Chapter 2 - The Silent Audit

The air inside the secure clinical room of St. Jude's Medical Center was quiet, sterile, and cold.
I sat on the edge of the examination table, a soft white towel draped over my shoulders as the nurse gently wiped the remaining chocolate residue and tiny glass shards from the scratch above my right eye. The physical pain of the impact was nothing compared to the quiet, burning focus that was currently organizing my mind.
The door of the room opened, and my older brother, Captain Ryan Hastings of the Federal Treasury Division, stepped inside. He wore his sharp, dark utility uniform, his face a rigid, unyielding mask of absolute, protective fury as he looked at the bandage on my forehead.
"The video feed has been fully authenticated, Sophia," Ryan said, his voice a low, vibrating baritone. "The federal prosecutor has already upgraded the domestic violence charges against Catherine DuPont to include aggravated assault, harassment, and corporate coercion."
"Our team has also executed a total asset freeze on the DuPont Group's primary holding accounts."
"They thought they could keep me silent, Ryan," I said, my voice quiet but carrying the strength of a survivor who had finally found her voice. "They believed that because my father died suddenly, I would just let them dismantle his logistics firm without ever looking at the books."
"They forgot that I spent five years working as a senior forensic auditor before I ever met Julian."
"The files we recovered from Julian's private safe are staggering, Sophia," Ryan said, opening his digital tablet and sliding the transaction logs across my lap. "It wasn't just simple greed. The DuPonts have been siphoning millions of dollars from your father's estate trust to fund an illegal real estate development network in Panama."
"They were planning to use the upcoming board merger next week to transfer the remaining land deeds to Valerie’s shell company. Once the transfer was finalized, they were going to file an emergency psychiatric petition to have you committed to a private facility, ensuring you could never contest the signatures."
The sheer, monstrous scale of their betrayal made my chest tighten, but the fear was gone. It had been entirely replaced by a cold, mathematical determination to see them ruined.
"They won't get the board meeting, Ryan," I said, standing up from the table and sliding my clean jacket over my shoulders. "The prenuptial agreement Julian signed contains a strict corporate morality clause. Any act of physical violence or domestic duress immediately triggers a total, irreversible separation of our family's assets."
"I am going to take back every single share of my father's firm, and I am going to do it in front of their wealthiest investors."

"Victoria Vance has already contacted their defense attorneys, trying to claim the video was a deepfake," Ryan warned. "They’re going to try to paint you as an erratic, unstable woman who staged the assault to secure a larger divorce settlement."
"Let them try," I said, my lips curving into a cold, sharp smile. "The chemical analysis of the chocolate pie residue on my blouse has already verified the presence of Catherine's unique, imported hand cream. The physical evidence is absolute, and they are about to find out how small a federal courtroom can be."
