Chapter 3 - The Recovery

The days in the hospital were filled with the soft, persistent beeping of monitors and the smell of antiseptic.

I was safe.

The baby was safe.

My world had been reduced to the essentials of survival and recovery, a stark contrast to the life of constant fear I had lived.

Every night, Alex sat in the chair next to my bed, his presence a constant, quiet assurance that the past was dead.

He had become my guardian, my protector, the shield I hadn't known I had when I was suffering in silence.

I spent hours staring out the window, watching the city wake up, wondering how I had allowed myself to live in such a distorted reality for so long.

I had been so isolated, so convinced that there was no way out, that I had nearly lost everything I held dear.

But the light had returned, and with it, a burning desire to see them pay for every tear they had caused.

The lawyers visited me, taking my statement, recording the months of abuse that Trent and his family had inflicted upon me with such cold indifference.

They were relentless.

They didn't just want Trent in prison; they wanted to dismantle the entire foundation of their lives, piece by piece.

They wanted to prove that what had happened to me wasn't just a domestic dispute—it was a pattern of systematic, sadistic control that demanded the highest price.

"They have nothing," my lead attorney said one afternoon, flipping through a folder of financial documents.

"Their reputation is gone, their assets are tied up in litigation, and the district attorney is filing for attempted murder."

I nodded, the news confirming what I already knew: their arrogance had led them straight to this moment.

They were going to be the ones in the dark now, trapped by the laws they thought they could bypass.

I started to feel strong again, the fog in my mind lifting to reveal a clear path forward.

I wasn't just a survivor of the bludgeoning; I was the one who had finally walked away from the wreckage to claim a better life.
