Chapter 4 - THE SILENT GARRISON

The early morning sun of a chilly November Friday began to break through the gray fog, doing nothing to warm the freezing resolve in my chest.
I stood on the wide gravel driveway of the estate, my military uniform crisp, my posture rigid and completely unbreakable.
Beside me stood Captain Miller and three uniform deputies, their eyes fixed on the front door of the mansion as the clock struck 8:00 AM.
Inside, Eleanor and Audrey were frantically packing their designer suitcases, their voices echoing through the empty hallways in a state of high-pitched panic.
They had spent the entire night trying to access the offshore accounts, only to find every digital key and security protocol completely locked.
"Thomas, this is an absolute setup!" Eleanor screamed as she burst through the front door, her face a pale mask of desperate fury.
"You cannot legally evict me from this house! I am your mother!"
"You ceased being my mother the moment you raised your hand against my wife and allowed my son to burn with a one-hundred-and-four-degree fever, Eleanor," I said, my voice quiet, steady, and carrying an absolute, unyielding authority.
"This property was purchased through my military trust, and you have been living here under a temporary, revocable permission."
"The permission is officially revoked as of nine this morning."
Audrey stepped onto the porch, her designer coat wrinkled, her eyes wide with a sudden, overwhelming panic as she saw the marshals.
"Lucas, please!" Audrey sobbed, her high-society composure entirely disintegrating into a mask of raw, primitive terror.
"We were only trying to help! The baby was crying constantly, and we were so stressed!"
"The video footage shows you drinking wine on the sofa while my wife begged you to let her call the pediatrician, Audrey," I replied coldly.
"It shows you laughing while Eleanor took her phone and locked her in the nursery."
"You aren't victims of stress."
"You are predators who targeted a pregnant woman and an infant to protect your corporate debts."
Mark Ellison stepped forward, handing the official eviction and asset seizure papers to the lead deputy.
"The federal marshals have already secured the arrest warrants for grand larceny, child endangerment, and physical assault, Eleanor," Mark announced.
"Your brother's construction firm in Panama has been shut down, and your husband's bank accounts have been permanently frozen by the Treasury Division."
"You have exactly five minutes to step into the back of that police cruiser, or the deputies will remove you by force."
Eleanor looked at the uniform officers, then at the locked silver briefcase, and finally at the son she had believed she could control with her high-society threats.

She let out a sharp, hysterical cry, her luxury suitcase falling onto the gravel as the deputy gently but firmly secured her wrists in steel handcuffs.
The golden queen of the Vance family was reduced to a shivering, pale felon, her life of luxury traded for a concrete cell.
