Chapter 2 - The Aftermath of Fury

The police arrived seconds later, their sirens wailing like mourning spirits in the quiet dawn.
They found Trent, Richard, and Helen huddled in the corner of the kitchen, their eyes wide with the realization that their small, cruel world had been pulverized.
Alex held me the entire time, his gaze never leaving the men who had hurt his sister.
He didn't shout.
He didn't engage in their pathetic attempts at negotiation.
He was the definition of cold, calculated justice.
Paramedics swarmed the room, their voices muted in the chaos.
They checked my vitals, their expressions growing serious as they saw the extent of my bruising and the severity of the trauma.
I watched as Trent was dragged away in handcuffs, his face a mask of disbelief and sputtering rage.
He still didn't understand.
He still thought he was the victim of a misunderstanding, a man wronged by his wife’s "hysteria."
"Don't let him go," I whispered, clutching Alex’s hand as they prepared the gurney.
"He tried to kill the baby."
Alex tightened his grip, his jaw working in silent, dangerous rage.
"He’s never going to see the sun again, Clara," he vowed, his voice a promise written in stone.
"The lawyers I've retained are going to make sure of that."
We left the house, the smell of grease and blood fading into the fresh, crisp air of the morning.
As we reached the ambulance, Helen tried to lunge at me, but an officer pinned her to the ground with ease.
Her face was twisted with pure, unadulterated hate.
"You'll pay for this!" she shrieked, her voice echoing down the suburban street.
"They'll see you for the manipulative brat you are!"
I looked at her, then at the ambulance, and felt a wave of profound relief wash over me.
The nightmare was behind us.
May you like
The house was empty.
My life was finally, truly mine, and the dawn felt like a new beginning rather than just another day of suffering.
