Plot twist

Chapter 1 - The Shattered Facade

The marble foyer, once a symbol of my hard-won success, now felt like a cold, hollow chamber of horrors.

Evelyn, my mother, was shivering on the floor, her hands trembling as she tried to gather the broken shards of the orchid pot.

The bruise on her wrist pulsed a dark, sickening shade of violet against her frail skin.

Vanessa stood just feet away, her white silk dress pristine and untouched, her expression shifting rapidly from cruelty to forced sweetness as she realized I was watching.

I stood paralyzed, the diamond bracelet box in my hand feeling like a lead weight.

“Derek? Baby, you’re home early,” she chirped, her voice hitting a register that felt like nails on a chalkboard.

I didn't answer her; I couldn't.

My eyes were locked on my mother’s broken walking cane, lying discarded near the base of the stairs like a symbol of her discarded dignity.

“Clara tried to warn me,” my mother whispered, her voice barely audible above the drumming of the rain outside.

“But before she left… she hid something in this house.”

The name Clara hit me like a physical blow to the stomach.

I had spent months accusing Clara of being boring, cold, and controlling, all while she had been the only one holding this family together.

I looked at Vanessa, who was now inching toward the staircase, her eyes wide with a desperate, frantic energy.

“She’s confused, Derek!” Vanessa insisted, laughing a sharp, jagged sound.

“Old people exaggerate everything to get attention.”

But I saw the safe hidden behind the painting in the study, and for the first time, I wondered what she had been locking away from my mother.

The realization that Clara had been protecting me—not from herself, but from this—began to settle in my mind.

I took a step forward, my boots clicking sharply against the marble.

“What did you hide, Vanessa?” I asked, my voice dangerously quiet.

“And why were you so afraid that my mother would find it?”

She didn't answer, but her frantic gaze toward the staircase told me everything I needed to know.

Clara hadn't just walked away; she had left behind a detonator, and I was about to trigger it.
