Chapter 3 - The Gala of Consequences

The charity gala was the peak of the autumn season.

Hundreds of elite guests packed the grand ballroom, the air filled with the scent of expensive perfume and the hum of polite, shallow conversation.

Carter Hayes stood at the center, his charm turned up to its maximum, oblivious to the fact that his world was about to collapse.

Khloe was at his side, her white dress looking like a beacon of the future he had chosen.

I walked in at 8:00 PM.

I didn't wear white.

I wore a dress of deep, midnight blue, the color of a bruised sky.

Every head in the room turned.

Some looked in pity, others in curiosity.

I walked straight to the bar, ordered a glass of water, and stood by the wall, watching.

At 8:15 PM, the CEO of the world’s largest bank arrived, his expression grim.

He walked straight toward Carter.

"Mr. Hayes, we have an issue," he said, loud enough for the people nearby to hear.

Carter laughed, his glass held high.

"Whatever it is, we can discuss it on Monday."

"I don't think you understand, sir," the banker said, his voice cold. "Your assets have been liquidated. You are currently in default on every major loan held by this institution."

The laughter in the ballroom died instantly.

"Default?" Carter sneered. "My firm is worth hundreds of millions!"

"Your firm was worth that yesterday," a voice said from the stage.

It was me.

I had walked up the steps, the microphone feeling surprisingly light in my hand.

I looked at the crowd, then at Carter.

His face had gone pale, his mouth slightly agape.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "I’m Olivia Hayes, and I’m here to tell you that the man standing in the center of the room has been living a lie."

I tapped the screen behind me.

The files started playing.

Not just the fraud, not just the stolen assets, but the recordings.

The room erupted.

Carter looked like he was about to collapse.

He tried to step toward me, but the security guards I had hired earlier intercepted him.

"This is a mistake!" he screamed, his voice cracking. "She’s crazy! She’s trying to destroy me!"

"I’m not destroying you, Carter," I said, stepping off the stage. "I’m just peeling back the wallpaper."

I walked past him, past Khloe, who looked like she was about to faint, and walked toward the door.

The night was cool, the city lights shimmering in the distance.

I felt lighter than air.

I had won.

But as I reached my car, I saw a figure standing in the shadows.

It was his mother.

She wasn't looking at me with anger.

She was looking at me with a strange, haunting sadness.

"You knew," she whispered. "You knew what he was the whole time."

I didn't answer.

I just got in the car.

Some people only learn the value of loyalty after they replace it with something beautiful and cheap.

And Carter Hayes had just learned it the hardest way possible.
