Chapter 3 - The Accountant’s Revenge

The following week was a period of calculated silence.

While the media circus continued outside the gates, Evelyn spent her time in the study, her laptop open to the financial records she had been analyzing for the Mercer Foundation.

Damian watched her from the doorway, amazed by her resilience.

She wasn't mourning the hair, or the humiliation; she was dismantling Serena’s family, one ledger entry at a time.

"They think Serena is the only problem," Evelyn said without looking up, her fingers flying across the keys.

"But she wasn't acting alone."

"Her family has been using the Mercer Foundation as a funnel for offshore real estate fraud for years."

Damian felt a surge of cold, sharp respect for his mother.

"How long have you known?"

"Since before the wedding," she replied, her eyes narrowing as she highlighted a series of irregular transfers.

"I just needed the right moment to expose them."

She turned to face him, her hacked hair pinned back, her expression one of steely, forensic calm.

"Serena thought she was humiliating me because I was weak."

"She had no idea she was attacking a forensic accountant with the keys to her family's destruction."

Damian felt a laugh rise in his throat—a laugh that had nothing to do with humor and everything to do with recognition.

They were both Kingsley, through and through.

"How do we move?"

"We don't," she said, tapping a single key on her laptop.

"We just watch."

She had already uploaded the evidence to the federal authorities and the major news outlets, ensuring that the Mercer name would be synonymous with scandal for decades.

Serena was already facing criminal charges, but this would ensure her entire family was bankrupt, disgraced, and imprisoned.

As the information began to ripple through the financial sector, Damian saw the headlines change.

The focus shifted from the "wedding day scandal" to the "Mercer Foundation collapse."

He realized then that Evelyn had been fighting a much larger battle than anyone had imagined.

She had protected the family not with weapons, but with the cold, unyielding truth.
