Chapter 2 - The Silent Audit

The archive was a sanctuary of dust and digital ghosts.

I sat at a terminal, the soft glow of the monitor illuminating the lines of data that spelled out the end of Carter’s world.

He believed he was the king of the sixty-second floor, but he was nothing without the foundation I had provided.

I started the transfer at 10:00 AM.

It wasn't a heist.

It was a systematic withdrawal of trust.

Every account he thought was his, every asset he had leveraged, every piece of intellectual property he had claimed was actually held in a holding company registered in my maiden name.

He had been so busy building his "empire" that he had neglected to read the fine print on the documents I had "handled for him" in the early years.

He had been the face, but I had been the bank.

A soft knock came at the archives door.

I didn't look up.

"Come in."

It was the Chief of Security, a man who had worked for the family since the beginning.

"Olivia," he said, his voice hesitant. "Carter is calling for an emergency meeting with the board. He wants you locked out."

"He can want all he likes," I said, not missing a beat as I dragged and dropped files. "He has no access, remember?"

"He’s furious. He’s trying to call the bank, but the accounts are unresponsive."

I smiled, a cold, sharp thing.

"Tell him the bank is busy."

I opened a file named 'The Mother's Orchid.'

It contained the recordings of every private conversation he had ever had in that office—conversations where he discussed how he would eventually dispose of me once the company was stable.

He had been planning this for two years.

I had been preparing for it for three.

I moved the files into a public server, setting them on a timer.

"What are you doing?" the Chief of Security asked, stepping closer to look at the screen.

"I'm giving him exactly what he asked for," I said. "Visibility."

"If you do this, you’ll burn the company to the ground."

"The company belongs to me, not him," I said. "If I have to burn it to stop him from using it as a weapon against me, then so be it."

The security guard stood back, his eyes wide as he realized the woman he had known for years was not the woman standing in front of him.

"You're not doing this for spite," he whispered.

"No," I replied. "I'm doing this for justice."

I hit 'execute.'

The countdown started.

Twenty-four hours until the Hayes Empire became a cautionary tale.

I stood up, smoothed my skirt, and walked toward the exit.

My work here was done.

Now, it was time to watch the fireworks.
