Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT THE VERANO EMPIRE BROKE IN HALF

The first thing Luca heard inside Pier Seventeen was Marco laughing.
Not because anything was funny.
Because Marco laughed when violence became inevitable.
“Your timing is terrible!” he shouted from somewhere in the dark.
Luca fired toward a muzzle flash.
“So is yours!”
Federal agents entered from the eastern side.
Vittorio’s men scattered.
The warehouse became noise.
Metal.
Shouting.
Gunshots.
Commands.
Luca moved toward the last place he had seen Isabel.
A figure lunged.
Luca struck him.
Another came from behind.
Marco intercepted.
For fifteen years, they had fought beside each other often enough that movement required almost no language.
That familiarity had once been built for survival inside the old Verano world.
Tonight, Luca intended it to help end that world.
“Valentina!” Marco shouted.
“Left office!”
Luca moved.
He found Valentina behind a steel desk, wrists tied.
She looked at his face.
“You ruined dinner.”
He cut the restraints.
“Your standards remain unreasonable.”
“Is Elena prettier in normal circumstances?”
Luca stared.
Valentina smiled despite the bruise.
“I was kidnapped, not blinded.”
“Go.”
She grabbed his sleeve.
“Vittorio took Elena’s sister toward the loading bay.”
Luca turned.
“Marco!”
“I heard!”
They split.
Outside, Elena waited in the command vehicle with Agent Reeves.
She hated every second.
The audio feed broke repeatedly.
Gunfire came through as sharp static.
She called Isabel’s phone again.
This time, someone answered.
No words.
Only breathing.
“Elena?”
A whisper.
“Help.”
“Isabel?”
Then Vittorio’s voice.
“Your sister is persistent.”
Elena’s blood froze.
“Where is she?”
“Near the river.”
Reeves motioned for the trace team.
Elena continued.
“What do you want?”
“You.”
Reeves shook his head.
Elena ignored him.
“You already have Isabel.”
“She is not the mother of Antonio’s heir.”
Sophia.
“Elena,” Reeves whispered, “keep him talking.”
She wanted to hit him.
Instead she asked, “Why Sophia?”
Vittorio laughed.
“Because men like Luca become predictable when they love something.”
“And you?”
“I love survival.”
“That isn’t love.”
A pause.
Vittorio’s voice hardened.
“You sound like Antonio’s wife.”
“Maybe she was smarter than you too.”
Reeves mouthed good.
Elena almost rolled her eyes.
Vittorio continued.
“Come to Loading Gate Four.”
“No.”
“Then Isabel goes into the Hudson.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Her sister had protected Sophia for five years.
Babysat.
Moved cities.
Changed jobs.
Lied to everyone.
“I’m coming.”
Reeves grabbed her wrist.
“No.”
She ended the call.
“He’ll kill her.”
“He may kill both of you.”
“He needs me alive.”
“For now.”
Elena looked toward the warehouse.
“Luca would go.”
“Yes.”
“And everyone lets him.”
“That is not the argument you think it is.”
But Elena had already decided.
Not recklessly.
Not alone.
She made Reeves follow her.
At Loading Gate Four, rain blew sideways from the river.
Vittorio stood near a black SUV.
Isabel beside him.
Gun against her ribs.
Elena approached slowly.
Reeves’s agents remained hidden.
“Let her go.”
Vittorio smiled.
“You look exactly as Antonio described you.”
“That isn’t flattering.”
“No. He admired you.”
That surprised her.
“He threatened me.”
“He was afraid.”
“For Luca?”
“For what Luca would become with you.”
Elena stared.
Vittorio continued.
“Antonio knew Luca might leave.”
“The family?”
“The empire.”
Elena understood.
“You wanted Luca trapped.”
“Duty made him useful.”
“And Sophia made him human.”
Vittorio’s smile vanished.
“Human men make weak bosses.”
A voice came from behind.
“Then I resign.”
Vittorio turned.
Luca stood twenty feet away.
Gun lowered at his side.
Blood at his temple.
Alive.
Elena’s knees nearly weakened.
Vittorio laughed.
