Chapter 7 - A True Family Restored

One year later, the sound of laughter echoed across the sprawling lawn of the Vale estate.

The dark, fearful atmosphere of the old mob empire had vanished completely.

It was replaced by a legitimate, transparent shipping enterprise that no longer operated in the shadows.

Dominic Vale had completely restructured the business.

He severed all ties to the underworld to ensure his family could walk the streets of Chicago without fear.

A small backyard birthday party was in full swing.

Noah, now seven years old, was running through the grass with a group of school friends.

His laughter was bright and unrestrained.

He was no longer the “fragile” boy hidden upstairs away from the world.

He was thriving, confident, and constantly smiling.

Dominic stood on the back patio.

A gentle smile rested on his face as he watched his son.

He felt a soft hand slip into his.

He turned to look at Evelyn.

Her eyes were bright, her face relaxed and beautiful in the afternoon sun.

She was wearing a simple, elegant sundress.

On her wrist, alongside a new gold band, was the faded blue yarn bracelet Noah had made for her years ago.

“He’s happy, Dominic,” Evelyn whispered.

She leaned her head against his shoulder.

“We’re all happy, Evie,” Dominic said.

He turned to wrap his arms around her waist, pulling her close.

“Because you had the courage to look me in the eye when I was at my worst.”

Noah ran up the patio steps, out of breath.

He threw his arms around both of their legs.

“Mommy! Daddy! Come play!”

Dominic laughed.

It was a warm, genuine sound that carried across the water.

This sound completely erased the echo of the cold, cruel laugh that had filled the dining room a year before.

He picked Noah up, holding him high against the sky.

Evelyn walked beside them into the bright, open green lawn.

The shadows were gone.

The truth had set them free.

They were finally a real family.
