red dot rested exactly over his heart, perfectly still.

He didn't move. He didn't breathe.

"Drop the gun, Arthur," a calm voice echoed from the doorway.

I turned. Standing there was Marcus. The VP of Operations. The man we thought was behind everything. Flanking him were four heavily armed tactical police officers. One of them held the laser-sighted rifle trained on my father.

Arthur slowly lowered his weapon, dropping it to the wet floor.

Tristan groaned, pushing himself up against the desk. I ran to him, pressing my hands to the bleeding cut on his temple.

"You're okay," I breathed, tears finally spilling over. "We're okay."

Marcus stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the chaos before landing on Arthur.

"You played a long game, Arthur," Marcus said, his voice laced with cold disgust. "But you underestimated Evelyn. Before she died, she sent a scheduled email to my private server. She told me everything. You set me up. You tried to murder my son."

Tristan looked at Marcus, his jaw tightening. "You knew?"

Marcus met Tristan's gaze, the hardened corporate shell cracking just a fraction. "I knew you were my son. I stayed away because your grandfather threatened to destroy both of us if I claimed you. I let Evelyn protect you. But I never stopped watching."

The police moved in, slamming Arthur against the wall and cuffing his hands behind his back.

As they dragged him past me, Arthur looked at me, his eyes wide and desperate. "Lily, I'm your father. You have to help me!"

I didn't blink. I reached into my pocket, pulled out the heavy silver dove bracelet my mother had given me, and dropped it into his coat pocket.

"You stopped being my father the day you left," I said quietly. "Enjoy prison."

Two Weeks Later

The sun was shining brightly through the large windows of the private recovery suite.

My mother sat up in bed, looking frail but genuinely happy. The bruising had faded, and color had returned to her cheeks. She was holding a small cup of tea, laughing softly at something Tristan had just said.

Tristan sat in the chair beside her bed, looking completely out of place in a hospital room in his tailored suit, but entirely comfortable at the same time.

I stood by the window, watching them, a profound sense of peace washing over me.

The nightmare was over. Arthur was in federal custody, facing multiple counts of attempted murder, embezzlement, and corporate espionage. The letters we recovered proved everything, clearing Marcus and securing Tristan’s position as CEO.

Marcus and Tristan were taking slow, awkward steps toward building a relationship. It wasn't perfect, but it was honest.

Tristan stood up, gently taking the empty teacup from my mother. "I'll let you rest, Sarah. Lily and I have a meeting."

My mother smiled warmly at him. "Take care of her, Tristan."

"I always will," he promised softly.

He walked over to me, offering his hand. I took it, letting him pull me into the hallway.

"Meeting?" I raised an eyebrow as we walked toward the elevator. "I resigned as your secretary yesterday, remember?"

Tristan chuckled, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me close. "I remember. Which means HR can no longer fire us for fraternization."

He stopped in front of the elevator doors and turned to face me. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

My breath caught.

He opened it. Inside wasn't a ring, but the delicate gold necklace with the child's fingerprint—the one we had found in the bank vault. My necklace.

Tristan stepped behind me, brushing my hair aside, and fastened the cool gold chain around my neck. The heavy pendant rested directly over my heart.

"You spent your whole life trying to survive, Lily," Tristan murmured, kissing the top of my head. "It's time you start living."

I turned around, wrapping my arms around his neck, and pulled him down for a kiss. For the first time in my life, I wasn't scared of the future. I wasn't running.

I was exactly where I belonged.
