PART 2: The Man Waiting in Suite 904

The lobby fell into absolute silence.
Even the pianist stopped playing.
The bouquet of red roses slipped from Patricia's trembling hands and scattered across the polished marble floor.
No one bent down to pick them up.
Every eye was fixed on the Chief Financial Officer.
Ethan remained calm.
He gently shifted Lily higher against his shoulder, making sure she stayed asleep before asking the only question that mattered.
"Who is upstairs?"
The CFO, Michael Rhodes, shook his head.
"We don't know."
"You don't know?"
"The security cameras covering the executive hallway went offline twelve minutes ago."
Daniel Collins felt his stomach drop.
"Offline?"
Michael nodded.
"Every camera."
"The electronic locks stopped responding."
"And someone entered Suite 904 using an executive master credential."
Victoria Ashcroft crossed her arms.
"Did you call the police?"
"They're already on their way."
Michael looked directly at Ethan.
"I didn't want you walking into that suite alone."
For several long seconds, Ethan said nothing.
Then he carefully handed the bouquet to Lupita.
"Could you hold these for me?"
She accepted them gently.
"Of course."
"And if Lily wakes up..."
"I'll be right here."
Ethan smiled faintly.
"Thank you."
Lily stirred.
Her sleepy eyes opened halfway.
"Daddy..."
"I'm here."
"Are we home?"
"Not yet."
She yawned.
"I don't like hotels."
Several employees lowered their eyes.
None of them deserved that innocent sentence.
Ethan kissed her forehead.
"We'll find somewhere safe."
Victoria stepped closer.
"Let me take Lily."
"You'll need both hands."
Ethan hesitated.
His daughter had barely left his arms since Sarah died.
But he trusted Victoria.
She had been Sarah's closest friend.
Lily reached toward her without opening her eyes completely.
"Aunt Vicky..."
Victoria smiled sadly.
"I've got you, sweetheart."
Within seconds Lily was asleep again.
Michael looked relieved.
"Security is waiting."
Ethan nodded.
"Let's go."
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
"I'll come too."
Ethan looked at him.
"You made your business decision."
Daniel lowered his head.
"I know."
"I made the wrong one."
"I'm asking for the chance to make one right."
Ethan studied him for a moment.
Then nodded once.
The group entered the private executive elevator.
No one spoke during the ride.
Floor numbers climbed silently.
Thirty-eight.
Thirty-nine.
Forty.
Michael finally broke the silence.
"We've tried calling the suite."
"No answer."
"The emergency override?"
"Disabled."
Daniel frowned.
"That's impossible."
"It requires two executive authorizations."
Michael looked at Ethan.
"Exactly."
The elevator doors opened onto the ninth floor.
The hallway was strangely quiet.
Too quiet.
Normally two security officers stood outside the executive suites.
Now...
The hallway was empty.
Michael whispered,
"Where are they?"
Ethan noticed it immediately.
One security radio lay on the carpet.
Still transmitting static.
He crouched.
Picked it up.
A faint voice crackled through.
"...north stairwell..."
Then silence.
Daniel looked terrified.
"This isn't a robbery."
"No."
Ethan agreed.
"It isn't."
They approached Suite 904.
The door stood slightly open.
No sign of forced entry.
No noise inside.
Michael reached for the handle.
Ethan stopped him.
"I'll go first."
Without waiting for an answer, he pushed the door open.
The suite was immaculate.
The lights were on.
Soft jazz played quietly from the living room speakers.
The dining table had been set for three people.
Three plates.
Three wine glasses.
Three folded napkins.
Someone had even lit candles.
Daniel whispered,
"What..."
On the center of the table rested a framed family photograph.
Ethan froze.
It was impossible.
The picture showed Ethan...
Sarah...
...and Lily.
Taken five years earlier on a beach in California.
The same vacation where Sarah had first learned she was pregnant.
Ethan slowly picked it up.
He had never printed that photograph.
It existed only on an encrypted hard drive at home.
Michael stared.
"Who could have gotten this?"
Before Ethan answered...
A slow clap echoed from the bedroom.
Everyone turned.
An elderly man wearing a perfectly tailored gray suit stepped calmly into the room.
Silver hair.
Expensive watch.
Confident smile.
He looked to be in his early seventies.
"Good evening, Ethan."
Daniel frowned.
"Who are you?"
The man ignored him.
Instead, his eyes settled on Ethan.
"It's been a very long time."
Ethan didn't recognize him.
"I'm sorry..."
"Have we met?"
The man's smile faded slightly.
"No."
"You were too young to remember."
Michael looked confused.
"What is he talking about?"
The stranger reached into his jacket.
Daniel immediately tensed.
Instead of a weapon...
He removed an old black-and-white photograph.
He handed it to Ethan.
The image showed a smiling woman holding a baby outside a small farmhouse.
Ethan stared.
His breathing slowed.
The woman...
Was his mother.
The baby...
Was him.
Standing beside them...
Was the stranger.
Ethan looked up sharply.
"My mother never mentioned you."
"I know."
"She wasn't allowed to."
Daniel frowned.
"Allowed?"
The man nodded.
"Your father made sure of that."
Ethan felt a knot form in his stomach.
"My father died when I was eight."
The stranger sighed.
"No."
"He abandoned you when you were eight."
Silence.
"What?"
"Your father is very much alive."
Michael laughed nervously.
"This is insane."
The stranger looked directly at him.
"Check Ethan's birth certificate."
"It doesn't list a father's signature."
Ethan's face changed.
Because that part...
Was true.
His mother had always avoided questions about it.
Whenever he asked...
She simply smiled sadly and changed the subject.
The stranger continued.
"My name is Arthur Bennett."
"I was your mother's older brother."
Ethan blinked.
"My uncle?"
Arthur nodded.
"The only one you have."
"You disappeared."
"I was forced to."
"Why?"
Arthur looked toward the window overlooking downtown Chicago.
"Because twenty-nine years ago..."
"...your father stole something that never belonged to him."
Michael crossed his arms.
"What?"
Arthur looked back at Ethan.
"The Grand Regent."
Daniel frowned.
"That's impossible."
"Ethan built this company."
Arthur smiled.
"Yes."
"He built the company."
"But the land..."
"...was never legally his father's to sell."
Ethan stared.
"I bought this property fifteen years ago."
"You bought it from a holding company."
Arthur nodded.
"A company secretly controlled by your father."
The room became quiet again.
Arthur reached into a leather briefcase sitting beside the sofa.
He placed several aged documents onto the dining table.
Original land deeds.
Family trust records.
Old court filings.
Each one carried official state seals.
"I've spent twenty years collecting these."
Ethan slowly turned the pages.
Every document pointed toward one conclusion.
Someone had hidden an enormous fraud decades earlier.
Daniel whispered,
"My God..."
Arthur looked directly at Ethan.
"Your father didn't abandon you because he stopped loving your mother."
"He disappeared because someone paid him to disappear."
Michael frowned.
"Who?"
Arthur answered calmly.
"The same people..."
"...who murdered Sarah."
The room went completely still.
Ethan's voice dropped to barely a whisper.
"What did you say?"
Arthur didn't blink.
"I said your wife's death..."
"...wasn't an accident."
At that exact second...
Ethan's phone vibrated.

A security alert flashed across the screen.
