Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Secret Affair

On Thursday afternoon, the grand ballroom at the Bellevue Hotel was filled with over two hundred prominent figures from Philadelphia’s commercial real estate community.

It was the annual Regional Property Developer Awards—an event Ethan had spent three months preparing for, hoping to secure a multi-million-dollar construction backing from institutional investors.

Ethan stood near the central champagne tower wearing a tailored tuxedo, clutching a glass of scotch, his arm wrapped possessively around Julianna Croft’s waist.

Julianna wore a shimmering red floor-length gown, her diamond necklace sparkling under the chandeliers, as she laughed softly at a joke made by a potential investor.

Patricia stood right beside them, wearing a champagne satin dress, loudly boasting to a group of socialites about her son’s "brilliant financial mind" and his "upcoming corporate expansion."

"Ethan worked so hard for this success," Patricia announced, her voice carrying over the string quartet music. "He finally cut loose the dead weight in his life. A real man deserves a partner who brings value to his table, not a helpless charity case."

"Is that right, Patricia?"

The sharp, clear voice echoed from the carpeted entrance of the ballroom.

The chatter near the champagne tower faltered.

I stepped into the warm glow of the chandeliers wearing a tailored navy power suit, my dark hair styled in a flawless, sleek knot, my posture straight, my eyes bright and unshakeable.

Beside me walked two uniformed county sheriffs and Evelyn Vance, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

Ethan dropped his glass of scotch.

The crystal shattered against the hardwood floor, dark liquid splashing across the toes of his polished shoes.

Patricia froze, her face draining of every drop of color as her hand clutched her pearl necklace.

"Clara...?" Ethan stammered, stepping back from Julianna, his voice trembling in front of the surrounding investors. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be—"

"In a hospital room?" I interrupted smoothly, taking three deliberate steps forward, the click of my heels sounding like a ticking clock in the silent room.

"Or perhaps sleeping on the streets, like your mother promised I would be?"
