Chapter 6 - The Sheriffs at the Door

Julianna Croft stepped forward, her hand on her hip, her chin raised in arrogant defiance. "Look, Clara, if you're here to cause a pathetic scene because Ethan chose me over an unemployed housewife, security will escort you out!"

Evelyn Vance pulled a certified legal document from her briefcase, stepping directly between Julianna and the crowd of investors.

"Miss Croft," Evelyn announced, her voice carrying across the entire ballroom, "I suggest you refrain from speaking until your criminal defense attorney arrives."

"As of one hour ago, the Federal District Attorney has issued a freezing order on Lumina Marketing LLC for grand larceny and wire fraud involving three hundred and forty thousand dollars in embezzled trust capital."

Julianna’s arrogant expression completely collapsed. She looked at Ethan, her eyes wide with sudden terror. "Ethan... what is she talking about?! You told me that money was your private executive bonus!"

Ethan couldn't speak. Sweat broke out across his forehead, his collar suddenly looking three sizes too small for his neck.

The lead sheriff stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Ethan Vance," the sheriff declared, "you are under arrest for domestic assault, corporate wire fraud, and grand larceny."

Patricia let out a shriek of horror, clutching her son’s arm as the officers forced Ethan’s hands behind his back, the steel handcuffs clicking shut with a loud, final snap in front of every major investor in the city.

"Clara! Please!" Patricia wept, falling onto her knees on the ballroom floor, her champagne dress rumpled as she reached out to me. "He is your husband! You can't do this to our family! Think of our reputation!"

I looked down at the woman who had stood over me while I was burning with a forty-degree fever, calling me worthless while I lay on my kitchen floor.

"You don't have a family reputation anymore, Patricia," I said softly, looking her straight in the eyes.

"And as for the house in Bryn Mawr..." I added, pulling an emergency court eviction execution notice from my pocket and placing it in her hands.

"The sheriffs are changing the locks on the front doors right now."
