Plot twist

Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE MANAGER

They returned to the mansion before sunrise.

Evelyn was waiting in the kitchen.

She stood beside the coffee machine as if nothing had happened.

“Good morning.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You're leaving.”

Her face fell.

“I don't understand.”

“You know exactly why.”

Claire stood behind Adrian.

Evelyn looked at her.

“I warned you.”

“You threatened me,” Claire said.

“No.”

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“I warned you because I knew what they were capable of.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Who?”

Evelyn looked toward the windows.

Then she whispered, “Your mother.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

She reached into her apron and removed an old photograph.

It showed Margaret standing beside Adrian's father.

Between them stood Evelyn.

The date was written on the back.

October 14, 2009.

Evelyn explained that she had worked for Adrian's father before Adrian knew her.

She had discovered irregular payments.

She confronted Margaret.

Margaret denied everything.

Then Evelyn's son disappeared.

Not permanently.

But for three days.

He was fourteen.

Someone had taken him from school and left him outside a bus station.

No ransom.

No explanation.

Evelyn believed it was a warning.

She resigned.

Years later, Adrian's father hired her again.

She accepted because she believed she could finally protect the family.

But after his death, someone approached her.

They knew about her son.

They threatened him again.

Evelyn became an unwilling informant.

Adrian's expression softened slightly.

“You were working for them.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“The people your father was investigating.”

“Names.”

“I never knew all of them.”

“Then what do you know?”

She reached beneath the counter.

A small box appeared.

Inside was Adrian's father's silver watch.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Evelyn handed it to him.

“Your father gave me this the night before he died.”

He opened the back.

Inside the watch was a tiny memory card.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus nodded.

“That's what we've been looking for.”

They inserted it into a laptop.

A recording appeared.

Adrian's father's voice filled the room.

“If you're hearing this, I didn't trust the wrong person.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

“I trusted too many.”

The recording continued.

“The theft inside Cole Meridian is larger than money. Someone is using our contracts to move information and influence between companies.”

Claire squeezed Adrian's hand.

His father's voice continued.

“Margaret knows part of it.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“But she is not the architect.”

Everyone went silent.

Then the recording named the architect.

Not a stranger.

Not a competitor.

Not a criminal hiding overseas.

Someone Adrian had trusted.

His father's voice said:

“Marcus knows.”

Adrian slowly looked at Marcus.

Marcus went pale.

The recording continued.

“But Marcus is not guilty. He has been pretending to work for them.”

Adrian's eyes filled with disbelief.

His father continued.

“He believes he can expose them from inside.”

The recording stopped.

Marcus lowered his head.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“You lied to me for seventeen years.”

“I protected you.”

“You let Claire suffer.”

“I didn't know the threats had escalated.”

Adrian's anger broke through.

“You knew enough.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

Then Claire noticed something.

The recording timestamp.

It had been made the night before Adrian's father's death.

She looked at Adrian.

“There's something missing.”

“What?”

“Your father said Margaret wasn't the architect.”

She pointed to the screen.

“But he never named the architect.”

Adrian looked at the memory card.

There was another file.

Encrypted.

Before they could open it, every light in the house went out.

The emergency generator failed.

Claire gasped.

Then came a child's voice from the hallway.

“Daddy?”

Adrian froze.

That was impossible.

Their baby wasn't born.

Then he recognized the voice.

It was a recording.

Their unborn son's heartbeat had been recorded during an ultrasound.

Someone had turned it into an audio message.

A speaker crackled.

Then a woman's voice said:

“You have until midnight to bring me the notebook.”

Adrian looked toward Claire.

The voice continued.

“Or your wife loses the baby.”

The speaker went silent.

May you like

Then the front door unlocked by itself.

And Margaret walked inside.
