Plot twist

Chapter 8 - THE LAST PERSON THEY EXPECTED

The notebook changed everything.

For six years, Adrian had believed the enemy began with Richard Hale.

Now he understood Richard had inherited the operation from someone else.

Someone who had been manipulating the Cole family long before Adrian became CEO.

Marcus studied the notebook.

“These numbers are old.”

“How old?”

“Twenty years.”

Adrian looked at his mother.

Margaret said nothing.

“Mom.”

She finally spoke.

“Your grandfather.”

Adrian froze.

His grandfather had built the original Cole shipping business.

He had died when Adrian was eleven.

“He started it?”

Margaret shook her head.

“He didn't start the theft.”

She looked at Claire.

“He started the system that made it possible.”

Claire frowned.

“What system?”

Margaret explained that the family had once used private holding companies to move assets between businesses.

Legal at the time.

But after Adrian's grandfather died, Richard and several executives discovered they could manipulate those structures.

Adrian's father tried to stop them.

That's why he died.

But there was still one mystery.

Why Claire?

Margaret looked at her.

“Because your father knew.”

Claire went still.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Her father had died when she was nineteen.

He had always been distant.

Claire had assumed he simply didn't love her.

Now Margaret told her the truth.

Her father had been the accountant who first discovered the hidden transfers.

He had confronted Adrian's grandfather.

He had been silenced professionally.

His reputation destroyed.

Claire stared at the floor.

“All these years…”

She couldn't finish.

Adrian took her hand.

“I believe you.”

She looked at him.

“You should be angry.”

“I am.”

“With me?”

“No.”

He squeezed her hand.

“Never for being afraid.”

A car horn sounded outside.

Everyone turned.

A limousine stopped at the gate.

Richard Hale stepped out.

He walked toward the house alone.

No guards.

No lawyers.

No weapon visible.

Adrian went outside.

Richard smiled.

“You look tired.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You have ten seconds.”

Richard sighed.

“You always did inherit your father's temper.”

“You threatened my wife.”

“I never threatened Claire.”

“You manipulated her.”

“I protected the company.”

“You terrorized my family.”

Richard looked genuinely hurt.

“Adrian, I protected you.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Richard looked past him.

At Claire.

Then at Margaret.

“You finally told him.”

Margaret's face hardened.

“Yes.”

Richard nodded.

“Then there's no reason to pretend anymore.”

He explained that he had never intended to hurt Claire.

The photographs were designed to frighten her into leaving Adrian.

The divorce was supposed to separate her from the trust.

The messages were meant to make her believe Adrian was having an affair.

But someone had gone beyond his instructions.

“Who?”

Richard looked toward Evelyn.

She had appeared in the doorway.

Evelyn stepped outside.

Richard's face changed.

“You.”

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“I am sorry.”

Claire stared.

Evelyn admitted she had sent the photographs.

But she had done it because Richard had threatened her son.

The gun, however, was not hers.

Neither was the bedroom photograph.

Someone else had entered the house.

Someone else had taken the bracelet.

Adrian's expression tightened.

“Who?”

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

Marcus seemed to understand before anyone else.

He turned toward the driveway.

A second vehicle was approaching.

A woman stepped out.

Claire whispered:

“Nora.”

Her sister walked toward them.

But she wasn't crying.

She was carrying a suitcase.

The same suitcase Claire had packed.

Nora placed it on the ground.

“I did it.”

Claire stared.

“You?”

Nora nodded.

“I put the notebook in your suitcase.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew Adrian would search it.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You've been working against us.”

“No.”

Nora's voice broke.

“I've been trying to expose them.”

She explained that she had discovered Richard's operation months earlier.

But she had been blackmailed.

Her husband had gambling debts.

Richard had used them to control her.

Nora had staged several incidents to make Claire believe Margaret was behind the threats.

But the gun wasn't hers.

The gun belonged to Richard's security chief.

Nora had discovered it too late.

Then came the final revelation.

The person who had actually entered Adrian's bedroom was not Richard.

Not Evelyn.

Not Nora.

It was someone with unrestricted access to the house.

Someone whose fingerprints would never raise suspicion.

Someone Claire trusted completely.

Adrian looked toward the mansion.

The answer came from the nursery.

A soft sound.

A music box playing.

Claire's favorite lullaby.

She froze.

“That music box was locked.”

Adrian rushed upstairs.

Inside the nursery, the music box sat open.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

You have been looking at the wrong family.

Adrian turned the paper over.

There was a photograph.

Claire's mother stood beside Adrian's grandfather.

And between them was a little girl.

Claire.

But the date was twenty years before Claire was born.

Adrian stared.

Claire whispered:

“That can't be me.”

Then Margaret walked into the room.

She looked at the photograph.

And whispered:

“No.”

May you like

Her face collapsed.

“That's my sister.”
