Chapter 2 - The Exile of the Ego

The process of clearing the condo was swift and ruthless.

The men didn't just take the furniture; they took everything that Ricardo valued.

They hauled out the expensive sound system, the designer rugs, and even the wall art he had bragged about for months.

Teresa stood on the side, her face drained of color as she watched her son’s artificial lifestyle being carried out in boxes.

“You can’t do this!” she screamed at me.

“We’re family!”

I looked at her, my lip still stinging from the blow I had received earlier.

“You aren't family,” I said.

“You’re an audience.”

“And the show is over.”

Ricardo tried to find some dignity in the rubble, but he had nothing left.

He was a man who had staked his entire existence on a facade, and now that it was gone, there was no man left at all.

Salas walked up to him once the room was mostly empty.

“You have until sunrise to vacate the rest of the unit,” Salas said.

“And if I see you in this city again, the debt will be collected in ways you won’t survive.”

Ricardo nodded, his voice lost somewhere in the back of his throat.

As Salas and his men exited, they left behind a shell of a home, but it was a shell that was finally mine.

The quiet that followed was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.

The kids were gone, the drunken relatives were scattering into the night, and the remnants of my marriage were piled up on the sidewalk below.

Ricardo looked at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of rage and pathetic desperation.

“You did this on purpose,” he whispered.

“You destroyed me.”

“You destroyed yourself, Ricardo,” I replied.

“I just stopped paying for the privilege of watching you do it.”

He walked toward the door, his steps heavy and broken, leaving me alone in the space where I had spent years being the woman he demanded I be.

I closed the door, the lock clicking into place with a definitive, satisfying sound.

I was finally, truly, alone.

And it was the best feeling in the world.
