Chapter 2 - The Hidden Truth

I pushed past Vanessa, ignoring her shrieks as she tried to claw at my suit jacket.

The staircase felt like it stretched on forever, each step a testament to the years I had wasted on a lie.

I reached the study, my heart hammering against my ribs, and went straight to the painting that covered the wall safe.

I had never opened it—Clara had always handled the finances, a task I had deemed "her duty" while I focused on my career.

I punched in the combination I had seen Clara use a thousand times: our wedding anniversary.

It opened with a smooth, silent click.

Inside, there was no money, no jewelry, and no secrets of my own making.

There was only a thick, manila envelope and a small, digital recorder.

I opened the envelope first, my fingers trembling as I pulled out a stack of documents.

They were not just bank records; they were a detailed log of every cent Vanessa had siphoned from my mother’s health account.

She hadn't just been mistreating my mother; she had been systematically stealing the money I had set aside for Evelyn’s post-operative care.

I felt a surge of cold, white-hot fury that dwarfed any anger I had ever felt before.

Then, I pressed play on the digital recorder.

Clara’s voice, calm and steady, filled the silent room.

“If you are hearing this, Derek, it means you finally opened the safe.”

“I’m sorry I couldn't stay to tell you this in person, but I needed to protect your mother when you refused to see the truth.”

“Vanessa isn't just cruel—she's a professional predator who has been destroying this family from the inside out.”

“I’ve left the evidence with a private investigator who will contact you as soon as this file is accessed.”

I sat back, the recorder still playing, my mind racing as I listened to her outline Vanessa’s entire, calculated plan.

Clara had spent her last months in our house gathering evidence, protecting my mother, and preparing for her departure, all while I was busy planning a life with the woman who was trying to kill me.

The door creaked open, and Vanessa stood there, her face devoid of its usual, practiced charm.

“You don't understand,” she said, her voice dropping to a low, menacing hiss.

“You’re nobody without me.”

I looked at her, and for the first time, I didn't see the woman who made me feel 'alive.'

I saw exactly what I had brought into my mother’s home.