“You resign?”
“From everything you think matters.”
“Luca.”
“The old operations end.”
“You do not have that authority.”
“I do.”
“You’ll destroy what your grandfather built.”
“He built fear.”
“He built a name.”
“I have a daughter.”
The simplicity silenced everyone.
Luca continued.
“She will inherit my name whether I deserve that or not.”
His eyes moved briefly to Elena.
“But she will not inherit this.”
Vittorio shoved the gun harder against Isabel.
“You think you can wash blood out with paperwork?”
“No.”
Luca’s voice became quiet.
“I think I can stop adding to it.”
Elena stared.
This was not the man who had promised to fix everything by force.
This was a man choosing what kind of father he wanted to be.
Vittorio’s face twisted.
“Antonio would be ashamed.”
“No.”
Marco appeared near the loading bay doors.
“He wouldn’t.”
Vittorio turned.
Marco held Antonio’s original letter.
“His last instruction was to protect Luca from your war.”
Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.
“You traitorous dog.”
Marco smiled.
“Accurate.”
Vittorio’s attention shifted for half a second.
Isabel moved.
She slammed her heel into his foot and twisted.
The gun fired.
Elena screamed.
Luca lunged.
Vittorio went down under him.
Agents poured from cover.
Marco dragged Isabel away.
Reeves shouted commands.
Vittorio fought like an older man terrified of losing relevance.
Luca pinned him.
His hand closed around Vittorio’s throat.
Everything stopped.
Not physically.
Morally.
Luca could kill him.
Everyone knew it.
Vittorio knew it too.
He smiled through blood.
“Do it.”
Luca’s grip tightened.
“Prove you are Antonio’s son.”
Elena saw the old Luca.
The one who solved threats permanently.
The man his father raised.
Then Luca looked toward her.
Not for permission.
For remembrance.
Sophia.
Five years old.
Silver eyes.
Do bad people say sorry?
Luca released his uncle.
He stood.
“Arrest him.”
Reeves’s agents moved.
Vittorio stared from the ground.
“You coward.”
Luca looked down.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“I’m finally brave enough to let you live with losing.”
They handcuffed Vittorio.
Isabel was bruised but unharmed.
Valentina walked out under her own power and immediately complained about federal blankets.
Marco had a bullet crease along his shoulder.
Luca touched the blood at his temple.
Elena reached him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then she slapped him.
Marco turned away.
Reeves looked shocked.
Luca touched his cheek.
“I deserved that?”
“You ran into a warehouse.”
“You came to a loading dock.”
“I had federal agents.”
“I had Marco.”
“That is not better.”
“It is arguably better.”
She slapped his chest this time.
Then kissed him.
The kiss stunned them both.
Five years disappeared and remained simultaneously.
Luca touched her face.
Elena pulled back.
“This changes nothing.”
“Obviously.”
“I mean it.”
“So do I.”
His forehead rested against hers.
“We have to learn each other again.”
“Yes.”
“And Sophia first.”
“Yes.”
“And no guarded mansion.”
He sighed.
“Elena.”
“No.”
“One guard.”
“We’ll discuss it.”
“That sounds like progress.”
She almost smiled.
Then Luca’s phone rang.
Marco answered his own at the same moment.
Both men’s expressions changed.
“What?” Elena asked.
Marco looked at Luca.
“The trust.”
Antonio’s thirty-million-dollar reserve.
“What about it?”
“Someone triggered a transfer request.”
Luca went still.
“Vittorio is in custody.”
“Yes.”
“Then who?”
Marco looked toward Valentina.
No.
Then Reeves.
No.
Finally, his expression darkened.
“There’s only one other person who knew the account structure.”
Luca already knew.
Dr. Bellini.
The man who had performed Sophia’s DNA test.
The man Luca trusted with his mother’s final illness.
The man Antonio appointed as trust protector.
Elena whispered, “The doctor.”
Luca looked toward the city.
The war was not over.
Vittorio had been loud.
May you like
Bellini had spent decades being invisible.
And Sophia was currently hidden in a house whose location Dr. Bellini had helped select.
