Chapter 6 - The Fallout at the Altar

The next morning, the headlines across Chicago did not report a grand society wedding.
Instead, the front pages were dominated by the shocking arrest of Bianca Sterling for corporate espionage and manslaughter.
Alongside that was the quiet retirement of Eleanor Vale from the high-stakes world of Chicago shipping.
Inside the Vale mansion, the atmosphere had completely transformed.
The heavy, dark drapes had been pulled back.
Bright morning sun flooded the marble floors for the first time in three years.
Dominic sat at the large dining table.
A cup of coffee sat completely untouched in front of him.
He looked exhausted.
The weight of a three-year lie was finally lifted from his shoulders, but the guilt remained heavy in his chest.
Evelyn walked down the stairs.
She was no longer wearing the oversized maid uniform.
She was dressed in her own simple clothes, holding a small suitcase.
Noah was holding onto her hand.
His little face was anxious, terrified that his nightmare was about to start all over again.
“Evelyn,” Dominic stood up quickly.
He stepped out of the dining room to meet her at the base of the stairs.
“Where are you going?”
“My job here is done, Dominic,” Evelyn said softly.
Her eyes lingered on Noah with deep sorrow.
“I brought the evidence.”
“I saved Noah from the boarding school.”
“You know the truth now.”
“I have no place in this mansion.”
“No!” Noah cried out.
He buried his face in Evelyn’s side.
“Mommy, don't go!”
“You promised!”
Dominic looked at his son.
The boy had smiled and spoken more in the last twelve hours than he had in the last three years.
He walked over, dropping to his knees so he was at eye level with both of them.
“Evelyn,” Dominic said.
His voice cracked with an emotion he had hidden from the world for too long.
“I laughed at you last night.”
“I insulted you.”
“I was blind to the vipers in my own home, and I almost let them destroy my son.”
“You risked your life to come back here for him.”
“I didn't do it for you, Dominic,” Evelyn said honestly.
“I did it because Marissa was my best friend, and because Noah is the only child I will ever love.”
“Then don't leave him,” Dominic pleaded.
He reached out to gently touch the blue yarn bracelet Evelyn still held.
“Don't leave us.”

“I can't undo the last three years, but I can spend the rest of my life making sure this house is a real home for my son.”
“And a home for the woman who saved him.”
