Part 12: The Subterranean Cache

The transition from the frozen shoreline to the interior vault of the ruined lighthouse structure required clinical precision.

The stone tower rose eighty feet into the freezing air, its glass lantern housing shattered and black against the sky.

We entered through the lower maintenance passage, our boots crunching over layers of old coal dust and rusted iron.

Victoria held her diagnostic terminal steady, tracking the residual battery drain from Eleanor's last cellular handshake.

"The transmission node wasn't located in the upper watchroom, Ethan," Victoria whispered, pointing toward the floorboards.

"The signal line was routed through an underground utility conduit buried beneath the central oil cistern block."

I knelt by the iron rim of the dry tank, finding a manual lever hidden behind a rusted structural plate.

The heavy steel cylinder shifted with a loud, mechanical groan, revealing a narrow concrete spiral staircase going downward.

The air inside the lower vault was completely dry, smelling of old paper, layout ink, and ancient battery acid.

Row after row of metal filing cabinets lined the subterranean stone walls, each bearing an engraved tree symbol.

"Michael didn't destroy the original volunteer ledger sheets when he vanished from the Chicago office," Arthur noted.

"He archived every single identity certificate here to prevent the board from siphoning the children’s protection funds."
